A VERY SPECIAL EDITION Of Delaware Political Weekly: May 20-26, 2022

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on May 26, 2022

So special we’re putting it up on Thursday.  One of our own readers broke the embargo.  So, we’ve been granted permission to break the following news:

1.  LYDIA YORK TO PRIMARY PARK CITY KATHY FOR STATE AUDITOR!!  She filed her committee yesterday.  She is quite the accomplished person:

Lydia York, Esq.

She started her career in public accounting with Coopers & Lybrand, a predecessor of PriceWaterhouseCoopers and becoming a Certified Public Accountant. She attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania earning an MBA with a concentration in Finance. She spent ten years working on complex financial products at Mellon Bank, N.A., Westinghouse Credit Corporation and Duquesne Light Company. Before switching to the legal profession, she helped a start-up internet company raise over $1 million. After graduating from Temple University Beasley School of Law, she clerked for the Honorable Phillip Lewis Paley, J.S.C. in the Middlesex Vicinage of New Jersey. At the conclusion of her clerkship, she completed an LL.M. in Taxation.

Lydia is admitted in Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Estates and Trusts Section, the Elder Law Section and the Tourism and Hospitality Section and the Multicultural Judges and Lawyer Section of the Delaware State Bar Association. She worked at Ciro Poppiti Law, Stewarts Law US, and at Mattleman Weinroth and Miller in estate planning before starting her solo practice in 2018.

Practice areas include estate planning, Medicaid planning, future care planning, probate, trust administration, adult guardianship and special needs planning.

Most importantly, she appears to be an ethical person.  Not to mention, a CPA and an attorney.  It doesn’t matter whether or not Kathy McGuiness is found criminally-culpable.  Her ethics are not in question–she has none. Plus, York’s combination of skills suggests that she can understand and navigate even the most convoluted messes a state auditor might uncover.

I congratulate both her and any and all Party officials who might have aided in her candidacy.  As soon as her website is up, I’m sure I won’t be the only person contributing to her campaign.

2.  The Kop Kabal Battles Its Prospective Extinction, And–Members Of Its Own Caucus.  Oh, sure, they might be able to claim plausible deniability.  But the candidacies of ex-cop Michael Hertzfeld against incumbent Eric Morrison, and ex-cop David Thomas against Rae Moore would not be possible w/o the approval of Speaker Pete and the Kop Kabal.  Oh, and the cops themselves.  They understand that the reign of the House leadership could well be over if they don’t get reinforcements.  Legislators look askance at leaders supporting primaries against incumbents. Oh, I might add the suspicious candidacy of LaVaughn McCutchen, who is in the 32nd RD race only to siphon votes away from Kerri Evelyn Harris so that the Chamber guy can win.  Folks, this battle is real. Get involved.

3. A Worthy Successor To Rep. Kowalko.  Cyndie Romer officially filed her candidacy this week.  People who I trust have assured me that she’s the real deal.  Here’s her platform.

What’d I miss, and whaddayathink?

  3. Stewball says:

Great news about Lydia York. And BHL said today she supports legalizing recreational marijuana, so we only have to wait till January 2025. Would prefer it be sooner of course.

    • Arthur says:

It doesnt matter what bhl supports, what does matt meyer support?

      • Da truth says:

Matt Meyer barely beat Maggie jones in his primary. BHL will easily beat him and his bunch of corrupt developer friends can go into hiding after.

        • Please. He got over 56% of the vote against the anointed candidate of the cops and the construction trades. ‘Barely beat her’.

If you’re gonna troll, at least do it effectively. The cops and the construction trades have been enemies to progress, not only in the Democratic Party, but in the state in general. They’ve been especially hostile to racial justice.

Their influence is waning. If electing Matt governor makes their influence wane even more, I’m all for it.

          • Datruth says:

If you think 56 percent against a Republican running as a democrat with no name recognition or money is a good thing. God bless. Matt has alienated a wide base of people and his stupid social media videos aren’t going to hide it. Trust fund baby will need to pour more then the 100k he spent of his own money to buy the Executive seat

          • puck says:

“Matt has alienated a wide base of people”

… funny, I only hear that asserted by an exceedingly SMALL base of people.

The police union has a series of petulant beefs with Meyer based on the fact that he is not part of the cop cabal.

          • Datruth says:

You can call me what you want but I think Meyer has been very unethical in office. Outside the police scandal there were numerous shady land use deals that favor developers over community interests as well.

BHL is most ready to be governor because she has extensive Dover connections, been in touch with various state agency’s for the last 20 years, gets briefed all the time on the state of the Delaware Guard, has a good grasp on the statewide emergency management system and honestly outside being Governor has no other ambitions.

Matt is always the guy looking for the next thing. He’s the type of guy who shakes your hand looking at the next guy. He’s a politician to me. Is Bethany a little flaky at times sure, but she’s sincere. At least she didn’t piss away cares funds like Matt has hiring unqualified people on the county for six future salaries.

          • Alby says:

“outside being Governor has no other ambitions.”

Outside of that, how’d you like the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

        • Alby says:

          Dana, is that you?

          • jason330 says:

The governors race is going to tell us a lot. I’m glad to see it is starting already.

          • Datruth says:

            Dana stole lawn signs

Matt Meyer protected sexual predators in the NCc police dept

Give me the sign stealing guy

          • Alby says:

It started long before Meyer, and to blame it on him smells like bullshit. That guy was at it for years.

You can have the sign stealing guy. I’d rather have someone the state cops don’t have by the short hairs from jump.

          • Datruth says:

If you think BHL is with the state cops wake up. She’s openly fighting them as they push candidates against Poore, Rae Moore, and others. She’s openly breaking with Carney on weed and the most ready to be the next governor.

Matt trust fund Meyer, who couldnt hack it as a lawyer, bounced around jobs like a 16 year old summer kid because no one liked him licked the NCC police boots and hid behind LEOBOR when they had him by the balls.

Matt is not a progressive, he’s a privliged kid who is more DC then Delaware.

            • So. We’ve established that you’re a pro-BHL troll. In a totally classless way. Which reminds me–no more personal attacks. This is your first–and LAST–warning.

BHL is ‘openly fighting’ against opponents for Poore and Moore? Well, she likely succeeded in getting a progressive D challenger to Poore to drop their candidacy. If you’ve ever read anything here, I don’t need to remind you how Poore parlayed her Senate position into an undeserved job as head of Jobs For Delaware Graduates. She is one of our most corrupt legislators. Oh, and she’s in an overwhelmingly D district. Show me where BHL expends some political capital instead of banking IOU’s, and maybe we’ll talk.

You could make the argument (I will) that Meyer is most ready to be the next governor. He’s managed a large governmental bureaucracy. And, unlike Carney, he’s demonstrated some vision as County Exec.

I’m not all in on Matt, and there are people who I respect who don’t support him. However, I was still working in Dover during BHL’s early legislative years, and I saw her as an aggressive self-promoter. Nothing has changed from what I’ve seen.

BTW, I know what ‘most ready to be governor’ means. It means ‘most likely to pursue Delaware Way Pro-chamber policies, and not to piss off the power-brokers’.

          • Alby says:

“Most ready to be the next governor” is the line I heard about Carney for years. Breaking with him over weed hardly sets her apart from other Democrats.

Openly fighting them? Did she put out a release?

You seem more than a little worked up about Meyer, though, which makes me take you with a ton or two of road salt.

    • mediawatch says:

On BHL: Not only is she splitting from Carney on this key issue, she’s avoiding a repeat of Carney’s costly inertia in 2008. If you recall, by then everyone was tired of Ruth Ann, but Carney positioned himself as Minner Lite, making it easy for Markell to beat him in the primary.
Whatever else you might think of BHL, this is evidence that she possesses at least a half-dozen functioning brain cells.

      • Alby says:

And she still has her sign-stealing husband, right? Hard pass.

        • mediawatch says:

Better than Carney ain’t sayin’ much. She may need the thievin’ hubby during primary season. If she gets past the primary, he can be retired.

          • Arthur says:

Besides minner you have to go back to the mid 60s to find a slower-lower elected governor.

  4. A says:

My concern for KEH’s campaign is that I haven’t seen much of a social media presence for it. While her primary opponent is very active on socials. Even on Twitter it’s pretty quiet about her campaign.

  5. The MoMo says:

Heck yes! Lydia is also NCC Party Secretary and well-known amongst organizers and RD members. We love to see it.

    • Kat C. says:

She’s the NCC Dems treasurer, which some may see as splitting hairs, but working with her as the Vice Chair and now as the chair of said Dems, I can assure you these are hairs worth splitting. She has been a stellar treasurer but I haven’t been this excited for an auditor candidate, in, well… a very long time.

  6. Janice Tribue Burnette says:

I know you will do a superb job. Congratulations!
