Tom Kovach Shows How It’s Done–Any Candidates Paying Attention?

Filed in Delaware by on August 17, 2009

“All politics is local.”- ‘Tip’ O’Neill-former U. S. Speaker of the House

“90% of success is just showing up.” Woody Allen

Those are two quotes that any and every would-be candidate and elected official must not only memorize, but incorporate into their campaigns.

State Representative Tom Kovach (R-6th District) ‘just showed up’ on Saturday at the Miles for Melanoma benefit at Twin Lakes Brewery in Greenville, an event jointly-sponsored by Delaware Liberal. By doing so, he earned a lot of goodwill from all those involved in the event, including many from DL who otherwise might not give a Republican legislator a second thought.

Nobody would have thought any less of him (or any other politican) for not braving this dog-day Saturday afternoon in an off-year to be there. In fact, (and this is what’s important) nobody gave the politicos who weren’t there a second thought. But everyone remembers that Tom Kovach was there. He didn’t spend all day there. He didn’t have to. People appreciated that he made the effort on behalf of Miles for Melanoma, and they will remember it.

The Beast who Slumbers is in no way saying that candidates should relentlessly be campaigning full-time over a year out from the 2010 General Election. Nor is he saying that candidates should not have plenty of family time and vacation time. What he is saying to all prospective candidates is that (a) if you’re around; and (b) you have access to lists of events taking place in your area (why wouldn’t you?); and (c) you fail to make even a token attempt to at least get out there and be seen in your district or in your region, then you have just missed an opportunity that was there for the taking.  Anything from an hour at a community yard sale to a charitable fundraiser, and you’ve got the rest of the day free.

Here’s what El Somnambulo knew about Tom Kovach before Saturday: (1) He appeared to be a moderate representative serving the people of the 6th District much in the tradition of Dave Ennis and Diana McWilliams; (2) While likely facing a strong challenge in his D-leaning district, he seems to be looked on favorably by his constituents; (3) He’s already been mentioned as a possible candidate for higher office.

To that, El Somnambulo adds (4) He took the time to come out and meet people on behalf of a very worthwhile cause. For candidates who were available but took the weekend off, Tom Kovach outworked you all. Attention should be paid.

A very nice guy as well & smart (hates George Bush with a white hot passion (I don’t know that for sure but I pretty good at predicting these things)).

Anyway, I would never have picked him out of a line-up as a Republican.

  2. Good for him but the minute he votes or does not support one of your ideas you will skewer him.

Politicians come to a lot of events. The reason you don’t notice is because YOU don’t show up (myself included). The fall festival season is especially popular. There are usually some pols working the crowds at the Brandywine Arts Festival, Arden, Newark Days (or whatever it’s called), and Ag Day (I think).

  4. Delaware Dem says:

No doubt. But more politicians like Tom Kovach in the GOP and less like you will only increase the civility.

  5. anon2 says:

Tom Kovach is my legislator. I found him to be very interested in hearing from the people regardless of party. We need more like him in Delaware politricks.

  6. Good for Mr. Kovach. I think it probably paid off for him, too, since he’s getting good publicity.

  7. Another Mike says:

Tom Kovach is my rep. I called his office several months ago with a question and he called me back the next day and spent 10-15 minutes on the phone with me. He made no promises, which was fine with me. Just the fact that he bothered to call and listen to me was enough. I have tremendous respect for him.

  8. LaNuit says:

How did Kovach vote on SB 90 when it came before committee (the first time)?

I believe he voted against the measure. Actually, I know he did.

    Actions talk, bullshit walks.

  9. WTF are you talking about LaNut? The report has it coming out of house committee as 9 on its merits and no other vote. How many people voted against it on the floor? None? You don’t say. The public record shows that no one voted against it. Wait…Actually, I know he did. Oh dear, then someone in Leg Hall needs to get their ass fired for misinforming the public. WTF, LaNut? The bi-partisan acceptance of this past weekend too much for you to stomach? All you did was legitimize the stereotyping Protack put out in an earlier comment. He laid it out and you walked right into it. You stepped in the pile of shit he laid here. Aargh…self-righteous shit!!! Booooo!!!!
