Comment Rescue and Breaking News: The Unnamed Retirement Materializes
Comment from the astute Sagacious Steve in the 62 District Strategy, Part II thread:
BREAKING NEWS: And give Celia credit for once. She has posted that Rep. Pam Maier is retiring to move to Colorado with her husband for employment reasons. This becomes a distinct pickup opportunity for the D’s.

So who knows more? Clearly the Republicans were not expecting to have to run this many seats (this sounds like their national issue too), and Rep. Meier was expected to hold on to her seat easily. Who are the credible candidates for Dems in this District?
Love this quote from Celia Cohen’s blog:
The breaks keep going against the Republicans as they fight to stay out of the minority, where they have not been since they won control in 1984. One Democrat predicted his party would have an easier time finding someone to run for Maier’s seat because of Republican nervousness over losing the majority.
As this gleeful Democrat put it, “Who wants to run on their side? It’s like offering someone a ticket to the Titanic — after it hit the iceberg.”

Bye Bye Pammicakes. She has that southern-tinged falcetto (sp?) voice that lowers dramatically when you actually strike up a topic about, say, the depleted Transportation Trust Fund. Last year I attended the Newark area legis roundup where they have an informalish Q&A (sheesh all but Peterson are GOP). Pammicakes stopped letting me ask questions after two or three zingers.
I love me some Pammicakes…especially with some strawberries and whipped cream. Seriously, though, I see this as another Dem pickup. Should we start getting used to the title Speaker Gilligan?
Mike Castle’s leadership of the DE GOP has been fantastic!
Just sayin’
A couple of points here. An 800 registration plurality in a New Castle County Rep District is not ‘nominal’, as Celia said. While it’s not a guarantee of victory, it makes this open seat more likely to flip to the D’s than to remain with the R’s. Memo to Celia: It’s not Uncle Pete duPont’s New Castle County anymore.
Don’t know if this’ll mean anything when it comes to selecting a candidate, but all of the election districts (precincts) that comprise the 21st RD are in Senatorial districts represented by two of the most progressive senators in Dover: Karen Peterson and Dave Sokola. I sure hope that their input is sought in identifying the Democratic candidate.
And Oberle may still be coming. I have spoken to 2 sources that said, “Oh sure, I can totally see that. He told me that he was going one more time 3 years ago.”
Well, Geek, Charlie West said the same thing…for 20 years. To quote Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks: “How can I miss you when you won’t go away?”
BTW, my totally-uninformed early line prediction for the 21st (my prediction, not the names I would choose): NCC Councilman Tim Sheldon vs. Michael Ramone (who lost to Sokola in ’06).
Fair enough. I’ll see if I can get a quote.
Sagacious, I’m hearing the same thing. If Gilligan convinces Shelton to do this it would be a shame. Ramone romps.
bye pam, however thanks for the offer to baby sit when i questioned you about dstp at acme and told you i couldnt make the meeting. i had to watch my kids, but you could have baby sat for me at a meeting you should have been attending.
omg. Tim Sheldon is a disaster in the making. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE someone besides him has to step forward.
As Pam so nicely said it on air today, “Yes, well, Tim doessssssssss have a record.”
This is Ramone’s turn to shine! GO MIKE. You will never get a more REAL guy who is interested in doing what is RIGHT.
I hope Ramone goes for it
I was a shame what Sokola did to him

Tom S. “Amen”
It could be Strine favored Sokola as they are both committed Dems. Keep your eyes on Strine; especially on political issues.
For me Strine sits on the same Group W bench as Gegrory Sleeze (Sleet). Watch both of them…you’ll begin to see a pattern.
