Good Thing Nobody Listens To Me
I’m back from the survival camp and not seeing any news generated by Bill Lee, I decided to dig through some old stuff.
Here is a Kos Diary I wrote back in November…
Who should we nominate to be the VP ? (OR ) How to not pick a sucky VP.

Everyone is talking about who the Democrats should nominate for President. Over at Eschaton any such thread quickly turns into a discussion of hypothetical combinations:
Gore/Clinton
Clark/Obama
Obama/Vilsack
Bayh/Richardsonon and on….
The VP is traditionally chosen after the winner of a bruising primary season consults the electoral map and whatever tea leaves he has on hand. We all know how well that system has worked for Democrats. Edwards was okay, but Lieberman was HORRIBLE and cost Gore the election.
I have a better idea.
Whoever comes in SECOND at the convention should have the right of first refusal. Since 1984 this would have given us.
Mondale/Hart
Dukakis/Jackson
Clinton/Brown (okay this is not a perfect system, but Brown ran a good race and people liked him.)
Gore/BradleyI see some winning tickets in that list.
BTW – has Clinton quit yet?
Dave,
Get in touch please.

Lets have a floor fight let someone nomanate her from the floor make the convention interesting once again. Carter Kennedy JFK and LBJ Truman and the dixiecrats Reagan and Bush stop all this pussy footing around let build some excitement in our life
Personally, I like Obama/Richardson but a lot of people are pushing Obama/Webb. Actually, I would really love Biden as VP but I don’t think Biden would agree. I like Webb, but I don’t think he would help much with women voters.
As for Bill Lee, I really don’t understand why Republicans nominated him. Being relatively new to Delaware, I don’t understand why Republicans hate Protack? If they’re going to put up someone to lose to Carney or Markell why not someone without a political future in the party?
Richardson would be a horrible pick. He’s going to need someone with a strong military history to offset his dovishness. You are insane to think that Biden wouldn’t agree. The problem is he wouldn’t be asked – not with the three huge electoral votes DE would bring to the table. IMHO, the worst thing he could do would be to pick Sebelius. It would be very patronizing to think he could simply swap out a set of ovaries to appease HRC’s large block of female supporters. Webb is the only choice if he’s going to have any prayer of winning.
Rob Graham of Florida, former Senator and Governor.
Elizabeth Edwards.
I know she is unlikely to want to be on the shortlist, but even when you don’t agree with her this is someone who commands respect. She brooks no shit and doesn’t tolerate alot of stupidity — when she and her husband are talking together I always get the impression that she’s got the unbreakable backbone there.
But unless Obama can put an election swinging number of EVs in play, he should disregard the usual wisdom (as did Bill Clinton and GWB) and pick someone he thinks he can really work with and someone who can help him win. And that is (increasingly) other than EVs (cf Dick Cheney).
Webb is interesting, but am not sure I buy the idea that he helps with the “hard-working white” vote — this is a guy whose greatest support (in his squeaker of an election) came from NoVa. Sebelius has a damned impressive record against an array of increasingly unhinged wingnuts. She’s been able to steer a moderate course while collecting up moderate R souls (and registration cards). Don’t know how she helps Obama tho. Richardson has one of the best resumes out there — and if someone could convince me that he could help keep the West in play for Obama, I’d endorse that in a NY minute.
Shall it be a woman or a white male?
Any woman that goes on the ticket that isn’t named Clinton won’t do squat with her base. It’s Clinton or a white male.
Ted Stickland, governor of Ohio. The Dems need this state to win. Gotta go back to 1960 when the eventual winner did not take 2 of 3 between OH, PA and FLA. Kennedy put LBJ on the ticket and they stole Texas. No foreign policy experience on ticket with Strickland.
Sam Nunn. Helps in the south. Not a bad pick. Last two dem winners were both from the South. (Carter, Clinton)
A unity ticket with Hagel? Interesting pick especially of McCain takes a dem like Lieberman.
The no picks. Rendell would be a wated pick. Obama has a shot in PA anyway. Richardson does nothing. Webb, incredibly, has less experience than Obama.
I like Bloomberg, even tho there is still no foreign policy experience on ticket. Just announce Biden will be Secretary of State.
My guess is McCain will put Crist (Florida) on the GOP ticket.
