Markell Calls Out Carney On Wind Power (& Leadership)

Filed in National by on April 24, 2008

Jack Markell killed two birds with one stone at the environmental debate on Tuesday. He put John Carney in a very tough spot and advanced the cause of off shore wind power for Delaware by making a simple observation.

Here is the deal, when wind power came up Markell explained the special influence the Lt Gov has over the state senate (as it’s part of the job, presiding over it) and Carney accepted the challenge to get the senators on board. That is great news.

The NJ’s Beth Miller gave the exchange short shrift, but think about it, Markell totally owned Carney.

If Carney does get the three votes in the Senate that we need to pass HCR 38 then big deal he is only doing his job AND he might not have done it unless Markell forced his hand. Conversely, if Carney fails to get the Senate to pass HCR 38 this session, then Carney’s whole rationale for being Governor (that he can work with people to get things done) dissipates into a mist.

I’m a big Markell guy, but if Carney is able to pry loose enough votes to pass HCR 38, it IS a big deal, and he will deserve mucho props for doing it. I, for one, am rooting for him.

  2. cassandra_m says:

It is odd, don’t you think, that Carney has been little seen on this issue? You’d think that this is a made-for-getting-elected issue, to at least have a high profile accomplishment showing how he might do as Gov. It is a big deal and I hope he does it, but I wonder if it just wouldn’t look abit cynical at this point.

  3. Dana Garrett says:

“If Carney does get the three votes in the Senate that we need to pass HCR 38 then big deal he is only doing his job AND he might not have done it unless Markell forced his hand. If that is Markell’s strategy, then he has committed a fallacy. It’s fallacious to make a claim for evidence (in this case a challenge) where no amount evidence can be presented to demonstrate one has met the conditions of the claim and the only evidence that counts is that one has not met conditions of the claim.

If that really is Markell’s point, then I fear he’s not thinker I imagined him to be.

Hopefully, your interpretation of Markell is wrong.

(I heard that a poll indicates Carney is almost 20 points ahead of Markell **at this point**. BUT I haven’t seen the poll, so I’m just gossiping. So to the usual nasty gnats that hover around my backside looking for me to slip up, I did not say it was true. It’s just idle gossip. Got it?)

  4. garret calls Carney up by 20!

  5. Anon says:

Maybe I missed something…when did the Carney camp put Dana Garrett on payroll?

  6. jason330 says:

To my mind the challenge creates the possibility for a good outcome or a great outcome.

    The good outcome:
Carney’s claims that his insider status will get things done gets tested.

    The great outcome:
The deal done and we get wind power.

  7. Fonzy says:

“Maybe I missed something…when did the Carney camp put Dana Garrett on payroll?”

Long after Markell put Jason on his.

I was at the debate and I heard exactly what Jack said — he aligned himself with Mike Protack and said:

“Mike and I can’t do it, John, you are the President of the Senate. Only you can do it.”

The audio of the debate should be up on the DNS site real soon and you can judge for your self if this quote is accurate.

I think the Markell camp is getting nervous that Carney is actually going to pull this off, and they are trying to steer the debate in a way that is favorable to them.

To do this they have to turn to their good little soldiers in the blogosphere like Jason to do their work for them.

Bravo, Mr. Scott, Bravo. (Sound of long, slow facetious clapping in the background.)

  8. Jason330 says:

    Fonzy,

Do I mind that Carney has taken on Wind Power as a must win litmus test? Hell no.

That is a win/win for Delaware as I see it.

  9. anon says:

Good question for Dana. Are you or have you ever tried to get on John Carney’s payroll?

  10. Jason330 says:

PS. I can’t get over that fact that the hottest blogger voting is so close.

DV appeals to the bitter gun owners like myself.

  11. Jason330 says:

anon – that seems like a dumb question. Sorry, but this isn’t about Dana or me.

It is about Carney and whether he is mostly steak or sizzle.

  12. Fonzy says:

“Do I mind that Carney has taken on Wind Power as a must win litmus test? Hell no. That is a win/win for Delaware as I see it.”

If you really believe that, then your post is poorly named, and poorly written.

What did Jack Markell have to do with Carney getting Babcock and Brown to commit to locate all the wind install jobs here in DE? What did he have to do with Carney getting them to commit to a partnership with Del Tech? Absolutely nothing.

I know that you want Markell to win, but at least don’t sacrifice what ever small amount of dignity they issue you bloggers when your site gets set up.

  13. jason330 says:

You have to prove that you have a shocking deficit of dignity to get a blog site set up – so that’s how much you know.

As for my comment conflicting with the original post, I keep trying to bring my point down to lower and lower shelves so you can grasp it.

Now it is 100% dumbed down.

  14. Anon says:

Encouraging the Senate to do something that has 90% support from the citizens isn’t really that big a feat. Success here just means that Dover isn’t as corrupt as we thought.

our elected representatives actually representing us…what a concept

  15. Fonzy says:

“I think the Markell camp is getting nervous that Carney is actually going to pull this off, and they are trying to steer the debate in a way that is favorable to them.”

I stand by what I said before. Although I suppose this means that Markell no longer wants the wind deal dead so he can blame Carney.

At least he has accepted that it will happen, despite his total lack of doing any real work on this issue. No if he can spin it just so…

  16. Anonomous says:

It is quite possible that the Senate Dems will approve the wind project in hopes of helping John Carney.

I for one am very glad that it was pushed out by Jack Markell at the debate. It shows how helpful a serious democratic primary is at promoting issued that are good for the citizens. The primary is pushing these issue to the forefront with the needed tension that adds pressure for constructive action.

I personally think we need to thank Markell for being a maverick and bucking the system. No matter what happens, Delawarean’s will win from the healthy tension this primary creates.

We will all be winners this year. And may get wind as well.

And I want to thank John Carney for now feeling the pressure, and putting himself in a position to have to fight for bluewater wind to maintain any credibility. Despite him being a “Johnny come lately” on the wind issue.

If we get Offshore wind, I think we have to be thankful for the primary process that is keeping it so prominent. Markell gets extra kudos for his bold leadership to challenge the status quo, and ensuring that Bluewater wind and many other important issues for Delaware are being debated openly.

I’m not on anyone’s payroll, but clearly support Jack Markell as he is the best candidate for Delaware.

P.S. I thought Dana was on Protacks payroll, but I guess Mike is a little short of campaign funds these days.

  17. Fonzy says:

“What did Jack Markell have to do with Carney getting Babcock and Brown to commit to locate all the wind install jobs here in DE? What did he have to do with Carney getting them to commit to a partnership with Del Tech? Absolutely nothing.”

Again, I stand by my previous statements. If Jack Markell was so far ahead of the curve, why didn’t he think of these things? Carney was the one that got them done.

  18. Dana Garrett says:

To my mind the challenge creates the possibility for a good outcome or a great outcome.

    The good outcome:
Carney’s claims that his insider status will get things done gets tested.

That’s a fair statement, Jason. But h0w does it square w/ this one:

“If Carney does get the three votes in the Senate that we need to pass HCR 38 then big deal he is only doing his job AND he might not have done it unless Markell forced his hand. Conversely, if Carney fails to get the Senate to pass HCR 38 this session, then Carney’s whole rationale for being Governor (that he can work with people to get things done) dissipates into a mist.”

  19. Dana Garrett says:

Oh, let’s cut the crap people. Obviously, what is going on here is we have a bunch of Markell people trying to give what we already know to be true: THE DEAL IS GOING THROUGH. I know that some of you know it. And you also know it has nothing to do w/ either Markell or Carney. So let’s just cut the crap. OK.

I think very good debates could go on about the differences between Markell’s & Carney’s positions on real issues.

But twisting this BWW matter into who is more effective at getting things done is not only irrelevant to what is actually the truth and is happening but sounds reminiscent of the carping of the Clinton campaign about utter nonsense regarding Obama.

  20. Dana Garrett says:

“P.S. I thought Dana was on Protacks payroll, but I guess Mike is a little short of campaign funds these days.”

Apparently, I’m on everyone’s payroll. It must be a system of prolonged IOU’s.

  21. Jason330 says:

    Those are good points Dana.

There is clearly Markell/Carney partisanship going on here and I’ll admit that I’m a Markell partisan.

  22. anon says:

You’re a victim of your own logical fallacies there, Garrett.

In your own words “let’s just cut the crap.”

Are you on or have you sought to be on John Carney’s payroll?

  23. Arborist John Blithe of Hockessin said he was glad to hear a debate that was “not politics as usual.”

“I’ll vote for the person who wasn’t dancing around the questions — Mike Protack had answers,” Blithe said.

As for the debate, the ground rules were ‘to be civilized at all times’. Attacking the other candidate was strictly forbidden.

All in all a good discussion and the questions were quite detailed and specific.

  24. Rob Foraker says:

Protack is promoting himself….politics as usual…huh..

  25. I didn’t promote myself, Mr. Blithe did.

  26. Ralph says:

At least if Carney can pull it off, we will know at least one politician in De. doesn’t have their hand in Delmarva Power’s pocket. Doubt it though!

  27. liberalgeek says:

Rob Foraker – Politics of the Unusual, even bizarre.

  28. Another Mike says:

“We will all be winners this year. And may get wind as well.”

There’s always lots of hot air in Dover.

I’m reading this and wondering why Tom Carper and the Democratic honchos were so worried about a primary. This is exactly why primaries are good. None of these issues would get the public airing they deserve if there were no primaries.

The next thing I want to hear from all three candidates is where they stand on open and good government bills, such as HB4 and the package of bills now in the house that would put more financial information online.

  29. Rob Foraker says:

Protack stated, I didn’t promote myself, Mr. Blithe did…..you put it on DL not Blithe

  30. Rob Foraker says:

Protack will go on WDEL 10 times this week …others get 1 time…..Then Al has his favorites…

  31. anon says:

Rob… that’s true, but aren’t you concerned that by going negative so early, you will raise your own negatives?

  32. Al Mascitti says:

Yes, Rob, I’m biased towards callers who make sense.

  33. Jason330 says:

    Comment of the day anon.

And it is only 9:00. Well done.

  34. Rob Foraker says:

Yes Al you biased toward many callers whom don’t agree with you

  35. Rob Foraker says:

My negatives are thrown in my face every day…..

  36. annon2 says:

If the wind farm doesn’t get passed before June 30, Carney is done and will lose the election to Markell. That will be his reward for playing the game.

  37. Al Mascitti says:

Actually, Rob, callers who disagree with me make the best radio. To be frank, I don’t want you on the air because nobody’s sure if you’re right in the head, and nobody wants to look insensitive by mocking you.

  38. liberalgeek says:

I don’t mind looking insensitive by mocking Rob. You should see my real-life mocking of his infamous message to Obama. My kids laugh their asses off every time I do it.

    “Mr. Obama… Senator Obama… wait.. let’s try this again… Senator Obama… You’re a pain in the butt.”

I just can’t get me enough Foraker bashing…

  39. Rob Foraker says:

Al, I feel the mocking of me to be quite educational, your sensativity and insecurity impresses me. My experience in the public eye is building, don’t worry I’ll be around for a few decades more. However I do like listening to you on the radio….I intentionally bring out the the bad in people…as I will in Delaware Politics…By the way I put your buddy Protack on the spot…

  40. Rob Foraker says:

Besides Protack you won’t find your other candidates communicating on the internet…..

  41. selander says:

    Yup. Not (markell.org) a single one (johncarney.org).

  42. Rob Foraker says:

Not 1 on 1 on Delaware Liberal….I got to give it to Mike Protack though he looks the Bull in the face and don’t back down!! This says alot for a candidate.

  43. Rob Foraker says:

AL, I’ll stop by the radio station and see you…

  44. Al Mascitti says:

    To what end?

  45. Pandora says:

    Oh my…

  46. RickJ19958 says:

  48. Rob Foraker says:

I believe the amount of money spent by Blue Water on WDEL sorta effects your opinion….
