Copeland’s Old District (SD4) a Possible Dem Pick-up
Michael S. Katz has filed as the Democratic candidate for the 4th Senate District. By all reports Katz is an intelligent and decent person. He is a doctor, more involved in American Medical Association politics up till now, but always someone very interested in local and national politics. Insiders expect him to run a very professional and decently funded campaign. He may face a primary, but that should play out between now and July 25, the filing deadline.
Meanwhile, the Republicans have a three way primary (Son of Clatworthy (c), Abbott and Fleming), so let us hope for hurt feelings on their side.
The 4th senatorial district went for Bush over Kerry in 2004 by around 900 votes. That does not bode well for Dr. Katz. But if Obama has cross-over appeal and if he pulls new voters to the polls and if he has coattails (a lot of “ifs”), it could be a pick-up.
I live in the Hockessin edge of the district. Mike Fleming was door-knocking last weekend. Abbott, of course, has the highest name recognition, which is a mixed blessing because he has stepped on some toes with neighbors; I haven’t met anybody in the district who knows anything about Clatworthy.
What complicates this race is that Greenville-Centerville is prime territory for switch-over voters — Republicans who switched registration so they can vote for Markell in the primary. So some of the more moderate Republicans won’t be voting.
I wouldn’t count on any hard feelings over which R wins the primary.
