Was Burris grandstanding? Yes or No

Delaware blogger, Celia Cohen covers the downstate sturm und drang:

It was not John Atkins who was under fire, however. It was David M. Burris, the impetuous Sussex County Republican chair who took over the post all of two months ago — long enough to write an open letter telling the House Republican majority either to get Atkins to resign or vote to expel him.

Party rules did not permit a vote to remove Burris in mid-term, but he agreed to call for a vote of no-confidence and abide by it. In exchange, the issue would never come up again.

(In closed session) Atkins spoke and took exception to Burris’ letter. He was countered by others, including Simpson, who said Burris acted to restore integrity to the party, and by A. Judson Bennett, who runs the Coastal Conservative Network.

“If he doesn’t get this vote of confidence, I don’t want to be a member of this [county] committee anymore,” Bennett said. (The doors do not exist that can muffle Bennett’s voice.)

Oh the humanity! …Atkins should have stayed in Florida.

[UPDATE II: Dave Burris is not  the father of Anna Nicole Smith’s child.  I just want to put that rumor to rest here and now.  It is Birkhead.]

I think we all know that one person is going to vote “yes”

I just wanted to test out htis new polling software which seems like it is going to work pretty well.

    Burris for GOP State Chair.

    There, I said it.

Leadership with Integrity for A Delaware Republican Renewal.

  3. anon says:

Both A and B. I think he showed guts and he did the right thing… but I also think he was grandstanding. And invoking “honor” and calling on the ancestors was WAY over the top. So I voted yes.

Dave, now please consult your ancestors about Bush.

  4. Disbelief says:

I swear, I only voted once (a bold departure from the Smyrna mayoral race vis a vis the candidate with GOP leanings and a fondness for Prince ‘Lil Johnny Still’s nether parts no matter how small they are).

  5. Burris for GOP State Chair.

There, I said it too (not that it makes a difference)

My feeling is that he only changed his mind when certain, painful information came to light.
So, there is a bit of on-the-fence here knowing Dave uses every ploy for party gain.

There was a pow=wow last night in which he put it all on the line and got an unanimous vote of confidence – with Atkins in the room.

So, maybe he will start to come around again now that the pressure is off.

  6. Disbelief says:

Does anyone think it just a bit disappointing that we could disagree with the poll statement above “Yes. Atkins was toast.”

How could a public servant elected by the people to defend the Delaware Constitution NOT be toast after the acts he committed. I’m starting to think I’m not the more cynical of the bunch here.

  7. jason330 says:

Clearly Burris was not grandstanding when he wrote that letter.

As we see from reading Cohen, even as late as LAST NIGHT he had to hammer ANOTHER stake in the Count Dumbass-ula’s heart.

If I was Burris, I’d keep a bottle of holy water around and a few more stakes on hand.

  8. anon says:

Cohen is a moron. Burris was far from “impetuous” (rash, impulsive, hasty) when he wrote and sent that letter.

She has no idea what she is doing.

  9. ANON. says:

You folks are forgetting its not this meeting that matters, if the republicans lose the seat, the county republicans may have another opinion next month!

  10. Disbelief says:

In a fair world, a GOP loss for the Sussex County seat should not be held against Burris. But I’ll bet you a dollar to ten it will.

  11. Clearly Burris was not grandstanding when he wrote that letter.

Nancy – I am confused…are you NOW saying that he was grandstanding? If so, that wasn’t your tune before. If not, my bad, it’s hard to follow your path here.

  15. Cardinal says:

MOT, two words: “In Honor Of Those Who Came Before”?

    No, that’s not grandstanding.
