NY Times blowing some Dogfish Head

Filed in National by on January 10, 2008

I don’t know how much it costs to brew beer these days but I can say paying $8 for a FOUR pack, a FREAKING four pack of beer is insane.  Whatever happened to a six pack?

I think Dogfish Head is overpriced myself, for being brewed right down the street, but they get some mad props from the NY Times. So next time someone asks what they can bring to your party, request the beer, just don’t buy it yourself.

Our favorite was the robust 90 Minute Imperial I.P.A. from Dogfish Head, a beer that balances its exaggerated caramel and chocolate sweetness with a bracing bitterness derived from hops. If you sneer at the 90 Minute, Dogfish also occasionally issues its 120 Minute I.P.A., which, at 20 percent alcohol, may well be, as the brewery contends, “the biggest I.P.A. ever brewed.”

A 4-pack of 90 minute is certainly enough to keep you warm on a cold winter’s day.

    Ain’t that right DV? 😉

  2. donviti says:

I can attest to that yes….

  3. David says:

donviti, no one expects you to pay $8 for a 4 pack; considering you usually pay $13.99 for a 30-pack of Busch beer.

  4. donviti says:

$17.95 for a 30 pack of Miller Lite cans beyotch!

  5. David says:

and what are you writing about bottled-beer for? maybe if it came in 40-oz you might have some experience, but a 12-oz bottle — who are you trying to kid?

  6. meatball says:

Generally speaking the higher the ETOH content the more expensive the brew. 90 minute IPA comes in at almost 9%, Busch around 4.5%.
Plus, currently we are in a world wide hops shortage so naturally a beer that uses a lot of hops will cost more to produce. And then economies of scale, etc.

Besides, it tastes much better. Beer begins at 1.060, baby.

Bud released a quality brew for the season called Winter’s Bourbon Cask Ale for about $7.50/6. A pretty decent brew indeed if you can find it. Malty up front with a smokey vanilla finish sometimes I can taste green olives I think. 6%ABV.

  8. David says:

Dang, all this talk about fancy beer makes me think that this is a Republican blog.

  9. Whoever YOU want it to be says:

    Beer $8.00/6
    Smokes $5.00/pac
    Gas $3.00/gal
    Oil $2.00/gal (heating)

Despite the cost of living it’s still popular…….

Hint of vanilla with a smokey finish? I’ve often looked with doubt on these ‘taster’ people who can claim these subtle sensations in their alcohol. “A pasty ride of limed eel with a hint of peppered peanut butter coating the anterior palate.” Right. In my experience its usually, “I just stopped by for a couple, I can’t remember about four hours, now my head hurts like shit, who’s that using my bathroom?”

  11. Al Mascitti says:

In that case, Dis, stay away from the Golden Monkey. It’s more than 11% alcohol. There’s a bar in Philly that claims on its beer list it will not serve more than 2 pint drafts of it to anyone.

  12. JohnnyX says:

Golden Monkey is great stuff. At Stewart’s in Bear around this time of year they brew one called the “Stumbling Monk.” Let’s just say it is aptly named (for the record, they will only serve you 3).
