Call or Email Fox News

Filed in National by on June 11, 2008

I’ve never had the urge to call Fox News and complain. I just let their comical fake-news wash over me, however this is beneath contempt and I feel like I have to do something.

Fox News calls Michelle Obama “Obama’s baby mama”

An alert reader wrote in just a little while ago to let us know about something he’d spotted on Fox News Wednesday afternoon. During a segment discussing conservative attacks against Michelle Obama, the wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama, the network described the former as “Obama’s baby mama.”

I checked, and sure enough, as you can see below, our e-mailer was right. In fact, that description was displayed on screen several times during the segment, which featured anchor Megyn Kelly and conservative blogger Michelle Malkin, an FNC contributor.

Geez, do these people ever stop? It’s like the National Inquirer for the Klan. At least they didn’t say allegedly… yet.

  2. Al Mascitti says:

As Joan Walsh at Salon noted, it’s either racist or clueless, and I’m not sure which option makes Faux News look worse.

  3. Over on Eschaton they are taking bets on how soon someone will say n****r on air.

  4. donviti says:

but Obama does have 2 pigeons

  5. G Rex says:

Sorry to burst your bubble, but when Barry won his senate seat in Illinois Michelle announced him at the victory party as…

    wait for it…

    “my baby’s daddy.”

Oh, and for those of you who don’t regularly watch Fox News, their news ticker has begun referring to Ahmedinejad as “A-Jad” for brevity.

  6. cassandra_m says:

Sorry to burst your bubble, GRex, but no one is going to mistake either you or the GOPer who wrote this completely idiotic talking point as the Fowler’s of urban slang usage, you know?

  7. G Rex says:

Yo, why you gotta hate on a playa like that, Cass? (I read it in today’s Wall Street Journal, if you must know.)

The underlying point in this whole brouhaha is that anyone who strays from the “Obama is the second coming of JFK” script is instantly branded a racist troglodyte and subject to a media torches-and-pitchforks parade. (I almost said lynch mob, but that would have been racist, too.) Okay, so maybe calling her “Obama’s baby mama” was a poor decision by some editor, but you Obama-ites have no sense of humor whatsoever when it comes to your sainted candidate.

  8. anon says:

Michelle can call her husband whatever the hell she wants to.

  9. cassandra_m says:

I’ll build on anon’s point — there is a difference in how a married woman refers to her husband vs. the disrespectful baby mama crap. The underlying point is that it wasn’t funny — it was disrespectful and you people are wearing out the charge of humorlessness when you get caught out saying the wrong thing.

  10. G Rex says:

I’ll admit I personally have no respect whatsoever for Michelle Obama, and that the Fox caption was dumb, but you people are wearing out the instant outrage card, and you’re still humorless. It reminds me of when I was teaching in China, and one of my students got upset that I referred to Mao Zedong by his name, and not as “Chairman Mao.”

  11. Brian says:

Hi G-Rex, welcome back, this is a little snarky, so please do not be offended. I am not upset; I actually think this is all ludicrous.

The media is a joke and I basically see them that way; but even I have to admit that the Elite’s Faux News Propaganda Organ does a great job for the RNC.

Just one question speaking of sainted leaders…. Does it upset you if I do not call him “Chairman Bush” and instead use monikers like “World Emperor” or “World Dictator” or “Rightist Obstructionist?”

Does it upset republicans when the “Glorious Conservative Cultural Revolution” brings back and introduces those lovely days to us Americans through shredding the constitution, threatening academics, propelling economic slowdown with a five year plan and spend their time threatening world peace, prosperity and social harmony?

I have seen the gleam in the eyes of the young neoconservative republican crowd carrying around copies of Newt’s “little blue book” and have to admit it reminds me of “Morning Sun TV.” Permanent Reactionary World Revolution….

So really, if I call him George W. Bush instead of the “The Great Helmsman Whose Head is like a West Sun” or “Chairman Bush” does it make republicans upset?

Or does it make me a “leftist deviationist” culpable for political crimes?

I ‘d rather just say Chairman Mao and Comrade Zhou Enlai….. at least that way I know where I am coming from and know how to sing Arise, Arise Arise…

  12. Brian says:

I almost forgot to add, I am very happy and propserous under the elite’s democratic dictatorship and the rule of the Chairman Bush.

That is my self-criticism of the day.

  13. cassandra_m says:

John Scalzi at Whatever blog has the authoritative deconstruction of this business:

“It sure as hell matters to Fox News, which is why it’s dog whistling about Barack so loudly that it’s vibrating the windows. Calling Michelle Obama a “baby mama” isn’t just Fox News having a happy casual larf; it’s using urban slang to a) remind you the Obamas are black, b) belittle a woman of considerable personal accomplishment, and c) frame Barack Obama’s relationship to his wife and children in a way that insults him, minimizes his love for and commitment to his family, and reinforces stereotypes about black men. Someone at Fox News just ought to call Barack Obama “boy” at some point so we can have all the cards right out there on the table.”

Exactly right. And humorless too. The difference between this and your teaching in China anecdote is in the intended insult of “baby mama”. Which you know. And we understand that humorless=not interested in the racial stereotypes.

  14. Kay Black says:

It’s a fact that Fox News is huge and “experts” are clamboring to appear. Fox presents a topic and introduces these experts and immediately each side abandons the topic, launching into biased statements. It’s insulting, don’t you know you have clout and we have remotes?
Simply tell these experts that if they stray from the topic they will NOT be appearing in the future.
Oh and then stick to it.

  15. Lea Graham says:

We have received information from Fox news that Barack Obama is the largest benefeciary of the current financial crisis that we are currently going through.

Please be more specific to the American viewers. Something is radically wrong when a candidate for president receives the larges amount of money from the Wall Street crisis which causes a major set back in our economy.

Please do not let us down. I think we have a right to know something as important as this about a candidate who will be running for the President of the United States in November.

  16. mike w. says:

right….. you folks see nothing at all wrong with the media making fun of Bush constantly and comparing him to a chimp, but you’re outraged when Fox News pokes fun at Michelle Obama.

BTW – After purposefully interjecting herself into this race and saying some really stupid, bigoted crap (before Obama’s campaign shut her up) I see nothing wrong with the media poking some fun at her, or even belittling her for that matter.

  17. anon says:

the media making fun of Bush constantly and comparing him to a chimp

This BS can be disproved without even breaking a sweat.

  18. jason330 says:

Please excuse Mike. He thinks DelawareLiberal IS the media.

  19. cassandra m says:

Provided you could actually attribute thinking to mike w.

  20. pandora says:

Delaware Liberal isn’t The Media? 😉

  21. mike w. says:

Where did I say DL was “the media?” Oh that’s right I didn’t.

Man, you folks think too highly of yourselves.

“Provided you could actually attribute thinking to mike w.”

Cass – I can’t really fault you for this comment. When you’re incapable of rational, logical thought you’re certainly going to be unable to recognize it in others.

  22. pandora says:

    … or, I’m rubber and you’re glue?

  23. Lila Camp says:

When I owned coin laundry’s . I paid my own way to conventions and for my own hotel and food. Going meant that I would get some special deals on the products that I wanted. I don’t think anyone should be wined and dined at my expense. Let them pay thie own way.

  24. PattiP says:

Michelle Obama did say as she introduced her husband at one rally as “my baby daddy”. I cringed when I heard that. Come on….that was just too far out there.

Fox News is NUMBER ONE in ratings….someone likes it.
