Carper & Carney Keeping “The Deal” Story Alive – But Why?

Filed in National by on May 20, 2007

Tommy comments on Ron Williams carrying water for the Carper/Carney axis as they continue to try and breath life into the completely and absolutely de-bunked “deal” story.

It is easy to discern Carney’s motives – as things stand now he will lose the primary against Markell and he knows it – so why not try to finess a deal?

But you have to ask, “What is Carper’s angle?” Why is Carper so public about trying to put something together. In don’t pretend to know what goes on inside of the heads of the Democratic Party’s Brahmins but this story has me more confused than ever. You know Carper is not up to his elbows in this for the sake of “party unity.” Carper does not roll that way. Carper is for Carper.

So what is up?

I don’t know either but speculating as to motive, I’d say Carper’s goal is to protect Castle by locking the up-and-coming Dems into some kind of deal.

The Del Dem priority should be to unseat Castle, not to avoid primaries for safe seats.

If any of these well-known Dems were even to announce against Castle, it would probably provoke Castle’s retirement. I don’t see Castle fighting a hard campaign that he might not win, just to retain his seat on the minority side.

I suspect Carper’s role is to enforce the taboo on going after Castle.

Carper broke the taboo himself by unseating Roth. Now, all of a sudden he is out to protect Castle? I don’t know. I know they are lovers and all, but Carper is out for Carper.

Take it one level lower – does Carper want to keep the aged and dottering Castle around for another cycle so he can get Biden Jr. in Congress?

I know I’m in tin foil hat territory – but this “deal” crap does not add up.

If Jack Markell or John Carney would care to comment I’d appreciate it. Please use “anon” and we’ll keep it all between us. No point wakeing Ron Williams.

The only mystery is why Gannett continues to pay Ron Williams retype Celia Cohen’s columns.

No one actually believes this, do they?

  5. liberalgeek says:

I don’t. I know that it would be a battle and that the winner would knock the block off of little Al.

  6. FSP says:

Everyone remotely close to the situation knows that Carney would walk away with it, regardless of how much money Markell has. Carney has the infrastructure, the unions and he’s more liberal than Jack, so the red meat Dems would love it. He walks away with it.

  7. liberalgeek says:

hmmm. Not so sure. But I am happy with either. Also, those resources go to the victor. So that is why little Al doesn’t stand a chance. There are only so many people in the Chamber…

  8. FSP says:

You keep believing that, and I’ll be perfectly happy.

  9. anon says:

I think you have carper and biden confused. Carper is well known for his interest in party unity.

  10. Disbelief says:

If Carney believed FSPs read that “Carney would walk away with it”, why bother with the deal at all? It simply makes Carney look weak to keep pushing this.

On the face of the situation as portrayed by the only semi-reputable source (the WNJ), it would appear that there is at least some concern on the part of the military-industrial-ugly complex (Minner) that her peeps (Patterson, Carney, et. al.) are a bit worried about keeping their monopololy over the Dems. This “Minner Consortium” is identical to the Rakestraw-Strine Compact that attempts to dictate to the DE GOP. We just don’t need this kind of crap in either party.

  11. FSP says:

No one wants to run in a primary. It’s as simple as that. Notice, however, that no version of the so-called deal has Carney anywhere but on the top line. That lends support to my thought that the conventional wisdom is that Carney is favored to win.

  12. Disbelief says:

That Carney proposed a deal where he remains in the top slot is not proof of anything material except that it makes Carney a bit nervous. Saying the deal in itself legitimizes Carney’s chances of success is like saying you should accept the first price a car dealer hands you. If he and Carper were that concerned about a primary, then why didn’t they offer a deal that everyone would accept: Carper retires, and Carney runs for his slot, Markell goes for Governor, Blunt and Denn can decide on the Lt. Gov. slot. And Carper abdicating would not then appear to be a suspicious move a la Jane Brady or Donna Lee Williams.

  13. Nancy Willing says:

The black man gets the blame, that is how a few Democrats are taking the Williams commentary and they do not like it one bit.
I have a request in to Jack Markell to tell me one way or the other if this rumor is true, that he was in on cutting a deal with Carper et al that only fell through when Blunt balked.

I don’t think it is true that Markell would have entertained this notion for a minute.

We’ll see what Jack has to say. Should Ted Blunt be taking this kind of heat?

  14. jason330 says:

Jack has said from day one that he was not interested in a deal. How much more candid about it can he be?

  15. Nancy Willing says:

I just think a statement that clears Blunt is now necessary.
