UPDATED: H.R.2956 – Mike Castle Votes to Support George Bush Yet Again

Filed in National by on July 13, 2007

UPDATE: Castle has released a statement trying to explain why he is sticking with George Bush and his “stay the course” strategy. Long story short: “George Bush and I are smarter than you.”

I guess I won my bet with Wenk. Here is the text and some comments from me below

Title: To require the Secretary of Defense to commence the reduction of the number of United States Armed Forces in Iraq to a limited presence by April 1, 2008, and for other purposes.
Sponsor: Rep Skelton, Ike [MO-4] (introduced 7/10/2007) Cosponsors (43)

SUMMARY AS OF:
7/10/2007–Introduced.

Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act – Expresses the sense of Congress that: (1) the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 authorized the President to use the Armed Forces as appropriate to defend U.S. national security against the continuing threat posed by the government of Iraq at the time; (2) the government of Iraq which was in power at that time has been removed; (3) the current Iraqi government does not pose a threat to the United States; and (4) after more than four years of efforts by members of the Armed Forces and U.S. civilians, the government of Iraq must now be responsible for Iraq’s future course.

Directs the Secretary of Defense to commence the reduction of the number of Armed Forces in Iraq beginning no later than 120 days after the enactment of this Act and complete the reduction and transition to a limited presence in Iraq by no later than April 1, 2008

Directs the President, by January 1, 2008, to transmit to the congressional defense, appropriations, and foreign relations committees a comprehensive U.S. strategy for Iraq. Requires the President to update such strategy no later than July 1, 2008, and every 90 days thereafter, including a description of the number of Armed Forces deployed to Iraq and the missions for which they are so deployed.

Mike Castle has either decided that he is not running again OR he feels that his loyalty to Bush makes him impervious to public opinion. He has created a voting record that he cannot win with against ANY decent Democratic candidate. Over the past 6 years Mike Castle has demonstrated that he has utter contempt for his constituents in Delaware.

The Bottom Line: At this point Mike Castle can only win re-election if the Joe Biden, Tom Carper and John Daniello permit him to be re-elected.

“Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act ”

    Talk about spin….

  2. jason330 says:

I’ll take it over “The Irresponsible Policy of Staying the Course in Iraq” which is what we have now.

  3. kavips says:

I would have agreed with your final statement, maybe 7 months ago, but now, and I’m being serious, I am not so sure it holds true.

The Bottom Line: At this point Mike Castle can only win re-election if the Joe Biden, Tom Carper and John Daniello permit him to be re-elected.

    Kav,

While I think blogs can put a little pressure on the State Leg. No matter how much noise we make, Castle is probably a lock to win again if Tom Carper, Joe Biden and John Daniello decide to let him stay put.

  5. anon says:

    Castle’s statement:

“Over the last several months, similar attempts on the part of the Democratic leadership to require an arbitrary date for troop withdrawal have gone nowhere, wasting precious time debating legislation that would be vetoed by the President.”

  6. kavips says:

Again, I don’t think so. There are too many ways out there for one to go around the roadblocks already set up…….Those three will meddle in the Democrat party, to be sure, but, it will not be to the extent that they can guarantee a lock, which they have had in the past…….All they really control, is the “voice” of Organized Labor. They can only hope the rank and file will choose to do what their bosses say.

To those of us with bosses of our own….how often does that happen?

  7. was Kavips mayhaps facetious!!!!

  8. anon says:

Oops, my commentary got cut off…

    Castle’s statement:

“Over the last several months, similar attempts on the part of the Democratic leadership to require an arbitrary date for troop withdrawal have gone nowhere, wasting precious time debating legislation that would be vetoed by the President.”

Didja get that? Congressman Stem Cells is blasting Democrats for “wasting precious time debating legislation that would be vetoed ”

The man has no sense of irony.

  9. anon says:

If I were an editorial cartoonist this is what I’d draw.

Mike Castle standing next to a wrecked car marked “Iraq” while he points up to a broken guardrail.

The caption would read: “If we would only follow the recommendations of the Iraq study group we could avoid this calamity”

  10. jason330 says:

    Lol

I just emailed a freelance illustrator I know to find out how much that would cost.

  11. jason330 says:

    Also,

Thanks for that catch. Conngressman Stem Cells – I missed that irony.

  12. anon says:

WTF??? The “legislation that would be vetoed” language has already been erased from Castle’s statement on his website.

Can he do that? it is written as though he spoke it on the floor of the House: “Mr. Speaker, I rise to…”

The original text has gotta be around somewhere.

That was quick! And it is the first example of Castle’s people responding to DelawareLiberal.

I think this is the beginning of a dialog.

  13. anon says:

OOps, my bad… looks like it’s still there.

  14. Hey. We ARE in the land of the duPonts after all.
Word is that McCain is winding down and out and that his breakfast fundraiser yesterday at the Wilmington Club (?) was to cover his loses and allow him to pay down his debt, sort of like the Clinton campaign bailing out Vilsack with 700K after he threw in the towel.
