It sounds like we need to have a head to head competion between these two.

Capozzoli’s:

The Sicilian. Not strictly an Italian sub, but the best sub I’ve had around here — sharp provolone, hot cappicola, sweet soprasetta, salami, pepper ham, roasted red peppers, onions, tomatoes, all topped off with slices of prosciutto. Easily feeds two people and if you are eating sensibly, can feed 4 people. Yummy!

and

Porto Fino’s!

Its not those oily spongey rolls but crisp on the outside soft within, fresh salad in there (lettuce, onions, peppers) and full flavor cheese with the top shelf meats.MMmmm…

Where can I get a decent Italian sub around here?

BTW – Having lived in Washington DC – I say to all the Delawareans I meet that they should not take the decent Italian sub for granted.

And Willey Farms makes a very good sandwich.

  2. Pandora says:

We go to Mike and Emma’s in Chester, but that’s not around you… sorry. Their subs are great.

  3. Bopeep says:

The world’s best is in Atlantic City, “The White House”. In delaware, Capriotties.

  4. RSmitty says:

Right in your MOT neighborhood – Immediatos.

    Agreed: Willey Farms is excellent.

There is a place on Rt 1 (right by the Chadds Ford Tavern) called Capozzoli’s (altho we think that they just changed their name) that serves a sandwich they call The Sicilian. Yummy!

    And closed on Mondays. 🙁

Rosa’s on 213 in Cecil County makes a good Italian

  7. Sagacious Steve says:

I would suggest a decent Italian dungeon.

  8. Von Cracker says:

    Casapulla’s (sp?)

    or Yatz’s

  9. Bill Dunn says:

    Consistently the best Italian sub:
Casapulla’s Elsmere Steak & Sub Shop

Now, if you want a turkey sub or bobbie…. again, consistently the best:
    Capriotti’s Subs (Silverside Rd.)

  10. Joe Cass says:

yeah, mi familia Casapulla’s are the best. When stuck here in New Castle we prefer Porto Fino’s

  11. Benched says:

Porto Fino’s! I know it was voted Delaware’s best and for good reason! Its not those oily spongey rolls but crisp on the outside soft within, fresh salad in there (lettuce, onions, peppers) and full flavor cheese with the top shelf meats.MMmmm…322-3330

I like the idea of a competition featuring Delaware’s best Italian subs. I’d love to be on the panel and I’m willing to ante up a $100 donation to the Democratic candidate of my choice (assuming it’s a candidate acceptable to Delaware Liberal, Inc). Maybe we can have an Eating Liberally contest with judges ponying up contributions as the sole criteria for being a judge. Whaddayathink?

I assume sub shops w/’English Only’ signs are disqualified??

  13. jason330 says:

    I. Love. It.

  14. truth teller says:

Pandora is correct Mike and Emma’s has the best sub all fresh meats and home made sweet peppers. However she is wrong on one account they are in Rigley Park on McDade Blvd. Take the first exit off the Blue Rt to McDade and they on the left about 2 blocks past the McDade shopping center and believe me you are in for a real treat.

  15. way to pick up the slack on the QOD….

  16. truth teller says:

OOp’s my mistake thats 2 blocks past the Rigley Park shopping center

  17. liberalgeek says:

    Is that Ridley Park?

  18. cassandra_m says:

So when do we do it? I love the idea of having judges ante up campaign donations for the privilege….

  19. R Smitty says:

J – I am totally recommending to Immediato’s that you go on their black-ball list.

  20. jason330 says:

    Draft Rules:

The judges fan out into Delaware and places within 5 miles of the state line to buy nominated subs.

They say, “large italian with everything.” at the counter of the chosen shops at 12:15 pm on the established day.

The subs are brought to some cntral place and all opened at the same time and split equally among the judges.

The judges mark their score without discussing the merits of each individual sub.

The scores are tabulated and if there are any close calls or ties the judges can discuss the merits of each sub to come to a consensus winner and runner up.

Thereby the best italian sub in this area will be scientifically established and publicized for the benefit and well being of ourselves and our posterity.

This would be a noble undertaking.

  21. jason330 says:

    Randy –

I am guilty until proven innocent.

  22. truth teller says:

Jason and if the judges can’t come to a decision than we can all adjourn to a rear room where the SUPER delegates can vote.

    JUST KIDDING

  23. liberalgeek says:

Good to see you in a good mood and in agreement, Truthy.

  24. cassandra m says:

Since the people buying the subs are defacto Superdelegates, that makes sense to me!

    😀

Jason’s rules look great to me — now we just need a date!

  25. Pandora says:

I love the idea! Too much fun!

Although I’m expecting A Bundy to show up soon and chastise us all!

  26. Westside Woman... says:

    I nominate Frankie’s on Union St., between 5th & 4th.

Helen, a real Italian, runs a one person shop w/ counter & stools and has been turning out subs & steaks for years on end…she’s pushing 80 and still goes to work 5 days a week.

Helen’s subs are just right: made to order for you by Helen herself, top shelf meat, cheese, oil, & roll, fresh veggies. The reason I like her product the best: You can eat an Italian sub by yourself w/o the bloat…her’s are not overstuffed just a perfect balance of all of the above….just like a true Momma (Mia) would make. Oh, yes, and her prices are easy on the pocket book.

652-9667 (Ask for ‘Helen’s Secret Sauce’ on your Italian sub.)

I, for one, consider Capriotti’s highly overrated and to the point of being sub-par (no pun intended). I live near the original shop on Union and (over the years) they have skimped on the ‘Bobbie’ turkey and the beef on the subs….as for the Italian see above.

Sorry for the late post (I wasn’t around till yesterday).
