Joke of the Day

Filed in National by on July 26, 2008

“We’ve had a lot of challengers that are sensing that we have a lot of momentum on our side,” he said.

Those are the words of Tom Ross, the Delaware GOP chairman, in response to his party’s failure to challenge any Democrat in the Senate.  He says this despite the presence of any challengers or momentum on his party’s side.

You know, it must really suck to be a spinmeister when you’ve got nothing to spin.   And it must really really suck when your own House Majority Leader contradicts you.

“You can’t make any gains in the Senate if you don’t make a run at the seats, that’s certain, and so it’s disappointing to hear,” Cathcart said of the lack of Republican opposition.

I think the democrats should swing open the doors to libertarians, so we can influence the party. The same applied to Tom and the GOP. I think we can have a positive influence on both parties.

  2. delawaredem says:

On social issues and civil liberties, I and many Democrats have libertarian instincts. Indeed, I think we agree on those issues. On economic and state’s rights and social safety net issues, I think we disagree.

So there are ways we can work together as Democrats and Libertarians and there are ways we can’t. I suppose it depends on which issues are important to you.

  3. Anon says:

Why would they waste resources on running against people they absolutely can not beat? DeLuca? Marshall? Henry? These districts are as big as 8-1 Democrat.

Conserve resources for where you need them.

  4. jason330 says:

Man, the DE GOP is in sad shape. I guess as far as Castle’s legacy is concerned, that is the one thing to his credit.

  5. Dist says:

You’ve got to cut him a break. He just took over from Daniello’s equally evil twin Strine. Its going to take a couple, few election cycles to
    1) get decent candidates in place (i.e., Tyler Nixon)
    2) get anyone to trust the party word that they’re worth voting for

  6. jason330 says:

Just reading the whole NJ story. Did Copeland just blame Republican redistricting for Republican problems this year? I think he did.

  7. delawaredem says:

    Yes he did. LOL.

  8. jason330 says:

    What a clown.

  9. NotSoAnon says:

How did the Democratic Senate do Republican redistricting?

Also, if you use both your brain cells and think about what he said, you’ll realize that the non-presidential years will present great opportunity to the R’s with the expected retirements of Adams, Bunting and possibly Cook and Sokola.

  10. Mike Protack says:

Possibly we could offer driver licenses to people to vote for Republicans?

Cathcart is correct, when you have no GOP opposition you have freed up Democrats to work in other races.

An absolute disgrace is no one running for New Castle County Exec or Council President or any seats on council.

  11. NotSoAnon says:

And yet instead of running for County Exec, where your professed labor Republicanism (lacking, of course, any labor endorsements or donations as evidence) would supposedly work, you decide to get your ass handed to you statewide. Again.

  12. RickJ19958 says:

An absolute disgrace is no one running for New Castle County Exec or Council President or any seats on council.

If only there were some New Castle County resident who runs for an office every cycle that he isn’t qualified for, that realized he could actually engender some support within his party if he took on a county-wide seat instead of aiming for the top of the ticket every two years. Maybe someone with a union background to appeal to NCC swing voters.

Of course, such a man wouldn’t insult the party hierarchy at every opportunity for not finding qualified candidates for county-wide offices and expect support from them later, especially when he’s currently running for an office for which he has absolutely no qualification.

Does anyone see where I’m going with this?

  13. Dist says:

Rick, as usual, your subtlety is sophisticated, intellectual and low-key.

  14. delawaredem says:

    Very good Rick.

  15. liberalgeek says:

    I don’t get it…
    .
    .
    Oh, now I get it.

  16. Al Mascitti says:

“Why would they waste resources on running against people they absolutely can not beat? DeLuca? Marshall? Henry? These districts are as big as 8-1 Democrat.”

That’s a splendid strategy for never winning those seats. The reason the GOP is sinking in this state is lack of follow-through. People like Chris Castagno and Ernie Lopez were good candidates, they just didn’t have any name recognition. And, because neither is running again, they’ll never get any.

You run in races you know you’ll probably lose so you can build for the future. Make your mistakes and learn from them. Someday the people Anon lists will retire or get caught up in a scandal, but the GOP will have nobody ready to take advantage. Foolish and sad.

And, most significantly, why no challenger for Venables? There’s no more vulnerable Democrat in the Senate — he’s old, he misbehaved with his Street Fund money and he lives in a conservative and increasingly Republican area. A completely blown opportunity.
