The Obscenely Rich are Lee’s Base.

Filed in National by on July 14, 2008

Retired Judge Bill Lee held a swanky fundraiser at the “opulent Montchanin Road home” of Irenée and Barbara du Pont last evening.  According to the Lee campaign, 215 people attended at $250 a head, which according to my math, means that Lee raised $53,750.00 last night.  Lee admitted that fundraisers such as these are the only way he can hope to defeat either Markell or Carney in the fall.

I suppose that means he is not raising money online or from direct mail from ordinary middle class Delawareans he wishes to come out of retirement to govern.   He needs opulent fundraisers in the homes of the obscenely rich.

You mean he’s not on vacation? He should really be enjoying his retirement.

  2. anon says:

WTF??? These people have $250 in their sofa cushions.

  3. anonymous says:

Maybe he can have his next fundraiser at Markell’s house, it’s right around the corner from that DuPont mansion.

What’s “obscene” about being rich? You say it like having $100 million is a BAD thing.

  5. Truth says:

Markell drops $750,000 into his own campaign, and you’re equating Lee with the obscenely rich for having a $250 a head fundraiser? Markell’s out of state fundraisers cost more than that.

When your opponent is a gajillionaire and you’re of average-guy means, you need to raise money to compete.

  6. Disbelief says:

I don’t need obscene, but filthy would be ok; I could take a shower.

  7. I applaud what he is doing. It is his green plan. He isn’t wasting electricity going on the internet and stuff. he is stumping the old fashioned way

  8. liberalgeek says:

I think he rode a horse to the fundraiser. Those motorcars are just too modern. 🙂

I wonder if for $250, the good foxchasers were treated to “helicopter” Pete dropping live turkeys a la Les Nessman?

We’ve done this before, let’s do this again.

According to his 2007 reports, Markell raised $2,103,398.56 – not including in-kind donations or loans to himself. Of that number, $2,086,035.95 was from donations over $100. Only $17,362.61 came from “the little guy” – according to beloved super-liberal and righteous thinker Jack Markell’s finance report.

I’m no math-magician, but that’s 99.17% of a $2+ million donation base that comes from those to whom $100 means nothing at all, being donated to a man who loaned himself $750,ooo in cash. By all means, let’s do the “out-of-touch rich white guy” game.

By the way, DelDem – donations can be made on Lee’s website (I’ll let you link it). They can even be for less than the cost of a self-published “look how smart I am” book.

“By all means, let’s do the “out-of-touch rich white guy” game.”

You can be just as “out of touch” if you’re a black guy. Just look at Obama and his batshit insane wife.

  13. Dana says:

There’s no such thing as “obscenely rich.”

  14. jason330 says:

Certainly not among DelawareLiberal commenters and contributors anyway.

There is no such thing as merely rich for that matter.

  15. Dominique says:

    Rick –

I donated more than $100 to Markell, but I’m just an ‘ordinary’ middle class girl (btw, I hate being referred to as ordinary). It’s a bit of a stretch to imply that people who donate > $100 are ‘out-of-touch rich white guys’. Some people spend that much on cigarettes and beer in a week. It’s hardly a fortune.

  16. RickJ19958 says:

    Dominique –

Did you donate $250? If so, you too can be out of touch!

My point is that attacking Lee for something Carkell and Marney are exceedingly guilty of is dizzyingly hypocritical.
