GOP Held Hostage: Day 1
It will be interesting to see how this develops, but right now it looks like the Republican’s right-wing Christian fanatics are going to exercise their veto power and strike down Ghouliani’s candidacy.
The flash point? Abortion.
And here I’ve been thinking that it was the Dems that had the craaaaaaazy radical extremists base that was dragging the party into electoral oblivion with it’s radical demands for “health care” and crazy nonsense like “peace.”
“crazy nonsense like “peace.””
More like crazy nonsense like 9/11 was an inside job”.
Yeah, Chris. Nothin’ saner than a bunch of people who demand you follow the advice of their invisible friend, while they seem to have no problem ignoring Casper themselves every time they get trolled in the men’s room.
And to you Dems out there: isn’t the latest attack on Rudy by our version of the Ayatollahs proof he’ll make a good President.
RUDY!!! RUDY!!! RUDY!!!
isn’t the latest attack on Rudy by our version of the Ayatollahs proof he’ll make a good President.
No.
There are a lot of reasons not to vote for Rudy.
I think endorsing the ripping limb from limb of unborn children is the best one not to vote for him. I guess if having a little compassion for the most helpless of society is nutty and extremist, then may God give us more.
Dave and anon, the issue I presented isn’t pro-live vs. pro-choice. Its about those who appoint themselves our moral guardians yet keep nudging my feet in the mens’ room. What is it with you guys? Everytime you get caught ‘cruising’, you immediately scream “Abortion, abortion!!!” Do you think this makes us forget your hypocrisy?
It is straight out of the Rove playbook: Always attack your opponent for what you are doing yourself.
Got a caucus full of closet homosexuals? Scream “Gays are destroying marriage!!”
Hiring Blackwater to shoot up innocent civilians? Scream “Culture of Death!!”
Passing deficits as far as the eye can see? Scream “Big-spending Democrats!!”
Installed in the White House by the Supreme Court? Scream “Activist judges!!”
it never stops.
The Mayor’s position on abortion went as far as to propose public funding for abortions something most Americans oppose not only pro life people. The “absolutists” on abortion will be opposed to him but when his entire record comes out so will many others.
Now in NYC the abortion rate is about 50%, I don’t blame the former Mayor for that fact but I don not see it as a positive statistic.
Mike P., trolling for the uber-conservative vote on this site is about as effective as asking Christine for a Cleveland Steamer.
If you’re voting on just a single issue – such as abortion – you’re doing a disservice to yourself and your country.
But with that said, the religious conservatives out there talk, talk, and TALK about the sanctity of life and aborted fetuses, while their actions (you know – the people they vote for and their policies) result in the complete opposite.
Religious Right (aka: theocrats): Life begins at conception, and it ends at birth! 😉
Here’s something for both sides to think about:
Based on current polling, Giuliani stands a good chance of winning New York against anybody but Hillary.
Disblief,
Re read my comments. I am not trolling but stating the facts on what some people think of Giuliani and his record. Former Pres. Clinton did a pretty good interview on this subject last weekend.
My thoughts on abortion are not based on faith at all but a bit of common sense. We spend a lot of rhetoric talking about education for children and health care for children yet we dismiss unborn children as some sort of incovenience. I think life in the womb is the essence of innocence.
I am not a single issue voter but those that are don’t do a disservice to anyone, they are expressing their values in the voting booth.
Also, does anyone think a 50% abortion rate is a good thing?
Have a great day.
I am not a single issue voter but those that are don’t do a disservice to anyone, they are expressing their values in the voting booth.
No, they are expressing their judgmentalism. When their economic position begins deteriorating and they have to sell the bass boat and cancel that trip to Disney World, because of the economic policies enacted by their pro-life heroes, then we will see their real values come out in the next election.
Mike P., if you could be a bit more pompous and pedantic in expressing yourself and telling me how “we” spend our rhetoric, I might warm up to you a bit.
Yes, Mr. Protack, given the situations those mothers were in or going to be in – it’s probably a good thing.
Jeebus ain’t gonna put food on the table, unless you pimp him, ala Falwell, Robertson, & Dobson….
And where the heck does 50% come from anyway? That figure is largely meaningless without some context, which I suppose is the point of some of these faith-based numbers. And some pimped out faith-based group with a bigger investment in scary rhetoric rather than some basic numeracy is, I am betting, the source of this foolishness.
The creepiness of these authoritarian religious fanatics is that they seem to aspire to be a copy of the Guardian Council. No candidate can be religious until they say so!
And where the heck does 50% come from anyway?
Geez… that’s almost half!
Rudy’s problems can be summed up as the cultural bias of a New Yorker. He appears trying to mend some fences.
The ‘every sperm is wonderful, every sperm is great’ crowd may seek the perfect candidate but quire a few conservative Republicans know that politics is the art of the possible. Look at those who hold their noses and vote for Mike Castle every two years. There does come a time when principles do mean more than catering to special interests.
Given a choice between Rudy and Hillary, there would be an easy decision. Between Hillary and Mercurial McCain and some would think of staying home on election day. Carter assured the Reagan years.
I know the single issue impact in an election. I lost the 2006 senate Primary by a narrow margin because I was deemed “bad for unborn children” by some DRTL folksand a third candidate was better suited to their views. However,
For those who want facts:
Delaware Abortion Facts
Delaware is #1 in the nation in teen abortions (19 and under)
Delaware is #2 in the nation in the rate of abortion (21 per 1,000 women)
Delaware is #1 in the nation in infant mortality rates
More than half of all abortions in Delaware are repeat abortions
42% of abortions in Delaware are performed on black women
Approximately 5,000 abortions are performed each year in Delaware
Approximately 1/3 of all abortions are performed on out-of-state women
* statistics are from the Centers for Disease Control and Alan Guttmacher Institute and reflect the year for which they are most recently available – 2003
For New York:
New York has the highest abortion rate in America. In 2000, the last year for which good data are available, 39 out of every 1,000 women in the state ended a pregnancy, for a total of 164,000 abortions that year. In America, one of every ten abortions occurs in New York, and in New York, seven of every ten abortions are performed in New York City. In absolute terms, there are more abortions performed on minors, more repeat abortions, and more late abortions (over 21 weeks) in New York City than anywhere else in the country. In parts of the city, the ratio of abortions to births is one to one.
In short, New York is the abortion capital of America.

I know the previous post was a long one but I hope it helps clear the air a bit.
Have a great day.
Thank God for women having a choice in the matter.
Which of you gentlemen will step up to the plate and adopt one of those who survived til birth but now has little or no chance of surviving in life????
Stick to talking about prostate problems and leave women’s issues to women…………bug out!
So, in other words, you made up the 50% number.
Your DE abortion facts came from some DE anti-abortion group and those facts, in the main, don’t have a great deal of correlation with the CDC report. I didn’t check the infant mortality report, if there is one. I should know better than to check up on numbers thrown around with no attribution.
But when the GOP ayatollahs are calling the dance….
Oops, my comment was meant for Mike Protack above Anon II.
“Which of you gentlemen will step up to the plate and adopt one of those who survived til birth but now has little or no chance of surviving in life????”
Ok Anon II. Why arbitrarily end a woman’s choice at birth? If a woman truly deserves to decide on whether that child lives or dies, then there is no logical reason to end that choice post-partum. If a child becomes a burden on the mother’s quality of life, then until the child is old enough to legally leave the nest and survive entirely on its own, we should give the mother the option to ending the child’s life. Really, all Andrea Yates was doing was committing 5 late-term abortions on herself.
It is truly the only logical consistency in the pro-choice argument. So why don’t you step up and show a little intellectual honesty.
Why not impose the death penalty on women who have abortions? It is truly the only logical consistency in the pro-life argument.
See? I can play silly semantic games too.
But while I am doing that a 15 year old girl just got pregnant. That 15 year old stands a 66% chance of dropping out of school – the the baby (if it is a girl) is even money to get pregnant herself befor she turns 20.
You see Chris, the real issue is reducing unwanted pregnecies. That is the root of the whole issue, but craaaazy-ass right wingers are not interested in problem solving or they would not be pushing for “just say no” sex ed.
Your winger fellow travelers are more interested in beating the abortion drum as a fundraising tactic than they are reducing the number of abortions in the country.
Sad when you think about it. What a waste of energy,
Casandra,
Below is the attribution and the numbers are very accurate for NYC
2003 NY State live Births 253,011
2003 NY State abortions 119,469
2003 NYC live births 119,685
2003 NYC abortions 84,903
http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/vital_statistics/2003/toc.htm
http://nymag.com/nymetro/news/features/15 has the facts on New York City abortion trends.
Delaware 2003 4178 Total aborts
3123 total in state
11337 live births
The pro life population is by no means isolated to the GOP but is pretty evenly split D/R with fewer independents.
I love the Right’s response to teenage, unwed mothers: “Just say no”. Its like war in Iraq, or even pending war in Iran; just doesn’t work, its the most asshole idea anyone could think of, they’ll stick to it no matter how bad it is, yada, yada, yada. What a bunch of putz’s.
As Margaret Johnston and Claire Keyes write: “As abortion providers, (we)… view abortion as a transformational experience…
Any time one of the GOP Ayatollahs (i.e., ‘Prince’ Lil’ Johnny Still) declaims against women’s rights, I look at how many they have adopted. None so far. Put your mouth where your money is, hypocrits.
“Put your mouth where your money is, hypocrits.”
Not until you stop saying “Kids are going to have sex anyway, so lets just hack up the little babies as they come!”
“That is the root of the whole issue, but craaaazy-ass right wingers are not interested in problem solving or they would not be pushing for “just say no” sex ed.”
Silly us. I guess they best way is to teach the 1st graders how to get it on….as long as they use a rubber. Please! Listen to yourselves. The solution probably lies in the middle but in the meantime innocent children are being ripped apart, and the left cheers that practice as “progessive”. Progress for whom? Certainly not the children. You dress up you arguments as saying its men’s way of controlling women. So I guess all the women that are pro-life are just poor slobs that want to be controlled by men. Drop the act…educate me. Why do you REALLY think that murdering babies is ok?
My brother and I have helped take in children not ours. He has adopted. I have not; it was not where we we felt God’s guidance. I did not think it would have been able to work out and pay the attention due in a situation where I was a step father and adding our children. We did shorter term guardianship. I do have pro-life friends who did not have children who adopted. They don’t advertise that. I guess that is why you assume it doesn’t happen.
The fact is that many people are waiting in line to adopt. There is no shortage of parents for infants. I don’t think people need to do it to make some point.
You miss one central point. People should take responsibility for their own family. If they can’t then they should look at other options which benefit members of that family. Ripping a child limb from limb never qualifies. It is cold blooded murder. It is anathema to all clear thinking people.
Mike and Chris are right.
Silly us. I guess they best way is to teach the 1st graders how to get it on….as long as they use a rubber. Please! Listen to yourselves.
Case closed. You have nothing. Some straw men arguments and cartoon versions of what you think “the left” is all about.
The good news is that you childlike view of the world is on the way out.
“Case closed. You have nothing. Some straw men arguments and cartoon versions of what you think “the left” is all about.”
I agree with you. The problem is, the more I hang out here, the more I see how much WORSE the left is than my cartoon version. I at least attributed some sanity to the left prior to hanging out here….
“The good news is that you childlike view of the world is on the way out.”
Childlike? No. On the way out? You just may be in for a shock. But we shall see.
