Please feel free to keep believing this. I know it seems so in the little microcosm that is this blog, and maybe even in the microcosm that is Delaware (though you may want to stay above the canal just to be sure). But I think you might be surprised just how many “knuckle-draggers” make up the American public. I know you all were giddy in 2006 thinking the Republicans lost because of the war. But that view is a little to narrow. Many Republicans either stayed home, voted independent, or, in some cases, even pulled the D lever NOT because of the war, but because of Bush’s failure domestically to seal the border and curb spending. They chose to send him and the GOP a message in 2006 when it wasn’t as critical.
But when it comes to president, all bets are off! Especially since Bush isn’t running (which all seem to forget.)

But I’m serious about this — when people start asserting what will happen, they either go to the casino and put money where their mouth is or they’re just jerking off. When you make silly predictions about Castle I call you on it; when these little hand jobs come on here and assert Thompson will do this or Giuliani will do that, I call them on it.
It might be different if they were interested in an actual debate or discussion of various candidates’ chances, but they’re not — they just want to talk smack because you posted a couple of photos mocking a guy whose whole candidacy is based on his supposed Hollywood qualities. Yeah, he’s Reagan, all right — except without the principles, qualifications or good looks. Hey, Fred, good luck with that.
As for Giuliani, quoting polls about his appeal is nice, but it’s all based on the fiction that he did something heroic during the 9/11 aftermath. In reality, about all he did was fail to cry. The guy couldn’t even win against Hillary in New York, which is why he didn’t challenge her for the Senate. Cracking down on squeegee men gets you only so far. Republicans have narrowed their choices to an authoritarian and a creepy robot — no wonder they want Fred Thompson, who has not voiced a single interesting idea yet, to save them.
So those are my opinions, and they’re not based on my fealty to the Democrats, because I have none. But you’ll notice I don’t declare who will win, because I don’t know. If I did I’d go place my bets, not wave my dick around on somebody’s comment thread.

It is not my opinion to say that “Reagan” Brand Republicanism of low taxes, balanced budgets, non-interventionists forigen policy and lip service to honor, integrity and personal accoutnability has been trashed.

Jason: Your theory would be stronger if you could identify for me the “quality” Republican candidates who are dodging this race. The fact is that their movement is built on cults of personality. GWB was virtually the only candidate they could find who could have run even with Gore in 2000 — and that was based on name recognition. If his name had been Elmer instead of George, we’d still have a Democratic president today.
Their ideas standing alone are not going to convince a majority to vote for them — check any poll on virtually any issue. On very few are they in the majority. So they need a “strong man” to lead them. Giuliani has that image because of 9/11. Should he win the nomination, he will be in the unenviable position of trying to prevent people from finding out more about him — impossible given his long public record. He polls so highly now because people don’t know more about him and, media aside, really aren’t interested in the 2008 election now. Romney’s problem is how glibly he’s pandering to the right after governing Massachusetts as a moderate. If he wins we’ll all get an education about the Mormon religion, which will creep out some of the people who aren’t yet creeped out by his Plastic Man personality. Hence Thompson.
But seriously — who else do they have? Who’s the otherwise qualified, likable candidate who’s not running because he thinks the Democrats have it sewed up?
Despite the emergence of Rudy’s warts should he get the nomination, he has a lot more on the plus side than 9/11. He straightened out a fiscal and criminal mess in the five boroughs that had existed since Teddy R. left as Chief of Police.
The man was made for running government. He is simply a good business manager. He might have the personality of Leona Helmsley absent some of her softer qualities, but he’s good at running government as a business. This ‘core value’ bullshit espoused on sites like FSP is for people who don’t have any other areas of competence. Rudy is competent. He’s an asshole, and you wouldn’t want to spend a day fishing with him, but he’s competent.

I’ve been reading a lot about the Mormon religion and it is creepy, not that any of them are anything to write home to mom about.

Interesting theory. I never heard that one before, but it does sound Rovian.
I agree, Dana. But I also question that Ridge and Whitman could be labeled “quality candidates.” Both were compromised quite easily, mostly because they were only minimally competent (and not at all charismatic). Powell, of course, would have made a good presidential candidate, but chose not to run. Again, I think his Rovian moment at the UN wasn’t an accident — it was the cautious choice of a cautious man going to his cautious downfall.
Oh, and J — 48 percent of the people saying, 14 months before the election, is not a “fact” that’s worth very much. But you go on believing. Of course, if you check the blog further up, you’ll see the results of people who have put their money where their mouth is. Sixty percent of them have put it on the Democrats. I find that a more significant fact. Of course, you’re welcome to put YOUR money where YOUR mouth is and tilt that back in the GOP’s favor…
Disbelief: Check Gail Collins’ column in the NY Times today if you want to see how competent New Yorkers consider him. You illustrate my point: Most of what people “know” about Rudy has been made up. Once his real record comes to light — and $100M of negative advertising should see to that — he’s toast. Hillary, meanwhile, is going to be hard to slag worse than she’s been slagged already. I can’t stand her — a few months ago I would have been among that 42 percent who says they’ll never vote for her — but if it’s her vs. a Republican, I’ll vote for her.
