Message To Senator Henry: We Are Watching
This letter speaks more eloquently than I ever could about the integrity of the Progressive Democrats for Delaware (PDD) endorsement process.
July 15, 2008
Dear Senator Henry,
Thank you for completing your candidate survey and returning it to the Progressive Democrats for Delaware (PDD) Endorsement Committee. Normally, we would interview a candidate whose survey responses were as “progressive” as yours in consideration for endorsement by PDD (which includes a contribution and possible volunteers); but there seems to be a problem with your response to one of our survey’s most critical items.
Your survey response indicated that you supported the following statement: “The General Assembly should remove its own exemption from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), and commit to bringing such legislation to the floor for a vote — by petition, if necessary.” [emphasis added] We conveyed your position to Senator Peterson, knowing that she was circulating a petition to bring SB 4 to the floor of the Senate for a vote. Senator Peterson informed us that she approached you about signing the petition and that you refused.
Since “open government” is the Progressive Democrats’ top priority — and you failed to keep your commitment to bring the issue to the floor for a vote “by petition, if necessary,” we will not be able to consider you for our endorsement in the upcoming election.
We felt it was only fair to let you know why we won’t be endorsing you. If you would like to discuss this, please call me at (removed) or email me at (removed).
Very truly yours,
June Eisley, Chair
Endorsement Committee
…and Senator Henry’s integrity for that matter.
Now that is what I can crashing the party. Pay attention Democrats. If you lie to us, you will lose our support and our vote as we primary you.
I for one will not be voting for Henry in September, since I reside in the 2nd Senatorial District.
Way to go PDD!!!
Well, I feel shitty right now. I just mailed the letter – she hasn’t had time to receive it yet and here it is out in the public. If this gets back to her before she receives the letter, I deeply, deeply apoligize.
Why would you feel shitty, June? MRH’s decision to not support a petition to force SB4 to the senate floor made me feel shitty. Her decision to vote against Gov. Minner’s override of SB245, and especially her reasoning for changing her vote, made me feel particularly shitty, as if I had been shit upon.
So screw Margaret Rose Henry and her feelings. You have nothing to feel bad about.
June does an amazing job of leading the PDD endorsement committee and we are so lucky to have her talents and integrity as part of the process. Yeah June!
Sorry June –
I should have held back a day or two. I’ll be more circumspect in the future.
