Claim That Wind Power is Dead Creates Controversy

Filed in National by on April 16, 2008

As the result of Pat Gearity doing some digging and with the help of some excellent blogging by Dana Garrett here – Dave Burris throw away claim that….

“A week ago, one prominent Delawarean told me that the project was dead, the deal had been cut, that all of the players, including Senate leadership and the Governor candidates, were involved. It was over. DP&L was one of the good old boys and BWW was not and that was it.”

Is getting some well deserved scrutiny.

My question to Dave is “Who is that prominent Delawarean?”

My guess is that it is Charlie Copeland. Copeland has been trying to play both sides of the street on this for a while and he was the first State Senator to go public with McDowell’s “leaked” report which he claimed to be a deal breaker. Clearly Copeland is on the Pepco team. However, he might have just overplayed his hand judgeing from the heated reaction that his claim has generated.

  1. I was at a Red Clay Union legislator’s meeting on Monday and Copeland showed up because he’s in the district. Immediately a bunch of teachers swarmed around him to ask about the wind issue. They were concerned that like Harris McDowell, he was stalling and proferring BS after BS. However, like the smooth player he is, he began spinning and spinning to make them hear what they wanted to hear.

    I suppose it’s typical.

I think this controversy is a great thing, actually.

J – I tried to call your cell, but went straight to voicemail. Look at your email (work). There is an assignment for you waiting there.

    Roger. Agent 10W-40 out!

  4. Randy Nelson says:

First, let me say I found this extraordinarily disappointing. Four state bloggers, two democrats and two republicans, found common ground in their support for the wind farm. Many arguments were made in support of the project and yet the issue is being sidetracked into personal mud-slinging. What a shame. I was with Dave Burris when the prominent Delawarian told us the wind project was dead and that it had been killed at the highest levels of state government. I might add this is not the first time I have heard this and if you have followed the story, you know enormous pressure is being applied by Delmarva Power. More to the point, I know some will find it absolutely SHOCKING that a back-room deal was cut in Delaware, but his account of what we were told is 100% accurate. And just for the record, you are mistaken, it was not Senator Copeland.

  5. FSP says:

I gotta admit, I’m feeling pretty good right about now. Corroborating witnesses will do that to a guy.

    Have a beautiful day.

  6. RSmitty says:

Wait for it, Dave. I’m counting on Garrett to heap his scorn upon you in 1…2…3…

    More of this please:

I was at a Red Clay Union legislator’s meeting on Monday and Copeland showed up because he’s in the district. Immediately a bunch of teachers swarmed around him to ask about the wind issue.

    Randy,

So a prominent Delawarian (not named Copeland) told you the wind project was dead and that it had been killed at the highest levels of state government.

Which means that either JAck Markell and John Carney are lying OR your prominent Delawarian (not named Copeland) is trying to spread some DP&L public relations.

  8. Dana Garrett says:

“I was with Dave Burris when the prominent Delawarian told us the wind project was dead and that it had been killed at the highest levels of state government.”

A statement that while completely true (the prominent Delawarean exists) is totally irrelevant to the point I made. Prominent Delawareans don’t get things wrong, don’t deceive?

Burris didn’t need to take an extra steps to verify the story w/ an issue that the public DEEPLY CARES ABOUT? He didn’t have an obligation to at least ASK the gubernatorial candidates for a comment?

So Burris gets info from a real source and then gets the bright idea to use it for partisan and vengeful (Protack) purposes? That isn’t a distinct possibility? You mean that sort of thing doesn’t happen often in politics?

PLEASE…the existence of the “prominent Delawarean” was never an essential element to my point.

Is that it? Is there anything more to offer for us to believe the theory that Markell, Carney and Protack were part of a grand conspiracy?

  9. FSP says:

First of all, I said “governor candidates.” So you can toss Protack out of the equation.

Secondly, almost feel sorry for you. You really thought you had me. And now you’re reduced to clinging to arguments of journalistic ethics.

You’re really better off hiding under a rock for a few days to escape the laughter.

There’s a reason I didn’t title the post “Wind Project Dead; Killed at Highest Levels” and a reason I followed the anecdote with the un-confusable “That is bull****.”

    You’re toast, Garrett.

  10. liz allen says:

Hey, and what about Karen Peterson! this is an absoloute outrage. This AM on C-span they were spotlighting Pittsburgh (my hometown), and took a city that was the worst in the nation, with rives running orange from iron…in the 50’s to bass tournaments. PA is one of the largest producers of solar panels and wind! They have created thousands of jobs, growing the bio economy, putting people to work, and maintaining a green future. What the hell is wrong here in Delaware, has DPL filled the pockets of certain legislators? We the citizens need to know “who that prominent Delawarean was”..why the secrecy…if you were at the meetings have the guts to state who was there up front. Keeping their secrets is keeping us from getting the truth to fight back.

  11. donviti says:

    prominent delawarean?

Is that code for ELITE? How pathetic. As if there is royalty in this state.

OOHOOOO look at me I’m prominant. (Picture politician in court clothing, dancing about with a bill in his hand) lalalalalal Prominant.

    You people are so pathetic.

A prominant delawarian could be freaking any Italian Builder or Construction person.

  12. Dana Garrett says:

No, Dave, sorry to burst your bubble. You haven’t been vindicated by the fact someone told you potentially scandalous information you didn’t vet about individuals running for Governor.

Notice how you continue to deceive by using selective quotation:

“a reason I followed the anecdote with the un-confusable “That is bull****.”

Just quoting that much information suggests that you doubted the veracity of your prominent Delawarean’s claim.

But here is what you really said on your blog:

“I say that’s bullshit. I have two kids that have to breathe in Eastern Sussex County for the next 80 years, God willing. It’s only dead if YOU let it die. If you refuse to allow the “Delaware Way” to bury our energy future….”

Your COMPLETE statement shows that you DID NOT doubt that the candidates were part of a conspiracy but that the effort to reverse the done deal was still worthwhile.

That’s the thing about you, Dave. You just keep spinning & spinning trying distract readers from the FACTS. That’s why you hearing from a “prominent Delawarean” is meaningless. In my view, one of the ways you deceive is how you USE information.

Unless something has changed, I’ve heard that your little stunt will get more coverage and not by me. I don’t think it’s going to go well for you. But we’ll see.

  13. FSP says:

I’m so happy right now that I’m going to let you have the last word.

    Have a wonderful, beautiful day!

  14. liz allen says:

On second thought…the lady from Pittsburgh was also speaking about how the Bush regime has attempted to turn back every good environmental policy, and the state has to sue them. Is the Bush regime doing the same tactics here in Delaware….using his lapdog Castle, and the other very willing blue dog demorat Carper to end wind power? Pa is actually manufacturing wind mills (which needs steel and you all know that it was Karen Hartley-Nagles idea to “try and get Chrysler and reformat it for turbine manufacturing.

    I smell a bunch of rats….

  15. donviti says:

funny how daves zeal to act like he knows something we all don’t has gotten his ass into trouble.

    neaner, neaner, neaner, neaner…

    grrrrrr

  16. Dana Garrett says:

    “neaner, neaner, neaner, neaner…”

I had forgotten about that expression! I’m going to have to use it in the future.

  17. It’s laughable that Dana Garrett accuses Burris of outrageousness on the same blog where his next post accuses the Governor of lying and suggesting she should be impeached for complimenting Sen. Adams at an awards ceremony.

Did you call the Governor for comment, Mr. Garrett? What did she say?

Dude, stop trying to tear people down and go back to what you used to do before you started attacking Adams, Burris, Fulcher and myself. You may even earn back some of the respect you lost.

  18. RSmitty says:

Randy Nelson: Welcome to what is NCC0-based blogging. Good luck shouting at the wall.

  19. Dana Garrett says:

“It’s laughable that Dana Garrett accuses Burris of outrageousness on the same blog where his next post accuses the Governor of lying and suggesting she should be impeached for complimenting Sen. Adams at an awards ceremony.”

LOL! A post obviously using the literary device of hyperbole is comparable to a post suggesting, through a “prominet Delawarean,” the candidates running for governor are part of a grand conspiracy to favor the biggest utility company operating in Delaware?

LOL. You really are reaching now.

  20. Randy Nelson says:

RSmitty, I was thinking the same thing. That’s funny.

  21. RSmitty says:

Randy (what a great first name, by the way 🙂 ), I’ve been here (NCCo) for my whole life, the last few in the indentity-crisis zone between the C&D canal and the border of Kent Co (do we identify with NCC0, KentCo, or our own world). Shouting at the figurative wall is not necessarily an exercise of futility, but definitely one of endurance. Again, good luck to you.

  22. The Wall says:

    Blah blah blah….

Rsmitty does not shout at the wall so much as he makes clever and cryptic insider jokes about the wall.

  23. donviti says:

Randy reminds me of that fat, unshaven, blob on, “My Name is Earl”

    great name is right!

  24. RSmitty says:

DV – it’s reverse-psychology…hiding the sheer hotness that will ultimately make you cower.

Wall – Insider? Never called that before. Thanks!

  25. Celia Cohen reports that Joe Farley was the master of ceremonies at a dinner honoring Thurman Adams last night.

  26. Delmarva Power lobbyist Joe Farley.

  27. When I read this post earlier, I went over to DE Watch and posted the 17th post. It was good comment and since Garrett can’t work an IP block, he only later removed this post with comments:

That is what you said 1st above. By itself, AS YOU KNOW, that sounds like the statement was a matter of fact, not sourced to anyone.

    *

er, kind of like how I sourced to someone my comments about Bullock?

At least the WNJ removed your comment about me yesterday, acknowledging that you are making unfoundable charges and personal attacks at will.

Tom Noyes said it best here, as usual. Why shove this down Burris’ throat if it was something that he heard, reported and had no cause not to believe? What else would your expect any of them to admit to? What have any of these DEMs done in statements that have challenged the status quo in Dover, really that is what we are talking about. Even the House vote might be a sham knowing that their support will most likely be countered by the Senate powerhouses.

Most telling in all of this is Karen Peterson’s hedging her bets and looking like she is caving to the ‘oinevitable, just when we need her to put herself on the line. I expect her to leak the caucus or something fantastically brave and ethically toward, if impractical and not gonna happen.

    Garrett’s 17th comment

  28. I could go on about how Dana erased the post above but he left a comment that impugned that my post that he erased contained bigoted commentary.
What a saint. It is so comforting to see how a few DE Liberals are encouraging this terribly unproductive partisan attack meme he is fostering, much less what he is trying to do to me.
We are going to have to stand together to fight the clusterfuck in Dover that starts with Farley and runs through the Big Heads and RuthAnn’s posse and ends in the Senate leadership chambers.

Attack the whole not the pieces. Try to build strength in numbers here, people. Garrett is stark raving ego-stricken and is no good to anyone as long as he depends on union shilling to pay his bills.

  29. R Smitty says:

Welcome to hell, Nancy. This, the same guy who distracts from the work of Jason, Maria, Tom, and Dave as a whole by focusing on Dave not phoning his boy, John or Jack on a lead; yet, he can’t research the state flags and discover his attempted racist-bent on the papal visit with the Prez was itself flawed for his own lack of research. (It was the state flag of Mississippi!)

It’s all about personal-gain motive there, Nancy. Afterall, I am “Lickspittle,” for defending a friend.
    “lickspittle – h/t Garrett

  30. Well, Jason is lickspittling Dana’s ass lately.
So no post that Dares Point Out Dana Is An Idiot.

  31. Dana Garrett says:

Nancy, I removed your comments at my blog because I told you I don’t want you to post there any more. As I said, minorities get enough contempt in the US for you to use my blogspace to continue the tradition.

I don’t know if this was meant for me or not:

“At least the WNJ removed your comment about me yesterday, acknowledging that you are making unfoundable charges and personal attacks at will.”

If it was, I have no idea what you are talking about.

  32. Dana Garrett says:

Randy Smith (aka Dave Burris’ Boot-licker)

RE: “Welcome to hell, Nancy. (It was the state flag of Mississippi!)”

    Bootlicker,

Here is my entire post: “Can someone tell me why there is a confederate flag flying at the White House behind the Pope?”

    http://delawarewatch.blogspot.com/2008/04/can-someone-tell-me.html

It was a question. The title of the post was a question to some reader to inform me. For you to compare my honest question w/ Red-baiting Dave Burris’ scurrilous unsubstantiated implication about 2 of the candidates running to be the most power elected executive in our state only reveals how you, Randy Smith, are willing to distort facts in your role as the lickspittle of Red-baiting Dave Burris.

  33. R Smitty says:

Sorry, Dana. I missed this reply. You mentioned my whole name…oooo, spooky. I’m shaking in my boots. No, wait, I lick boots…with my lickspittle?

What’s next? Didya know my full first name is Randall? Oooo…

Again, as I close many threads with you (because you stop responding after this point), what I do is called sticking up for friends. When I believe a friend is being wronged, it’s what I do. I would much sooner do it for a friend than a politician I know nothing about personally (and vice-versa) any day.
