  1. delawaredem says:

No, but we too often trust the press to refute what are obviously false charges instead of doing it ourselves, and we, by our nature, don’t like negative campaigns because we feel we can win without them, while the Republicans can’t win without them.

If this campaign was devoid of negative attacks, McCain would have no chance.

  2. Jason330 says:

No. This is a dumb post, but no more dumb than the political discourse in general.

Unrelated: The Fed is meeting today and I just heard on TV that economists now think we’ll need to go through a deep recession (if not depression) befor the economy turns around.

    Thanks Bush!

  3. delawaredem says:

Donviti is just trying to stoke the fires.

  4. Rebecca says:

We’re not pussies but we’re not bold faced liars either. It is a disadvantage in the age of sound bites.

  5. TommyWonk says:

    Brilliantest?

  6. nemski says:

No, Democrats aren’t pussies, but DV, you are since you crossed it out. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Pandora says:

Yes, at the Federal level. Dems in congress are afraid to make a stand for fear of being called weak on _______ (fill in the blank).

We also suck at sound bites. Now, that’s not a bad thing since most issues cannot be broken down into good and evil, right and wrong. I believe this trait of answering a complex question with a detailed answer is why Repubs label us “elitist” or “intelec-chew-als”.

After 9/11 the question was: why do they hate us?
Bush: They hate us for our freedom
Dems: There’s a history with Bin Laden and it’s linked to our bases in Saudi…

    American People: They’re evil

    Estate Tax
Bush: They want to tax you after you die
Dems: The estate tax only applies if your estate is worth….

American People: I’m against this because someday I’ll die, so this applies to me

    Republicans know their audience.

  8. Jason330 says:

I was just saying that Joe Scar. Just said the same thing as Dv. And many more people watch “morning joe” than read this site.

Joe didn’t use the word pussies.

  9. cassandra m says:

It isn’t even so much sound bites — Dems need to just need to show up so that there can at least be he say she say reporting. All too often, they will concede the talking to the repubs who are delighted to be in front of a microphone to say just anything. They don’t need to say anything factual, since they understand that fact-checking is not what modern journalists will do. Dems really need to just step up and say anything to address the issues of the day. Provide some juicy tit for tat — that is all that is needed.

  10. time for another 6 month hiatus nemski, starting now

  11. TRUTH TELLER says:

Off shore Drilling the people are to dumb to see that this is the last chance that the two oil men in the white house have to reward their friends BIG OIL. and Nancy and Harry just like the FISA bill will go along so the answer to the question is YES

  12. mike w. says:

I would say yes, but McCain’s run a pretty terrible campaign himself.

  13. anon says:

I have to agree, the fix is in on the offshore drilling just like for FISA. Prices are going down because the futures market knows it’s a done deal.

When they say “offshore drilling” they really are just interested in getting access to the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

I don’t care if they drill there, as long as there are givebacks like windfall taxes, mandates on conservation and renewables, and assurances the oil will be used domestically.

But I am not counting on Pelosi and Reid to hold out for those givebacks.

  14. Von Cracker says:

The shit ain’t shit until after the conventions. I reserve judgment.

  15. Von Cracker says:

Though I will say that running a campaign of exclusion is much easier than the opposite.

  16. delawaredem says:

Personally, if offshore dealing is included in a deal that includes a real investment in renewable energies, a windfall profits tax, and conservation, I am fine with it. And that is what Obama has said.

That is a true compromise, rather than his supposed “compromise” on FISA, which wasn’t a real compromise at all.

  17. cassandra m says:

Actually, they are less interested in access to anything off shore or even to ANWR — they are interested in the additional tax breaks and subsidies that come with all of this opening up. And they seem to think that the current gas price crisis is their last best chance to get these.

Frankly, I don’t have alot of objections to drilling anywhere — they won’t make much of a dent in oil availability or price here — but the oil companies must capitalize whatever exploration or drilling to be done on their own. If XOM or any of the oil companies cannot get Wall Street to capitalize their drilling or exploration ops, then you now know everything you need to know about that project.

  18. TRUTH TELLER says:

    DELAWAREDEM!!!!

I agree Nancy and Harry won’t hold out . Why don’t we tell the oil companies that they must ship the oil to the USA not like now they are shipping Alaska oil from the north slope to Asia and Japan.

Also there must be a reason that they are not drilling on the 64 million acres they already have under lease 40 million of which are off shore.

  19. mike w. says:

You know what? If I were running an oil co. right now I’d do everything I could to manipulate prices and rake in as much profit as possible between now and January.

They’d be crazy not to considering what we’ve been consistenly hearing from Obama and the Dems in Congress.

  20. Von Cracker says:

You should be, Mike, because that’s what they’ve been doing for a while now…

  21. mike w. says:

Good for them. It’s an appropriate response when folks in power are shouting “windfall profit taxes” every chance they get.

  22. pandora says:

Isn’t that like saying… If I were Iran I would be doing everything I could to develop nuclear weapons?

Because they’d be crazy not to considering what we’ve been consistently hearing from Bush, McCain and the Republicans in Congress.

    Just sayin’

  23. mike w. says:

Somewhat, but Iran would want nukes even if we had nothing to do with them, simply because Israel also has nukes. If anyone in your general neighborhood has nukes then you want them too.

  24. pandora says:

Not “somewhat”, Mike – Exactly! ๐Ÿ™‚

Unless you’re saying that the only factor influencing oil companies are the Dems?

  25. mike w. says:

“Unless youโ€™re saying that the only factor influencing oil companies are the Dems?”

I’m certainly not saying that, however the Dems are the ones blatantly threatening to curtail oil company profits, so it only makes sense for Big Oil to squeeze out as much profit as possible between now and the election, should “The Messiah” be elected.

  26. pandora says:

That’s why my comment #22 was EXACTLY correct, and not somewhat!

  27. Von Cracker says:

We could just classify oil as a “Strategic National Resource” and be done with it all….

But I’d rather make the old, tired thing just irrelevant through the massive expansion of alternative fuel sources.

But hey, Oil Execs and Sheiks need to eat too!

  28. Von Cracker says:

By the way, the term “Messiah” means nothing to me, except as a barometer of your pettiness….no offense.

  29. pandora says:

VC, your compassion humbles me. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  30. mike w. says:

I base that nickname on the message and rhetoric of his speeches…….. and let’s face it, he does have a messianic complex.

  31. Von Cracker says:

It amazes me when people defend these companies because of some f’ed up conflation between capitalism and patriotism.

It like the Stockholm Syndrome for Big Business.

But what the Average Jose should be thinking is: “If you fuck with us, we’ll be the death of you!”

But if the Hess’ can drop 28k each to the McCain/GOP campaign, in order to get what they want (McCain was anti-off-shore drilling, let’s not forget), what can be done except for removing the proxies from power?

  32. Von Cracker says:

    Really, Mike?

I always read into it as him saying that the only thing that can save us is ourselves.

But if thinking the way you do keeps you out of the Liberal camp, then…whatever gets you through the night….

  33. mike w. says:

“It amazes me when people defend these companies because of some fโ€™ed up conflation between capitalism and patriotism. ”

The same could be said about government, social programs, and “fairness”

  34. Von Cracker says:

    no it can’t

  35. it can be “said” VC but it would be wrong which is a typical GOP way to do things, say a lie over and over and over until every bedwetter recites it as gospel

  36. pandora says:

I sincerely hope Mike ends up with a career that makes him a lot of money. I can’t imagine what will become of him otherwise.

  37. mike w. says:

Funny how you all jump all over me simply because I refuse to hate rich people.

  38. Andy says:

You know what? If I were running an oil co. right now Iโ€™d do everything I could to manipulate prices and rake in as much profit as possible between now and January

Why not they’ve been doing it since 9/11 and Katrina

  39. mike,

not all rich people, just the ones that got rich at the expense of the little people
