Harris McDowell’s Ethics Crisis Deepens

Filed in National by on March 6, 2008

Read Nancy’s rough transcript from today’s Mascitti show.

Karen Peterson: McDowell told her that he has got it on record, now, that there was manipulation of the process by the PSC. Karen asked him how it was different from what the senate was doing now? There is an indication that McDowell intends to show that the PSC were bad actors here

McDowell is clearly working for Delmarva. If he is being called out so matter of factly by his fellow Democratic Senator – I don’t see anything to keep McDowell’s actions from being investigated by an ethics committee.

I have email Dave Burris to see if he would be willing to join me in some kind of petition or letter writing campaign to urge a bi-partisan ethics investigation into malfeasance and abuse of public office by McDowell and Copeland.

No word so far from Burris.

  1. PI says:

From Nancy’s transcript: “To the question of why so much time was turned over to these people, Alan Muller remarked that Willett Kempton was denied the chance to testify at all. McDowell said that an extra hearing may be set for next week and that Professor Kempton could have five minutes then. ”

Actually, it was Sen Peterson who revealed that Kempton was denied an opportunity to address the committee. Harris did relent and say he may hold an additional hearing and give Kempton 5 minutes…….

    Generous, so generous.

  2. PI says:

What I find interesting is that Harris, the nationally recognized expert on energy, had to hire anyone to come in and ask the questions.

I also understand that a woman testified later in the session and was not recognized as a qualified expert in the field of energy. I suppose her ties to Enron weren’t disclosed either…….

  3. jason330 says:

Based on what little we know about Speck , I’m fairly sure he has deep Enron connections.

Also – the 5 minutes for Kempton.. Holy crap. Just wheh you think McDowell could not be any more brazen, he ups the ante.

  4. Arthur Downs says:

Wind power and ethanol as a fuel are trendy but of questionable merit. Kids go for the trendy but the sustainability of enthusuasm is limited, as witness the Obama Bubble that seems to be leaking a bit.

A practical energy source must be both reliable and cost effective. Wind power hustlers seem to want to shove the risks off to utilities, entities that always transfer costs to the ratepayers.

Ethanol will burn, but with a lower specific energy content than gasoline. Pure ethanol fuel would provide a problem with meeting arbitrarily imposed CAFE standards. Converting corn to fuel rathher than food means higher food prices given the law of supply and demand. Ethanol is also hygroscopic and will cause damage to parts of automobiles as a result of absorbed water.

Naturally, enthusiastic partisans who are better at chanting slogans will go for the trendy.

  5. PI, thanks for the corrections. No doubt there are a few more warranted for some of the details but the gist is solid.

    Art –

We need to reduce carbon emmisions by 80% in 20 years. 1 million wind turbines will get us part of the way there.

Don’t be a sap. At least McDowell and speck are getting paid to be moronic.

  7. jason330 says:

All in all, great blogging Nancy. Thanks for posting that.

  8. Al Mascitti says:

Thank you, Jason, Nancy and all who are commenting for keeping the spotlight on this. I will try to get the actual podcast up after tomorrow’s show; I apologize, I had a dentist appointment today and couldn’t get it edited and posted.

With 5 minutes left in the show, a Senate aide called and said McDowell wanted to “clear the air” about the hiring of the attorney. I told him it was impossible today; he’s supposed to call back to set a time, hopefully for Monday, when McDowell himself will appear. When I find out the day and time I will let Jason know.

  9. Maria Evans says:

I left Sentor McDowell a note last night asking how much Speck was costing and who was paying for him, I have yet to receive a call back with any answers.

  10. jason330 says:

I’m eager to get your take on this Maria. When is WGMD going to post soemthing?

  11. RSmitty says:

Wait…a Senate aide called with five minutes left? I can see the excuses now: “We tried to get on, but Al refused us the opportunity. Not our fault! We tried! Maybe you can reach him at his Middletow–* I mean his WILMINGTON home, yeah, that’s it.”

Sorry, but pessimism reigns with me over this guy.

  12. Maria Evans says:

Jason, as soon as I get out of the fetal position and stop crying over how horrifying our state government is, I’ll post something.

  13. liz allen says:

McDowell doesn’t answer email! Talk to his neighbors on Baynard Blvd…ask them how often he comes to pick up his “mail”?

The guy should be impeached or taken before the ethics committee based on the fact, he doesn’t live in Wilmington, is not representing his consitutents, is a fake and a charlatan.

Having a residence in two places doesn’t carry weight, it is which residence do you sleep, do you spend a majority of your time…it ain’t Wilmington folks!

  14. jason330 says:

Maria – LOL. It might be a while.

  15. G Rex says:

This was posted anonymously on Dana’s blog earlier:

“According to Delaware State News reporter Drew Volturo, Mr.Speck’s $35,000 capped salary is paid for out of Leadership funds.”

What are these leadership funds? Simple operating expenses or what? I didn’t get an answer when I asked over at DelWatch.

  16. Sukon It says:

    Hahahahaha!!!!

I love watching you foam at the mouth.

I get an extra $10 if I get you to go cross-eyed and involuntarily poop.

  18. disbelief says:

G, a simple and true answer to your question is that it was our money.

  19. David says:

Sorry to get off topic, but I couldn’t find another method. March 19 marks the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War. Can anyone tell me if there are any protests/vigils planned. If not, we need to have one, on the mall preferably.

  20. liz allen says:

Leadership funds…is that the same as “Street Funds”…there walking around money!

David: check with Pacem en Terris, am sure they will have one…can we believe we are still there and its worse than ever, regardless of what the talking heads say!

  21. john kowalko says:

    Maria,
    have you posted the interview?

  22. Rebecca says:

David – Pacem In Terris has two Peace demonstrations planned:

Wednesday, March 19 – noon to 1:00 at Rodney Square

Saturday, March 22 – 11:00 to noon on Concord Pike by the Macaroni Grill.

  23. Dana Garrett says:
