Classified, Schmashified

Filed in National by on August 14, 2022

He “called it” unclassified. And “calling it” is irrefutable when determining which pre-teen gets to ride in the front seat of the car OR which documents are classified and which are not.

Trump’s representatives, at least for the moment, have settled on a story which is that he had a “standing order” that any and all classified materials he took home with him to the White House residence was “deemed” declassified. So in fact, none of the materials in question are classified and none of it matters. This was announced on Fox as an official statement from Trump’s office by John Solomon, the notorious fake news hustler who is now operating as Trump’s “designated representative” to the National Archives. – VIA TPM

You left out the best part — where they claimed he was “taking work home.” As if he has ever worked. Or was capable of reading documents without an executive summary done in crayon.

Yeah. That’s rich. But in the tortured logic of a trumper… “He is still President…He still needs to know stuff…so…he needs boxes of stuff.”

And oh yeah… Another good part. They got video of everyone who went into the rooms were the boxes were kept.

The important thing to remember about these people is that there are fewer of them than the media would have you believe.

“Trump claims he has secretly declassified all the documents he was hiding at Mar-a-Lago. First, it doesn’t work that way. Nuclear secrets can’t just be declassified unilaterally by the President. It requires a sign-off by the Department of Energy. Second, it is still a crime to take those documents even if they have been formally declassified.

And third, if the documents were really declassified, then anyone can read them now. In other words, to get out of legal jeopardy he is trying to let the Ayatollah in Iran, the leaders of Islamic State and all the branches of al-Qaeda, the Chinese government, Putin, hell, pick your international bad guy, all of them get to read some of America’s most closely guarded nuclear secrets now. I can’t imagine that will be allowed to happen, no matter how much the Trumpers scream and cry.”

I checked out some conservatives to see what they were saying about the videos, and this reaction is pretty standard:

Almost every single Trump “bombshell” boils down to him doing something mundane and the press using leaks to make it sound nefarious. Besides, in this case, it’s obvious why the government subpoenaed the surveillance footage: They wanted to keep Trump from releasing it.

It would now be illegal for the former president to release any footage taken of the FBI’s ridiculous raid, showing them rifling through Melania Trump’s underwear drawer. How convenient is that?

There is no rationalization that it too embarrassing to roll out.
