Oh Thank God. Someone is challenging Gordon. Everyone vote for Matt Meyer

Filed in National by on March 17, 2016

A Wilmington attorney who has served as an economic advisor to the U.S. State Department and Gov. Jack Markell is running for New Castle County Executive this fall, setting up a primary challenge for incumbent Tom Gordon. From WDEL:

Matt Meyer, a Democrat living in the city’s Trinity Vicinity, said on Wednesday that he decided to run because he felt residents deserved leadership that isn’t bogged down in political infighting and focuses more on the county’s economic status.

Meyer [is also] the founder of Vitumob, a web service that connects millions of people in Eastern Africa with distributors and retailers like Amazon, said he doesn’t believe the county is doing enough to retain existing businesses before drastic steps are needed, like the millions of dollars in state and county money offered to keep DowDupont spinoff businesses in Delaware.

“We’re looking at some of our core industries…it’s hard not to see–at least with respect to the big companies–there’s some decline there and we need real leadership to come up with innovative ways to build a new economy,” he said. […]

During his time with the state department, Meyer was also embedded with military personnel in Iraq and created a footwear business called Ecosandals while spending time in Nairobi, Kenya.

Sounds promising. At the very least, he gives someone to vote for in voting against Tom Gordon.

  1. Charles in Charge says:

I’m glad someone has the guts since Ciro was too scared to run for CE. At this point I know many who would have voted for the republican over Tommy G.

  2. cassandra_m says:

Way to Go, Matt! He’s a very good guy, with a strong commitment to public service. He’s got alot of work ahead of him, but I’m in his corner, for certain.

  3. AQC says:

I’ve had brief discussions with him and liked him a lot. I’m with him!

  4. SussexAnon says:

Former Markell advisor with plans on doing more to keep business’ here.

Let’s just skip to the end where he says the “innovative solutions” are tax cuts, tax cuts and what was that third one? oh, yeah, tax cuts.

  5. Jason330 says:

It is a very good introduction ad. I like his sensibilities. The tax cuts as “innovative solutions” is just the air that all politicians breath right now. Try finding a Democrat that hasn’t internalized all the GOP supply side bullshit.

  6. SussexAnon says:

It doesn’t exactly make him a new kind of leader then, does it?

  7. Jason330 says:

You are making the perfect the enemy of the good. (possibly very good)

  8. SussexAnon says:

By comparison to Gordon, he is an angel. But, really, economic adviser to Markell? Maybe if he was an adviser to Markell on something that actually worked out.

  9. Jason330 says:

    lol. Good point.

  10. c'est la vie says:

I’m with Cassandra. Matt is smart with a sterling work ethic. He’s just a nice guy too.

It’s disheartening so many here are so quick to condemn good people because they chose to work in public service for one of our state’s elected leaders.

  11. SussexAnon says:

Not condemning him because he chose to work in public service.

Just pointing out he was an adviser to failed policies. If he distances him from those failed policies by saying his suggestions were over ruled, great. If he has even better ideas, like, say, giving breaks to micro-business’, you know, REAL small business’ that repeatedly get ignored in these giveaways, then more power to him.

  12. I really appreciate the vibrancy of discussion on DL boards in general and on this one in particular. I am always eager to hear new ideas to make our county better, particularly better policies to create new and better jobs. That certainly includes those viewpoints that may be directly critical of me. My economic plan is coming. And I want you to have your voice in it. Please reach out to me through my website and let’s discuss. Matt http://www.mattmeyer2016.com

  13. JTF says:

    cringe

  14. JTF says:

i hope a ghostwriter wrote that. it was painful to read.

  15. JTF says:

is that how you talk in real life? as an actual human? if so, stop. and just go hide somewhere until election day and you’ll probably win considering you’re running against a crook and lunatic. but i refuse to listen to that utter bullshit for 4 years.

  16. SussexAnon says:

What was so wrong about Meyer’s comment? Yeah, it’s boiler plate, but what did you expect? He’s been on the campaign trail for what? 5 minutes?

I look forward to reading his economic plan.

  17. Brooke says:

Some days it’s like this whole board is written by Statler and Waldorf.

Of course, perhaps with Muppets running the political landscape, that’s to be expected. 😀

  18. AQC says:

Matt, piece of advice – save your energy. Trying to have reasonable discussion on blogs is pointless. On this one, if you ever walked on the same street with Carper, Coons, Carney or Markell, you’re a conservative in disguise.

  19. Gotta say I really liked the ad. The highlighting and the point-and-click reinforced his message very well. Couldn’t take my eyes off it.

The ad also made me want to learn more about this guy. So, all in all, a very successful introduction.

I DO understand people’s skepticism, especially after Sean Barney’s candidacy. But this guy is way more articulate than Barney from the jump. And the idea of a real credible challenge to the corrupt Gordon machine is exciting.

  20. SussexDem40 says:

That’s a high level ad for someone who’s only been campaigning for a day or so. As good or better than any of the other political ads I’ve seen this season. Can’t wait to see what the campaign puts out once it gets experience.

  21. I know. I hadn’t even heard his name until today. He must have some real good people working with him.

If it’s true that you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression, he needn’t worry. That first impression was plenty good.

  22. the godfather says:

I agree with El Som. Meyer appears to have the tools to be a good candidate. His African experiences and his teaching minority students should make him very attractive to minority and progressive communities. His life experiences suggest an altruistic person of good values. I do not agree with the ,criticism and skepticism that has been expressed here. Are you folks that jaded that you can;t believe that there is good and altruism in his motives for running for office. His life experiences certainly support authenticity in this regard. Perhaps those cynical and harsh judgements are the result of those judging him by their own personal shortcomings

  23. Joe Cass says:

Meyers will win and walk into council to hear Drago, “I must break you.”

  24. Jason330 says:

AQC – I get the point of your hyperbole. A more accurate way of saying that would have been… if you have internalized the economic policies of Carper, Coons, Carney or Markell, you’re a conservative.

  25. Andy says:

Anyone associated with Markell must be met with scepticism

  26. While that’s true, the guy created a company specifically designed to be both environmentally proactive and to be a source of sustenance for some of the most impoverished people on earth.

    And then there’s Tom Gordon…

I’m all in. It’s up to the voters to decide whether they deserve someone in elective office who has accomplished as much as Meyer has. If they vote for him they do. If they don’t, they get what they deserve.

This isn’t even a close call.

  27. Veronica says:

Here’s a county employee who was just thinking ‘I can’t take another four years of this crap’ and was ready to quit. Matt’s Hold On, Change is Coming motto came at exactly the right moment and felt like a personal message to me to hang in there.

  28. Tom Kline says:

Matt’s ideas cost tax payers millions. He’s just another loser that couldn’t cut it in the private sector.

  29. John Manifold says:

Matt would obviously be a 300 percent improvement over the gang that’s polluted county government for most of the last 20 years. I look forward to learning more about him.

The spitballs above remind me of the propeller-heads who told us four years ago that Paul Baumbach must be evil because he works in the financial sector [and that Jerry Grant, his noble primary opponent, must be likewise bad because he wears a tie to work and doesn’t play Lynyrd Skynyrd].
