Open Thread: Jack Markell on WDEL 1150AM 1pm to 4pm Today

Filed in Delaware by on July 16, 2009

Update: I promoted this since they are on now.

Has a sitting Governor ever guest hosted a radio talk show? Will Brian Selander let any real questions get through? Is Rick Jensen’s studio alter to Sarah Palin still relatively unmolested? Will the guy who thinks the state should raise money by enforcing speed limits call back in? Has leaving the studio window open all night dissipated the smell of Copeland’s “Axe Body Spray” enough to make the studio usable?

So many questions. Leave you questions for Governor Markell, bile filled screeds or general concerns in the comments section.

  1. Delaware Dem says:

wRong Williams on Selander: “it could be a politically ingenious move or an utter disaster.”

I will go with the former.

  2. anon says:

Genius? Selander is a genius? Selander is there to protect the Guv and the Lt Guv from any hard questions. How bout we ask Jack about his decision to bring gambling to Delaware as an economic stimulus? Has Jack done his homework on gambling and what happens when a State goes to gambling? Many corporations will not come to Delaware because gambling is rampant, they want their people addicted!

Jack has a lot of answering to do. Jack, who were all those business suits you surrounded yourself with prior to your election. Did they represent the citizens of Delaware, or the big business lobbyists who over rule every good citizen initiative?

  3. Cutest Jack Pic evah!

  4. I agree with anon’s sentiments. I thought it was a bit odd for Selander to be in-studio with Denn the other day. I don’t see the necessity of him being in there outside of the fact that he once co-hosted the show with Jensen as well as the fact that he could serve as a buffer should any tough questions/criticisms be leveled against the Governor.

  5. Susan Regis Collins says:

You ain’t heard nothin’ yet….not to worry he’ll be replaced by Rago, running defense for the so-called 1st three term mayor.

  6. Yes, tomorrow’s show is going to be a real humdinger. I imagine the level of pure bullshit and spin to be spewed by Rago and Baker will cause any fact-checker’s head to explode.

  7. Delaware Dem says:

It is always better to have a co host on radio than not. It produces a conversation style that is easier to listen to than a monologue. Add that to the fact that Selander was Jensen’s co host for a while, and I think it is appropriate to have Selander there.

Has Markell ducked tough questions? Not that I have seen. I doubt he will do it now or have Selander screen his calls.

  8. Al Mascitti says:

I was here at WDEL for the Denn guest-hosting (for all of them, actually). Selander was in to work the phones mechanically — pushing the button to put someone on the air. He also chimed in with Denn, but no questions were screened out. Denn did a fine job of simply ignoring questions he didn’t feel like answering.

  9. Al Mascitti says:

DD: Were you listening? I thought it was incredibly artful, though of course rather arrogant. I forget what the caller was asking, but Denn simply acted as if he couldn’t hear him. Just outright ignored him. I might steal that approach with a couple of my regular callers.

  10. Delaware Dem says:

I was listening off and on at work, and I heard both Brian and Matt talking, so I assumed they were both in studio co-hosting.

  11. Al Mascitti says:

My impression of Matt Denn is that nobody tells him what to do. If he wants to answer the question he will, and if he doesn’t want to, nobody can force him to.

  12. Susan Regis Collins says:

Does the Lt. Gov. care to answer the question: Why was 1st State Community Action Agency funneled ‘recovery $’ (4.5M) which in turn granted the Hope(less) Commission some portion? Could it have something to do w/Tony Allen (on Hopeless board) and his wife working in the Lt. Gov. office?

Oh yea, the Delaware Wayward system working at it’s best????

    Please respond.

  13. Another Mike says:

I likely will not get a chance to call in, but can someone please ask how the state can continue to justify the “double state share,” or whatever the hell it’s called, which offers free health care coverage when both spouses work for the state? Every other state employee had his or her premiums increased, but not those with two state employees. Karen Peterson has called this unfair and potentially illegal, since it treats employees differently, even those who, in every other way, are exactly the same.

A relative who works for the state also tells me that far too many employees have access to state credit cards, and state cell phone abuse is rampant.

Also, why, instead of cutting the state payroll, were so many taxes and fees raised? Every other sector of the workforce has endured layoffs, so why not the state government?

  14. jason330 says:

Anybody listening? I suspect (like Denn) the Governor is out to not make news today.

  15. Oof…it’s almost like a big circle-(fest) of partisan proportions.

You know I don’t have problems with Gov Markell or Selander, but c’mon, smoochie poohs all around for D’s.

I want Kowalko to call in! John! John! John! John!

  16. Selander hung up on “Nancy”. Tell me that wasn’t Willing!!! Oh man, hell hath no fury like a Willing scorned by Selander!!! 😛

  17. smoochie poohs to Earl Jacques right now. xoxoxoxoxo

Man, I’m seeing my contacts being ripped to shreds right about now…. 😯

  18. Delaware Dem says:

Damn, I missed that. And I would like Kowalko to call in too. That would be fun.

What was the woman saying? Was her name really Nancy?

  19. Delaware Dem says:

I just got an email from Brian saying that he accidentally hung up on Nancy (and yes, it was Nancy) and he apologized on air. The phone lines are jammed there, apparently.

  20. I twittered to DE Politics that he hung up on me. I figured that he was reading them when he responded. heh. I think he impulsively just let that finger slam down….ouch.

  21. Darryl “no cell phone for you” Scott coming on.

    Yup…smooches all around! xoxoxoxoxo
Ok, that honsestly wasn’t as smoochie, gaah…until now, after he hung up.

  22. Denn did a fine job of simply ignoring questions he didn’t feel like answering.

Sounds like the lawyer in him. Disciplined. They were telling the same jokes over and over and over. Most at Rick Jensen’s expense.

Markell’s show has been dumb joke-free so far. Only a few indirect references to the Republicans “handler” meme.

  23. OK, fairness here…he just gave props to Cathcart, Short, and Sorensen for directing the caucuses (my summary) in getting it done.

  24. Liz Allen is back!!! On the phone right now.
