Breaking: Newt is IN
You heard it here first.
Newt is entering the race as the anti-Romney. Where Fip Romney is all about the smooth look and feel, shading his message for each audience and even flipping 180 degrees on topics near and dear to the Republican base – Newt is running for the GOP nomination as the unapologetic “bull in the China shop” flame-thrower.
Evidence of the run came fast and furious yesterday. First the politco reported:
Newt Gingrich’s 527 group spent $136,000 in April on travel, aides’ salaries, advice from a prominent Iowa political consultant and other expenses that seem a lot like those racked up by the presidential candidates.
Then came the blanket condemnation of the GOP field:
“We have shrunk our political process to this pathetic dance in which people spend an entire year raising money in order to offer nonanswers, so they can memorize what their consultants and focus groups said would work,” Gingrich said.
Notice how that wording seems to describe Romney.
And finally Newt made a clear break with Bush yesterday. Unlike Romney who is working hard to curry favor with the White House by pledging his support to Bush’s war and declaring his desire to “double the size of Guantanamo”, Newt blasts the Administration:
“Let me be clear: twenty-eight-per-cent approval of the President, losing every closely contested Senate seat except one…that’s a collapse.” Gingrich blames “not only Iraq and Hurricane Katrina but also Karl Rove’s ‘maniacally dumb’ strategy in 2004, which left Bush with no political capital.”
“When you have the collapse of the Republican Party, you have an immediate turn toward the Democrats,”
Add it all up and Newt is going to announce by July 4th. Mark your calendar.
UPDATE: As much as I dislike Newt – I’m glad he is in. He has a sort of Harrison Greely flair to him.

I’ve been expecting this for a while now. Any day, really…he set himself up all along by saying if he feels he is needed, he will run….now it looks like he’s saying he’s needed.
Moreover, I think Newt has a good shot at the Republican nomination…now, if Gore moves towards running, we’d have the match I expected…
That is some out of the box thinking (with regard to Gore I mean).
Newt wanted to be begged. I guess he hears the begging on a sub-sonic level, like a dog whistle.

Newtie very much likes to hear himself talk about how he is the Smartest.Republican.Ever. I always wonder if he isn’t angling for something else and using this Presidential cycle to do it.
It is interesting to me that as Newt speaks he is completely unaware of his own role in the so-called collapse of Republicans by not only institutionalizing the hyper-partisanship but also be being the leading edge of the “Family Values” hypocracy.

This is classic Jason. Not even remotely true, but J thinks if he says it over and over and over and over, it will become true.

It is not only remotely true it is actually and verifiably true. The call to double the size of Guantanamo is just one instance where Flip threw some red meat out because he sensed a red meat loving audience.
As for abortion where his family friend needed one he was for it – now he is running so he is against it. If that is not the definition of flip floppery, I don’t know what is.

Again, I like Rudy. Mean as a snake all the time. Good leader and administrator. (Even though I’m a little pissed about his slight retreat on some social issues he has long stood behind)
But God’s truth, I think gays and rights to life platforms are going to quickly fall by the wayside with $3 gas, a cluster fuque of a war, Gonzalez-like mismanagment of government, higher interest rates, etc.
if you’d been paying attention, Newt’s been “running” for President since at least 2005.
So Ryan didn’t here it here first – but likes Tom Tancredo and that speaks volumes.
Ryan is now also saying that Fred Thompson is in – those two could make the race much more interesting, as recent polls show Republicans on the whole are much more dissatisfied with the current field than are the Democrats…
Newt is a stand up guy.
I want the kind of guy that leaves and ailing wife for a newer, fresher piece of ass running my country!
Think of how much better he’ll make Rudy look. They are talking about Guantanamo, but they mean Gomorrah.
