A Tale Of Two Campaigns: Becca Cotto’s And Deb Heffernan’s

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on August 11, 2022

This is a tale of two campaigns.  It is a tale of a grassroots campaign vs. the worst the Delaware way has to offer.  Today’s the perfect day to tell this tale because it illustrates the stark differences between the two campaigns.  The race is for the 6th Representative District Democratic nomination between incumbent Deb Heffernan and challenger Becca Cotto.

Cotto has run a grassroots campaign with volunteers and small donations as her linchpins.  She has raised more than enough money to be competitive although she’s never gonna out-raise Heffernan’s corporate war chest.  Cotto has pledged to never accept corporate PAC money, both in this race and in future races.

Both candidates have key events scheduled for today.  Here’s what Becca has on tap:

W-wait, does that photo make me look fat?  You can tell the truth. (No, no, you can’t tell the truth.  Photos always make me look 20 pounds heavier than my typical svelte self.)

And here’s what Deb counters with:

That’s right.  A big-ticket fundraiser tonight at the Hotel DuPont that features all the Delaware Way luminaries.  No doubt led by Bobby Byrd and his chemical polluters that serve as a major portion of his client base and her donor base.  You see, as chair of the House Natural Resources and Environmental Control Committee, Deb buried very important environmental legislation in her committee, including a bill that would set clean air standards for Delaware, and a bill that would provide environmental protections for under-served communities.  Like Edgemoor, which is in her district.  In fact, she sneaked money into the Bond Bill for a dredging project that could seriously compromise marine and human life in the Delaware River and nearby Edgemoor.  Mayor Mike’s appearance is also a dead giveaway–a giveaway from Buccini/Pollin and the Buccini family to Deb (check her campaign finance reports) in exchange for favorable considerations. She’s bought and paid for by the Delaware Way.

But, you know what? Pictures are more powerful than words.  Coming soon: Photographic proof that Deb is in thrall to the corporate polluters and the Kop Kabal.

Until then, this stark contrast should serve to demonstrate who the incumbent is really serving in Dover, and who the challenger will represent once she is elected.  Two completely different constituencies altogether.

    ElSom,
Accentuate the positive. The hair you’re displaying in the photo makes you look at least 20 years younger. (If weight is your concern, put yourself in the second row at the next photo shoot.)

That is a formidable list Byrd has collected on Deb’s behalf. It is a shame too because I do think Heffer’n started out with the best intentions but she has been completely corrupted.

Maybe. But the piece I’m preparing for next week (waiting for the 30-day reports) will demonstrate that Heffernan has consistently carried the (polluted) water of the chemical industry for years.

The shame is, that as a toxicologist, she was well aware of the harm that her embrace of her polluter contributors was causing, including to communities in her own district.

    Great post
