Coal gasification as a back-up to wind is a boondoggle

And yet, DNREC’s Phil Cherry appears to be smitten with it.

I thought Phil was a savvy guy. But during the PSC hearings, he pushed hard for NRG to get another bite at the apple.

According to Tom – if coal gasification is used to back-up wind power it would be the worst possible backup. Slow and dirty to start up, untested coarbon sequstration, and possibly huge downstream costs to the the envirnment and to ratepayers who will be asked to suck up any increases that might be brought about by changes to exisiting clean air legislation.
