Don’t Pile on da Rabbit!

I almost feel sorry for Gonzales. Not only did the NYT call for his resignation, but now even his own party is calling for his head (almost literally).

John Cornyn (R-TX) : “In Texas, we believe in having a fair trial and then we have the hanging.”

Ouch. John Sununu is also calling for his ouster. I’m betting on a Friday resignation with a full weekend to let the new candidate be talked up on the overwhelmingly conservative Sunday talk shows. Isn’t the rule inDC that it’s not the act, it’s the cover-up?

Meanwhile back in Delaware…

    Wonder if Sununu’s fired now

Hopefully I don’t get Kilroy’s boot for saying this, but…c’mon…do any of us really think that Gonzales is the true single point of contact for this?

  4. liberalgeek says:

Obviously. Clearly, there is a link here between Miers and Gonzales. One can assume that Miers was not working in a vacuum. Bush has lucked out that he is out of town while the defecation is hitting the oscillating rotor.

  5. motnewbie says:

Oh, trust me, I don’t think Bush is the single-point, either. My view is the think tank tells him the drill and he goes yay or neigh (that’s how he spells it in his mind as he says it).

Newbie glances over his shoulder as that boot used on Kilroy turns and peers his way.

Where was this headline six years ago?

Please, please make this story go away. It is one of those stories where people wouldn’t have had an opinion either way until each side told them what to think. Politicians are playing politics!! vs. Clinton did it too!! Why are people grabbing onto a story about 8 US attorneys? The Constitution is clearly on the president’s side, which doesn’t make it right per se, but you should be able to see how the power might be valuable to a ‘good’ president.(assuming we ever see a good president again, though the outlook is not so good).

I usually don’t buy into the smokescreen stories, but this is an obvious smokescreen to hide the justice departments abuse of the patriot act. Leave the A.G. alone, he is an idiot and a partisan hack, but he is just a minion. The Dems and Repubs should be calling for the ouster of the head of the FBI who is knowingly under-reporting and abusing the patriot act. Unlike a lot of people, I am not totally against the patriot act, but when the FBI does crap like this they make their supporters look stupid.

  8. liberalgeek says:

This is not a non-story. There are many aspects of this that are damning. Yes Clinton and Reagan did clean sweeps of their US Attorneys, they are political appointments, so this is normal. However, the way in which these were executed indicates that they were due to resistance of these individuals to politicizing of the justice system. USA’s that didn’t pursue corruption cases against Democrats or that went after Republicans (e.g. Duke Cunningham) were removed.
In addition, they were using provisions in the Patriot act that were designed to quickly replace a USA if he is killed by a terrorist, not if they are not toeing the line politically.
Finally, Gonzales’ assertion that he didn’t know what was going on is true and utter BS. These are 50 of the top 100 jobs in Justice. To lie and indicate that he had no idea that it was happening throws the credibility and competence of Gonzales into doubt.
This is one of W. longest serving minions. If this causes him to lose his job, as it has the capability to do, it is a story.

    Hey Geek –

I was going to do a post about Castle reading “My Pet Goat” to the kids (no pun intended), but I thought it worked better as an addition to your. I hope you don’t mind.
