My Take on Falwell

Filed in Uncategorized by on May 16, 2007

I just saw that while I was doing other things, I was called out by HubeHube and I had a huge debate about Louis Farrakhan a few weeks ago when I said that I didn’t hate Farrakhan.  Hube thought that it would be OK to hate him.  Today Hube called me out for being happy about Falwells death.  This despite any commentary by me.

I will set the record straight.  I am no fan of Jerry Falwell, but I am saddened to see anyone die.  Falwell created a debate about issues that I may not have felt as strongly about without his vitriol to create the contrast.  I also blogged about his Liberty University and the feelings that it evoked in me.  I have tried real hard to control the anger that welled in me when I heard him speak and when he used Christianity to create fear, uncertainty and doubt.

Larry Flynt and Jerry Falwell together broke new legal ground and paved the way (partially) for what we are doing here today.  For the record, Larry Flynt also appreciates this aspect of Falwell’s legacy.  Call me old-fashioned, but I am going to let Jerry rest without me spitting on his grave.  I only hope that Pat Robertson lives long enough for me to savage him for every moronic, hateful and licentious remark that he makes for the next 20 years.

I can’t find my original comment, but I didn’t claim you said “it’d be OK to hate him.” I was comparing the vitriol directed at Falwell (not by you, admittedly) here all day (and yesterday) to what you had said a while back about Farrakhan. And that point stands. IOW, it’s “OK” for Farrakhan to spew his hate b/c he has done “some good things.” It’s NOT OK, OTOH, for Falwell’s hateful comments because…. hmm, well HE has done some good things too, but b/c liberals don’t LIKE those good things Falwell is just a hateful bigot, etc. etc. etc.

I’m sorry for the misunderstanding regarding yourself and I am glad to see you state you ‘won’t spit on Falwell’s grave,’ I am far from a Falwell fan (I myself put his website on Colossus’ “Good For Cheap Laughs” blogroll), but again, my comparison stands in general terms.

Doh! Geek linked to my comment. Sorry, it’s late for me. Yeesh. But it proves my point. Check it:

Funny that you guys don’t use the liberalgeek method of rationalization. After all, Geek stated that Louis Farrakhan “has done some good,” and even though he didn’t agree w/all Louie has said and done, again, one “has to admit” he did some good.

Funny how that doesn’t apply to Falwell, eh?

Notice I said “you guys,” Geek, meaning “those who’ve commented.” That wasn’t you. I just used your name in regards to the “method of rationalization.”

    Hube,

I see what you were saying. So, you were accusing them of not being like me… They may like that. Sorry that I mischaracterized your comment.
