DEGOP goes full on Malcolm X to support road builders and state workers
Apparently the DEGOP knows something about state workers that the DelDems don’t. It knows….they vote. It also knows that the people who build roads vote. So while the proposed “by any means necessary” across the board 5% cut in all departments foreshadows job cuts, the state workers remaining standing after the cuts would be economically (although probably not psychologically) better off. That seems to be plan anyway.
DOVER – Answering the governor’s call for ideas, Delaware State Senate Republicans today submitted a plan that would promote responsible government spending, kick-start funding for transportation projects and provide raises to state employees.
The proposal, outlined in a letter sent this morning to Gov. Jack Markell, features three main components – or “three R’s” as they’re calling it: Roads, raises and responsibility.
The initiative would direct the heads of each state agency to reduce spending in their departments by 5 percent, “through legislation, executive order, or any other means necessary.” The decreased spending would free up $195 million for the state spending plan budget writers are putting together for next year.
“Throughout this legislative session, the governor has urged state lawmakers to come to him with ideas on how to address this year’s significant budget challenges and how to pay for improvements to Delaware’s roads,” said Senate Republican Leader Gary Simpson (R-Milford). “Well, this is our idea, and we look forward to getting to work immediately with the governor to iron out the details. We can’t keep going back to Delaware families and businesses to fix our problems. We’re committed to responsible government spending and we’re confident the governor feels the same way.”
…and in Sunday’s NJ, our elected officials go back to their proposal of raising gas taxes, AGAIN. They keep “borrowing” from the transportation trust fund, they have to be more creative. I know what your going to say, but come up with a better way to be GREEN. So here’s the deal; do to the Affordable Care Act, the State is paying for higher insurance rates, they need money for schools, roads, etc. Well guess who just received a HUGE chunk of money & we’re funding them………BLOOM ENERGY!! Yep and who do we have to thank for that??
The 5% thing suggests that we are currently over investing in the services that make Delaware a decent place to locate a business or raise a family. Is there waste? Sure, just look at how many state employees make over $170 k per year. Does a blanket 5% cut get to that waste? Hell no.
Making statements such as “Cut EVERYTHING 5%!” is intellectually lazy. Comparing it to household expenses is ridiculous; it pretends that everyone cut their household expenses by 5% across the board – that they didn’t make cost decisions, that they cut their mortgage payment by 5%. The households the GOP touts put more thought into their cuts (and priorities) than the GOP is willing to do.
To be fair, Bloom Energy is currently posting about a dozen solid-looking jobs online at all levels, and including a posting for a Senior HR Manager which implies HR will be expanding to hire more.
@Puck a dozen?? They’ve already missed their benchmarks, twice! But, the State gave them until 2017, that is when penalties will kick in. That’s a joke. What people fail to see is that there is no ROI, NONE. I guess it’s a mute point. But, I’d rather see my $5.65 a month go into; education, roads, services to the poor!!
Their idea of an idea gives you a good idea about the depth of their ideas.
@Geezer so what is the alternative that the Democrats in the state are putting forward? I ask, as a Democrat.
Thge democrats need to lose their hubris and come up with something. If the republicans figure out how to nominate someone who isn’t obsessed with religious and sexual issues, a lot of state employeees who are sick of the current group may look at the other side.
