Country Music Pandering

Filed in National by on January 24, 2008

Seems like every country song I hear these days is about how great and pure hearted coutry music fans are.

Is it me?

Couldn’t tell you. If I hear one note that sounds like it has any twang… I’m out! Never get to the lyrics.

  2. Steve Newton says:

    Yeah, Jason, it’s you.

  3. nemski says:

You need to go to the underbelly of country music — the guys working daytime jobs and playing at night, that is the sound of country music. I might even know a site or two for you to check out. 😉

But, if you are talking CMT or WDSD, I can’t help you man. I listen to XM – Cross Country when I’m not trolling the bowells of myspace looking for new bands.

  4. cassandra m says:

What the heck are you doing listening to country music?

that’s code for trolling for kidde porn jason, don’t buy that new bands crap

    Does “I’m From Delaware” count?

I used to spend a lot of time in Virginia, building my grandfather’s house with him, and we listened to some radio station called “Big Country”… there were basically 20 songs they ever played, which were either about:

A little girl in love with a little boy
A little boy in love with a little girl
How awesome America (namely the War on Terror) is
Sex, drinking, or ogling women (this is the Bible Belt, mind you)
    Jesus
A lack of anything by The Dixie Chicks

Granted, this was three or four years ago. I imagine some things have changed.

  7. Von Cracker says:

Some alt-country is good, such as Band of Horses. Alt-bluegrass is fun too – Leftover Salmon.

I like rock with a country twang…. camper van beethoven and cracker (same lead singer/writer), to name a couple.

    Johnny Cash is good too….

    Matt –

That “USA KICKS ASS!!” sub genre has cooled off. The big practioners have switched over to the “Sex, drinking, or ogling women” sub-genre in order to prove their manliness.

The big growth sub-genre now is “country music fans are good pure-hearted folk.”

  9. Von Cracker says:

    Toby Keith is a pansy!

He’s no longer mad at the Dixie Chicks…wonder why?

  10. Rebecca says:

Jason, I’m too busy listening to opera to catch any country music. The last time I listened the theme was along the lines of “does your foot get caught in the rear-view mirror at the drive-in?” But there were still drive-ins in those days so it’s been a while.

  11. jason330 says:

    D’oh! Opera!

Slowly I turned, step by step…inch by inch…

I’m not even American, but I do love country music. Well parts of it at least. Listen to the Hillbilly Shakespeare aka Hank Williams. Great lyrics that can directly be compared to Nirvana of the 90’s. His angst lyrics protrude and made him an icon. After Garth ruined country music in the early 90’s country music became a general form of blah-blah, like any other commercial music genre. But there are still indie bands around and nemski had a pretty good point. Search and you will find.
