Tuesday’s Open Thread

Filed in National by on April 7, 2009

For those of you who are unfamiliar what an open thread is, it is a post open to all our visitors as a place to let everyone what’s on your mind — what articles you’ve been reading, what thoughts your having about subjects we haven’t covered, etc.

To help you out, some things you may have missed at Delaware Liberal: Markell shows leadership while ignoring theΒ  flacid Rick Jensen, Michelle Bachmann is doing her best Glen Close impersonation, the Queen is poisonous, and, on a more serious note, the shootings in Pittsburgh which we covered here and here.

So have fun and don’t be shy.

    The delawareway reports:

Breaking – John Carney To Run For Congress!

I heard it first on Community Crossfire!
Actually I was busy writing and half-heard Norman Oliver say that John Carney is running for Congress. May we assume he will be challenging Mr. Castle and may we further guess that Mike will bow out? OUCH.
Knowing how tightly Castle and Carper are joined at the hip, would Carney even do this without the Delaware Way having had its way already? [Translated: Mike isn’t running again].

  2. nemski says:

But we all say John Carney is running for Congress. Remember when we all though John Carney would be our next Senator. Good times, good times.

  3. Unstable Isotope says:

Seriously, how many times have I heard “Carney is running for Congress?” I’ve heard it so much I probably won’t believe it until Carney knocks on my door to tell me personally.

  4. nemski says:

Just because you have a bumper sticker that reads “Jesus is my co-pilot”, that doesn’t mean that you don’t have to pay attention to what is going around you.

  5. nemski says:

BTW, The Empire State Building is going green. Cost of $20 million with savings of $4.4 million per year.

  6. RSmitty says:

You mentioned Pittsburgh, so don’t forget the classic post of the Republican Mafia’s direct involvement with the massacre in NY last week as described here.

FTR, the media-partisan-pundit-blowhards of all persuasions are self-absorbed jagazzes who couldn’t give a rat’s ass about you or me, so, no, I don’t defend them.

  7. nemski says:

    You’re a little angry right now. πŸ˜‰

  8. anonone says:

How’s the old Mafia rebuilding going there, Rsmitty? πŸ™‚

  9. nemski says:

    I think he’s off killing bunnies. πŸ˜‰

  10. RSmitty says:

Well the blind squirrel (Jason) found his political-point nut with the Pittsburgh tragedy (have I ever stated my case about how the partisan-media-blowhards are jagazzes), but when he thought he found it with the NY tragedy, in which he was apparently wrong, he never had to deal with a come-uppance, because once it fell into an NRA debate, he just snuck out of the picture.

Didn’t John Carney say he was running for Congress on Delaware Talk Radio? I didn’t hear it, but could have sworn that I read someone report that a few months back….

  12. Joanne Christian says:

Aw geez, I think I’m ready for some cowbell….

  13. anonie says:

In 2010, the dems will pick up Delaware’s one House seat, 2 or three US Senate seats and lose 10-15 house seats (the dems are maxed out on pretty much all of the contested regions).

QOTD: When the economy turns around, what will the republican argument be? So far it’s been, it won’t work. When it does, what will the argument be?

  14. nemski says:

anonie, the answer will be that the economy goes in cycles.

Funny that the up cycles only occur in during Democratic Administrations.

  15. anon says:

When the economy turns around, what will the republican argument be?

    Cut taxes, of course.

  16. nemski says:

Kumar is off to work the White House . . . . he’s quite disappointed because he thought he was asked to work at White Castle.

  17. Rebecca says:

I heard from a pretty reliable source that John Carney is going to run. Not swearing to this or anything, but it looks like a very strong possibility. Huzzah – the NCCC will have a candidate they can support.

Just wanted to put this out there and see what everyone else thought…

So I flew from Philly to Austin on Saturday, with a layover in Chicago. On the flight from Chicago to Austin, I was awoken from a nice sleep by a man that was having what appeared to be a heart attack in the aisle next to me.

Long story short, there is a doctor on board, he tends to Ailing Man and recommends to the captain that we divert, which the captain does. Ailing Man recovers and walks off plane with EMS people.

Captain then explains to us that we cannot take off until we have a full oxygen tank, because the one on board was used for Ailing Man.

In the end, we end up in Springfield, MO for 7 hours while the captain and crew fly to St. Louis to get a new tank.

As we prepare to board, Ailing man gets in line to board after apparently waiving his right to a hospital visit. Delta gave the OK for him to board, but the captain says, “Uh. I don’t think so.” Ailing man becomes irate, and then is arrested.

I arrived in Austin 745 pm Saturday evening instead of 1100 am. My purpose for the trip was to attend a record show on Saturday and Sunday and to return home at 5 pm Sunday.

My question is this: Do I feel pissed that Ailing Man ruined my weekend, or do I feel relieved Ailing Man was unharmed and rather OK?

It is good to know there is no oxygen in Springfield MO.

  20. callit says:

    You ave no idea.

  21. anon says:

Never forget, Republicans want Obama to fail. That is their whole game plan.

Their biggest fear? What if due to Obama’s policies, the economy comes back better than ever?

The last CBO reports sucked, but their growth estimates are low. In the early 90s, they issued similar reports, and then kept revising them upward every quarter to account for the unexpected growth.

I always said if Bill Clinton had managed to keep his zipper closed, we’d be building public statues of him in towns all over the country.

    Remember this?

“My fellow Americans, the state of our union is the strongest it has ever been.” (2000)

I fully expect President Obama to be saying these same words sometime soon.

  22. anonone says:

    Callit:

It depends on your political party affiliation:

If you’re a liberal Democrat, you can feel pissed and guilty or you can feel relieved and virtuous.

If your a repub, you’re just happy that the guy was arrested.

And by the way in case you missed the link above…. the 2000 SOTU is a great read; it shows how fast and how far we have fallen:

  24. vyllyness says:

is there something SO WONNERFUL about Carney that I’ve missed over the years? I haven’t found this guy worthy of a second look in the years I’ve lived in Delaware…Please do tell, what is the love affair with him?

  25. Unstable Isotope says:

    Callit:

You can feel both relieved and pissed.

  26. jason330 says:

My question is this: Do I feel pissed that Ailing Man ruined my weekend, or do I feel relieved Ailing Man was unharmed and rather OK?

    Pissed.

    That was easy.

  27. Unstable Isotope says:

Thanks for sharing those links, TT. It’s good to see Republicans attempting to take their party back. It’s a shame that it takes a regular voter to take on Rush and not the so-called leaders.
