Song of the Day 8/7: Nini Music, “LongMa”

I bet when Nancy Pelosi was digging to China as a little girl, she didn’t think she’d find Taiwanese folk metal when she got there.

I assume this showed up in my feed because I was reading stories about Taiwan; until a couple of days ago I never even considered that such a genre might exist. But it’s apparently a thing, an offshoot of a thriving heavy-metal scene on the island nation of 23 million.

Thanks a lot, Alby! Just when I thought that I had enough to listen to, you’ve presented me with another genre to investigate. After hearing this, I went directly to YouTube, where I discovered her rendition of “Paint It Black,”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rugRfbgCkl4 which is at the same time exhilarating and a bit creepy, then that led me to The Hu, a Mongolian folk metal band. That, in turn, led me to rediscover one of my favorite bands from the ’90s, Huun-Huur-Tu. I used to drive friends crazy, telling them, “you’ve got to hear this!”, to which the general response was “WTF!”

Anyway, now my Sunday evening is going to be spent on YouTube. I’ll never get back those remaining hours of my life, but what the hell!

p.s.: How about a song of the day from The Seekers? Judy Durham died yesterday. They were mainly a folk/pop band, but they were an Australian treasure, and Durham had one of the best voices ever in the genre.
