Gay Marriage Survives in Massachusetts

Filed in Uncategorized by on June 14, 2007

I brought this back to the top because I think we all need to reflect a bit longer on how the Massachusetts legislature has succeeded in their mission to demolish our hetero marriages. – jason

Today there was a vote in the Massachusetts Legislature that could have put a measure on the ballot to amend the Mass. Constitution to specifically prohibit gay marriage. Only 50 of 196 legislators had to vote to approve the measure, and it failed 151-45. This means that same-sex partnerships will have the same rights as traditional marriages until at least 2012.

  2. Horray for Massachusetts! Civil rights issues should never be subject to a vote. Our Constitution has clearly established the principle that the rights of the miniority should never be subject to the vote of the majority. If civil rights were based on state majority vote, there would still be “colored” and “white” restrooms in all southern states. The wise decision of Supreme Court justices in the 1950’s acknowledged that the doctrine of “Seperate But Equal” was inheirently unequal. For the same reason the current bigoted “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy is exclusionary. Under the DADT policy it would be OK for a service-person to have a picture of their wife or girlfriend on their desk. However, if a gay had a picture of their “significant other” on their desk they might be legitimately dismissed. How ludicrous!
Just because many states outlawed marriages between blacks and whites for years, didn’t make it right. In is truly homophobic that most of the Republican, “compassionate conservatives” are sill trying to impose their brand of morality on all. Govenor Mitt Rommney went on record by saying that the vote was, “regrettable.” He went on to say, “This makes it more important than ever that we pass a national admendment banning gay marriage.” Constitutional admendments have always expanded on the definition of civil rights and not reduced them. By the way, our King George is also in favor of such an admendment. Outside of the Mass. Statehouse there were protestors proclaiming that it was “unconstitutional” not to permit them to vote on the legality of gay marriage. Apparently it’s OK to limit the rights of any designated miniority, as long as their not a part of it. It’s just amazing how small minds think in small ways!
