Delawareans Hate Hawaiian Pizza
I’ve never felt more Delawarean than I did when I read the our most hated food is Hawaiian Pizza.
Contrary to what you might think, not everyone in the U.S. loves chicken nuggets.
Or so says the dating app Hater, which matches users based on the things they hate. Users can swipe to show approval or dislike for a person, activity, item or concept, including food. Since February, more than 600,000 users have swiped on the app’s 3,000 topics over 100 million times, a spokesman told HuffPost.
Hater researchers recently turned the app’s food-related data into one big map of the food, drink or food concept people hate most in each state, as compared to the rest of Hater’s worldwide user base. People in Mississippi, for example, swipe “hate” on sour cream more often than any other daters on Earth.
I lived in Oregon from 1973 to 1983. Oregonians love Hawaiian Pizza. From the New York metro area, I loved NY pizza, especially what they now call “thin crust”. I think back then, thin crust was standard crust. The sauce had a certain tang that is difficult to imitate, the cheeze adding to the tang slightly. That became the standard for pizza for me. Delaware’s pizza has gotten better since 1983, when it frankly stank. I never got used to pizza in Oregon. It never hit the spot. Too much pineapple and Canadian bacon. Did I say too much pineapple? You say this factoid was developed by some Hater dating site? Hmmm.
Death to pineapple on pizza, Canadian “bacon” if you must. Having grown up on Long Island, but living in Delaware for 43 years, I can say without reserve that the pizza still sucks. If it did not Domino’s and all the rest would have barely a foothold in the state. For some reason every pizzeria in the vast NYC area can pull it off, cheese pizza so good you really don’t need to add anything to it. Hell, if I could avoid my relatives I’d go back there just for a slice or two.

This entire thread is moot. Hawaiian “pizza” isn’t pizza. And while I’m at it that garbage they call pizza in Chicago is shocking.
East coast rules.
Hawaiian pizza is nowhere near as bad as people like to claim it is. It wouldn’t be my first choice, or 20th, but if it’s Hawaiian vs. Grotto’s, gimme the Hawaiian every time.
If you’re fishin’ for a defense of Grotto’s I got nothin’ for ya. 🙂
Oh, goodness no. Just underscoring that when it comes to pizza, I’m not listening to people from Delaware. I could excuse it when it was only at the beach, which is loaded with Virginians and Pittsburghers who don’t know any better.
In my experience, which is now somewhat dated, the only close approximation of decent NY thin crust pizza in Delaware is made at Margherita’s on Main Street in Newark.
Many, many visits to Margherita’s on Main street and it is top quality but try the Wood Fired Pizza at 140 E. Cleveland Ave. As a Philly transplant and pizza/hoagie aficionado (or glutton) it is impressively delicious with an excellent crust.

Considering what Delaware considers ‘pizza’ I will take this with a grain of salt.
I am surprised Delaware hasn’t put Scrapple on pizza.

It seems Delawareans live with in a reasonable proximity to great pizza, but are not surrounded by it like New Yorkers.
Therefor it makes sense that we’d take Hawaiian Pizza as a particularly egregious affront to decenty and common sense.
An aside – 21 years ago when M was pregnant with our first, her cravings were for Margarita’s pizza. The boy’s resulting ruddy good health and sunny nature is no doubt, in part, a result of those many slices.
I also am sometimes in the mood for Grottos, just don’t confuse their mainstay product as pizza ya know they use a cheddar cheese blend, right?. And they have by far the best stromboli I have ever had anywhere. It’s what I shoot for when I make them at home and what I judge all others by.
More for me. I know for a fact that Delawareans like it. It is one of the first to go at my parities and at work. I also know from 25 years ago when I was a part time driver for Pizza Hut.
