“A Natural Disaster”

Filed in National by on December 9, 2008

Just when you had gotten over your addiction to daily tracking polls, CNN goes and releases a new poll which finds that 79% of Americans approve of Obama’s handling of the transition.    According to the media narrative, the remaining 21% are all liberals.   But of course that is not true.    While some purist liberals who can never be happy with anything in life are complaining about Obama keeping Gates and appointing Clinton and Jones, or whatever is angering them this week, the fact is their numbers are incredibly small even if they are loud.    Purists will always be loud.  That is what makes them so annoying.  But I digress.

An interesting state in this poll is that approximately 10% of those polled do not view Obama favorably and approve of Bush, yet also approve of Obama’s efforts during the transition.  This must be the pragmatic racist vote, like the ones in northeastern Pennsylvania who said when canvassed “We’re voting for the n*****.”

CNN’s Bill Schneider puts these numbers in perspective:

An Obama job approval rating of 79 percent — that’s the sort of rating you see when the public rallies around a leader after a national disaster,” said Bill Schneider, CNN’s senior political analyst. “To many Americans, the Bush administration was a national disaster.”

Other numbers that might make you smile and make Burris tear some hair out:

Six in 10 have a favorable view of the Democratic Party, while a majority have an unfavorable opinion of the Republican party.

I got a new hardware/software package two weeks ago, and of course it didn’t work ‘out-of-the-box’, so I called the techies, who were in India. While we were waiting on the third re-boot, the techie said, “So, are you happy about your Presidential election?” I said I was. He said, in not so many words, “We were sort of wondering what the fuck you guys were thinking the last eight years.”

Nice to know we’ve finally done something besides piss off the entire world.

  2. anon says:

    From the article:
“Obama’s approval rating is 14 points higher than the approval rating for President-elect George Bush in 2001 and 17 points higher than President-elect Clinton’s rating in 1992”

Well of course – a majority actually VOTED for Obama. Clinton won the vote by a plurality, and Bush actually lost the vote.

  3. wait a freaking second!

anon? you read the article? wtf? none of our readers take the time to do that?

  4. jason330 says:

According to the media narrative, the remaining 21% are all liberals.

    I just pissed my pants.

  5. Sharon says:

Bookmark this and let’s talk about Obama’s approval ratings once he’s expected to do something besides read the teleprompter.

Nice to know we’ve finally done something besides piss off the entire world.

Yes, because I know my main concern during the election was whether or not a guy in India liked my president.

  6. jason330 says:

    Sharon,

I have an idea. Why don’t you write a list of all the things you like about Bush and shove it up your ass?

    ‘kay?

  7. Disbelief says:

Sharon, a good act that produces a good result carries with it some justification in an of itself.

You sound like a character out of a Dickens novel that demeans the unfortunate for being unfortunate.

    Happy Holidays.

PS: Is your last name “Palin”, or are you related to anyone of the same family?

  8. nemski says:

The Radical Right’s argument about Obama: He’s going to f*ck up at some point.

Yeah, he might mess up a few times, ’cause he’s trying to pull the nation out of the m*therf*cking ditch the Republicans drove it into.

  9. Sharon says:

I have an idea. Why don’t you write a list of all the things you like about Bush and shove it up your ass?

I have a better idea for you, jason. Why don’t you do to yourself the sorts of things you always suggest should happen to Republicans? Yes, yes, I know “shove it up your ass” is the best you can come up with when someone points out that Obama’s getting the love right now. But let’s wait to see what happens to his approval ratings once he has to do something.

    Disbelief,
Nah, I’m more like a character from a Janet Evanovich book. And seriously, you need to get over your Sarah Palin phobia.

    Merry Christmas!

  10. dumbest comment ever…

Yes, because I know my main concern during the election was whether or not a guy in India liked my president.

it should be important to you because the less people that hate us, the less terrorists you have wanting to kill us.

  11. Sharon says:

Yeah, he might mess up a few times, ’cause he’s trying to pull the nation out of the m*therf*cking ditch the Republicans drove it into.

Oh, I don’t worry that he’s gonna f*ck up at some point. I figure he’ll be doing it on a regular basis. But I’m optimistic. Maybe he won’t be a complete disaster. His picks so far aren’t too bad.

  12. Sharon says:

it should be important to you because the less people that hate us, the less terrorists you have wanting to kill us.

Wow, speaking of dumbest comment ever.

I will bet you a beer right now that in four years time, the world is gonna be hatin’ Obama for something or other that we’ve done. That’s the nature of being the superpower.

BTW, are you saying that 9/11 was because the world hated us for Bill Clinton? Just sayin’.

  13. Sharon says:

    is myopia contagious?

I thought you were the expert there.

  14. Disbelief says:

For those of you who travel to out of the way places, you may be familiar with a ‘trick’ used by many Americans overseas during the past eight years to have a better time: wear a T-shirt with a maple leaf logo. Now that we have a President who does not (or has not yet) torture people, I’m wondering if we can admit Americanism and simply wear a T-shirt that says “I never voted for Bush”?

  15. jason330 says:

    That video is fucking hilarious.

  16. Unstable Isotope says:

The Onion was very prescient. I still remember their article about the long national nightmare of peace and prosperity being over upon Bush’s inauguration.

  17. anonone says:

    Sharon,

Did you call in stupid for work today?

  18. I thought you were the expert there.

it’s hard to tell, I can’t see through your bullshit

  19. dis,

may want to hold off on that Canada T my friend. Shit is hitting the fan up there too

  20. Sharon says:

Did you call in stupid for work today?

Well, at least I have a job.

it’s hard to tell, I can’t see through your bullshit

Odd, yours is transparent. Try some fiber.

  21. and in closing, you proved nothing we already didn’t know. That being you are clueless.

Terrorists hate us but it’s not important to you to have a president less people hate. that in a nutshells says all you need to know about the scope of your knowledge.

  22. Wow, speaking of dumbest comment ever.

I will bet you a beer right now that in four years time, the world is gonna be hatin’ Obama for something or other that we’ve done.

right back at ya. Save your beer. I never said people wouldn’t hate him, there you go making your mental leaps that astound the intelligent. I said less.

It is important to me to have someone that more people respect. I know you can’t rationalize why that might be important in a global economy and age where there is state sponsored terrorism.

It’s ok, you are fun to expose as a fraud.

  23. Dana Garrett says:

‘While some purist liberals who can never be happy with anything in life are complaining about Obama keeping Gates and appointing Clinton and Jones, or whatever is angering them this week, the fact is their numbers are incredibly small even if they are loud. Purists will always be loud. ”

No one who called for mass murder of people who disagree w/his politics, even if he later repented of his comment, is any position to talk about others being loud.

Your problem Deldem is precisely that you put your finger in the wind and see which way the wind is blowing in the Dem Party and then decide what your position is. That’s why you are neither a liberal nor a progressive. You are a partisan hack. That’s a different creature. It’s also what make you look ridiculous when it makes you support someone like KWS simply because she is a Dem.

I hope that Obama’s numbers stay high and that he governs like a progressive, his cabinet appointments so far notwithstanding. Perhaps he will. But maybe the reason why you HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH AN APPOINTMENT LIKE GATES is because, in truth, you are a Red Dog Democrat. I am not the only person to wonder that about you. If so, it raises the question why you write for a blog named Delaware LIBERAL. I have never understood why you are here.

In any case, the next time you take a position on some issue nationally, I’ll know that it was probably fond in some poll somewhere or, if it’s a local issue, you got it from the Dem Party leadership in DE. I note that while others here have many critical things to say about Carper, you are virtually silent about him. If you are a conservative Dem, you should just admit it and be done w/ it. At least then you would have some integrity. Now you are just embarrassment to the honorific term Liberal. In any case, I’m tired of having to explain to people I talk to that you are not representative of most liberals. I had to do it again just last night.

  24. anon says:

Speaking of Canada – there are conservative shitbags there too.

The Conservative PM Stephen Harper, about to be canned by a no-confidence vote, went running to the Queen of England to shut down Parliament until January to prevent the vote from taking place.

That’s right, I said the Queen of England. That’s how it works up there.

Harper’s theory is that he can do something between now and January to save his sorry ass.

Last time we travelled to Europe I bought my kids solid colored tee shirts. Tony Hawke and Hannah Montana stayed at home. Oversees it’s easy to spot Americans. We have a penchant for slogan/decorated tees… “This Bud’s for you,” “Just Do It,” etc.

  26. Disbelief says:

I have a friend who was a Mountie and assigned to the Queen when she visited. Her job was carrying a pouch and following the Queen around. She said she managed to keep secret what was in the pouch for years, then one of the cops figured it out: it was a personal toilet seat in case the Queen had to use a public ‘loo. The Mountie had a little adjustable wrench so, if given the high sign, she would replace the public toilet seat with the Queen’s Own.

  27. delawaredem says:

No one who called for mass murder of people who disagree w/his politics, even if he later repented of his comment, is any position to talk about others being loud.

Tough shit Mr. Purist Gasbag With Very Large Glasses. Your attempt to silence me will only make me louder.

My role in life is simply to make Dana Garrett feel superior to something or someone. I supported KWS because I was impressed with her during our interview. And yes, I disqualified Brady because he was a Republican. I am sorry that angers you, but I have principles whereas you do not.

If so, it raises the question why you write for a blog named Delaware LIBERAL. I have never understood why you are here.

Dana, you are such a fucking idiot. Because I am a liberal. The only difference between you and me is that I am not a loudmouth purist child that insists on getting everything he wants when he wants it. I am more practical and pragmatic.

  28. Dana Garrett says:

“Tough shit Mr. Purist Gasbag With Very Large Glasses”

    You’re a name-calling child.

“My role in life is simply to make Dana Garrett feel superior to something or someone.”

If that’s your job, then I fire you because you only make me sick and embarrassed. I just now got off the phone w/ yet another person complaining about you because of this post and the one attacking me above. They said your partisanship has elements of fascism. That’s what people think of you. STOP slinging mud on the term Liberal.

    You’re fired.

  29. delawaredem says:

You call me a fascist and say I am a name calling child. Nice.

Partisanship is fascist? Dana, how are you ever going to get your liberal goals accomplished without being partisan? You think Conservatives are just going to lay down. God, you purists are so naive it is disgusting.

  30. Sharon says:

right back at ya. Save your beer. I never said people wouldn’t hate him, there you go making your mental leaps that astound the intelligent. I said less.

What is astounding is that you can say “it should be important to you because the less people that hate us” then say that you never said people wouldn’t hate him. I suppose this is more of the whole “his good intentions” outweigh whatever the results may be. But that’s just a liberal bullshit blanket to cover all sins. My point is that those in the world who want to hate us will do so regardless. They hated Clinton (and attacked us). They hated both Bushes (and and attacked us). They hated Reagan (and attacked us).

It’s ok, you are fun to expose as a fraud.

Where did you do that, exactly?

  31. xstryker says:

My point is that those in the world who want to hate us will do so regardless.

Really? Tell me, you don’t think our replacing Iran’s democratically elected leader with a monarchist dictator (the Shah) might be a factor? Or the way we prop up the dictatorial Saudi monarchy? Or our support for Hosni Mubarak and his 5 terms in office?

If you really want to be embarassed, try reading about our actions in Latin America over the past century or so.

  32. nemski says:

X there you go again, using “logic”.

  33. pandora says:

But… but they hate us for our freedom – which, to some people, is something to be proud. Now that’s really scary!

  34. Dana Garrett says:

“Partisanship is fascist? Dana, how are you ever going to get your liberal goals accomplished without being partisan?”

I am partisan, but it comes after my principles like what’s the public good. When the public good is at stake, then I’m not partisan. I voted straight Dem except for Brady. I didn’t think it was in the public good to vote for KWS when she seemed like a fish out of water and there were even questions about whether she can serve. The public good was at stake.

I don’t think that ther public good is at stake in most candidate choices. When that happens I vote like a partisan and support partisan candidates.

Now tell me what is wrong w/ that position and how isn’t it a RESPONSIBLE partisan position.
