Angela Walker Should Primary Tom Carper

Filed in National by on April 12, 2008

I like Walker’s candor and Carper is by far the most Republicanish Democrat* in the Senate. (I asked a staffer once if Carper felt like he was on the Dem team and the staffer paused a long time befor saying “yes.” Very convincing!) He is truly a low-life who has zero regard for his constituents that are not banks. He has never had to work for re-election and that isn’t helping.

This is a nice change of pace:

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tom Carper drew fire Tuesday from housing reform advocates and Delaware Technical & Community College students opposed to his vote last week to kill a provision they say could help 600,000 families facing foreclosure save their homes.

The amendment to the Foreclosure Prevention Act now being debated in Congress would have allowed bankruptcy judges to modify mortgage terms of primary residences as they do with vacation homes and other major purchases.

Carper, D-Del., voted Thursday with 57 other senators to kill or table the amendment, while Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., was among the 36 who voted against tabling it.

Carper “sided with Wall Street and the big banks, yet again,” said Angela Walker, president of the Delaware chapter of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN.

About a dozen ACORN members and DelTech students protested his vote at his Wilmington office. ACORN is one of the nation’s largest community organization of low- and moderate-income families.

“Endless words of concern don’t pay the mortgage,” Walker said in a statement. “We need leadership to fight foreclosures, and we are not getting it from Tom Carper.”

Carper would probably win the primary, but the experience of being called out for his Republican ways during a primary would be good for him and the country.

*Note: Joe Lieberman is the worst Senator from a blue state, but he is not a Democrat.

Agreed, a primary might at least push him leftwards a bit.

  2. liz allen says:

why couldnt he be forced out…he is and always has been more republican than democrat..we need John Flagherty to oppose him….he could win. Time for Delaware to start calling this joker out…he has had a free pass for too long.

Is this statement to be taken as literal political analysis? Because if it is, it couldn’t be more wrong. No personal disrespect intended, but can you seriously believe that someone unknown to 98% of the public can mount an as-yet-unfinanced Senate campaign against a two-term incumbent — four years from now? Never mind, don’t answer — maybe you do. I see no evidence for it, and no precedent for it in recent (last 40 years) Delaware history.

Instead of worrying about who Carper’s progressive Dem primary challenger will be in 2012, you should start laying the groundwork for such a challenge — you know, raising some money, putting together an organization of people who could hit the streets for progressive candidates — the nuts and bolts of politics that too many blog dwellers shun for discussion of the issues. Let’s put it this way: Barack Obama inspires a lot of people with his speeches, but what’s winning him the nomination is his on-the-ground organizing. You don’t even have someone to make the charismatic speeches yet; the part you CAN get to work on is the organizing.

    Stop making me love you!

Al – that is the only kind of person who CAN mount a challenge to Carper, or to Castle for that matter. Because all the name-brand people have failed to step up.

There is such an organization : Progressive Democrats for Delaware. You just described us.

    J. 2 things:

Does Angela Walker live in DE? Also, remember that ACORN colluded w/McDowell & others to hike utility rates last year.

Do you have an archive on Rep. Castle….if so how do I access it?

  8. Dana Garrett says:

I asked John if I could get him to announce he would primary Carper if Carper voted for Hillary at the convention. He said no. He wants to be an advocate, not a politician.

  9. liz allen says:

Too bad John wants to be an advocate…because I always believed a good advocate for the people is what a politican should be. John already has the name recognition statewide.

Progressive Democrats…June you are kidding right. I know of one progressive idea that your group tried and continues to try and destroy but its bigger than your little group of 10.

  10. Al Mascitti says:

“John already has the name recognition statewide.”

    No, he doesn’t.

  11. jason330 says:

    Fuck that Liz.

PDD has done more to make Delaware more progressive in 10 months than ten years of your crazy ass belly aching.

If you want to talk shit about PDD you’ve come to the wrong blog.

    To answer my own question:

Ms. Angela Walker lives in the city of Wilmington. Nothing changes on the ‘sell out’ on energy costs.
