Markell coming up big

Filed in National by on August 8, 2008

At a news conference to announce his plan for making a higher education more affordable, Markell said that if elected, he wants to double over four years the amount allocated by the state for need-based financial aid. That would bring the amount available for scholarships for low-income students to more than $20 million, he said.

I liked this nugget:

Of Markell’s plans, Carney said: “It takes more than just talk to get things done; it takes leadership.”

Coming from the guy that currently works under Minner? That’s funny JC.

“I’ve worked to improve education at all levels and supported the creation of the SEED scholarship program, which gives all Delaware students access to [earning a degree] at Delaware Tech with a pathway to the University of Delaware,” Carney said. “A priority for me when I’m governor is to create a pathway [for students to attend] Delaware State University as part of that program.”

and Delaware’s schools are JUST THRIVING too

Finally something where I agree with Markell.

  2. FSP says:

Is Markell funding all of this out of his pocket?

  3. you don’t support an obtainable/affordable education for delaware residents?

  4. FSP says:

You don’t support giving everything to everyone?

  5. Shirley says:

I have the same question as FSP: where is the money coming from. I like Markell, but it sounds like alot of feel-good words without the plan to back it up.

  6. nemski says:

The SEED program is an excellent program.

    http://seedscholarship.delaware.gov/

    Do some research next time.

  7. since when are republicans concerned about paying for something.

oh, I know, when a Democrat proposes it.

What is your Candidate Mike Protack offering?

  8. Al Mascitti says:

Sorry, Nemski, but I think the SEED program blows. It’s been a way of boosting enrollment at DelTech, whose president then turns around and says his burgeoning enrollment means a new dedicated tax to fund expansion of A COMMUNITY COLLEGE. I call BS on the Lonnie George Enrichment Scheme.

  9. nemski,

knowing how to do research takes an education and the gop can’t afford one in delaware.

  10. nemski says:

Al, I see your point, but I think the SEED program is for those kids that normally wouldn’t be on the college track. This I believe is a good thing, maybe we get only a few dozen a year to finally graduate from college (I have no stats to back this up), but a college degree (no matter how useless) is absolutely needed if someone wishes to pursue a career in the white-collar world.

  11. nemski says:

Also, let me go on record stating that I pay way too little in property tax. If it was doubled and went to education, I’d be fine with that.

  12. mike w. says:

Nemski – Why not tell your neighbor that and offer to pay his property taxes? Or better yet, talk to the state and find a way to donate that amount towards education.

  13. nemski says:

    Mike W, it’s called a society.

A group of humans broadly distinguished from other groups by mutual interests, participation in characteristic relationships, shared institutions, and a common culture.

And you wonder why people don’t “debate” with you when you write statements like that.

  14. anon says:

A group of humans broadly distinguished from other groups by mutual interests, participation in characteristic relationships, shared institutions, and a common culture.

Society only matters to the GOP if war is involved and if there’s corporate welfare where some fat cats get really rich and the tax burden falls on the middle class.

  15. and if you are not gay or lesbian (redundant?)

  16. mike w. says:

Nemski – If YOU want to pay more in taxes but your neighbor doesn’t do you believe “society” has a right to compel him to pay more as well?

  17. nemski says:

Absolutely Mike W. This link might help you understand.

The seed program rewards those of mediocre educational abilities with the prospect of college. Unfortunately, if i remember what i read about a year ago, only about 65% of the Seed recipients finished the first year. No i can’t quote it because i honestly dont remember where i read it.

what we need is additional tax breaks for families who are going to college. I would like to see similar tax deductions as in MD for families opening college savings plans. allow parents to claim deductions on de. taxes with money put into the plans.

also spread the money for kids not going to college. in de only about 80% graduate high school and probably only about 60% go on to college. funnel that money into expanding the state’s apprenticeship programs for skilled trades.

  19. mike w. says:

Nemski – What about property rights? Is that not a violation of the property rights of your neighbor? If not, why?

  20. mike w. says:

“I would like to see similar tax deductions as in MD for families opening college savings plans. allow parents to claim deductions on de. taxes with money put into the plans.”

This would be an excellent idea.

  21. pandora says:

    LOL! Nemski you da man!

  22. nemski says:

Property rights? I don’t even believe in private property. It’s medieval.

  23. mike w. says:

Well Nemski, you’re certainly on the right blog for that kind of mindset, and supporting the right Presidential Candidate.

I’ll bet you think Cuba is a wonderfully “enlightened” country too.

  24. nemski says:

No, I don’t think Cuba is a wonderful place. Nor do I think Cuba was a wonderful place prior to 1958.

But I did meet a lot of very poor people in South America who thought that food on the table for their children was more important than free speech.

  25. nemski says:

DV said earlier: don’t feed the trolls

    But DV, they’re so cute.

  26. nemski says:

    Aristotle said

If they do not share equally enjoyments and toils, those who labor much and get little will necessarily complain of those who labor little and receive or consume much. But indeed there is always a difficulty in men living together and having all human relations in common, but especially in their having common property.

that is sort of Obama’s plan actually

  28. nemski,

Absolutely Mike W. This link might help you understand.
you didn’t really believe that statement did you?

  29. nemski says:

you didn’t really believe that statement did you?

The girls with the big American breasts walking by on the Outer Banks caused a quick and sudden loss of blood to my brain. I’m all better now.

  30. mike w. says:

“But I did meet a lot of very poor people in South America who thought that food on the table for their children was more important than free speech.”

Nemski – Luckily in America we have a Bill of Rights that says otherwise.

  31. arthur says:

Obama’s plan calls for a single $4000 tax credit for the first year, if i am not mistaken. the deductions for 529 plans are for individuals participating in their state plans. MD allows $2500 per participant/per beneficiary to be deducted from state taxes. ergo, 2 parents each open accounts for 2 kids can deduct $10k a year from taxes and anything above and beyond can be rolled into the next year.

  32. arthur says:

the other part that is necessary is supporting delawares apprenticeship program. many arent cut out for college and are better working in labor fields. more money needs to go for their training and receiving journeyman papers.

  33. I bet you frightened them off too

    GUNNARRRRRRRRRR

  34. nemski says:

The kids that go to Hodgson are better off when they graduate high school than I was after 4 years of college.

  35. mike w. says:

“I bet you frightened them off too

    GUNNARRRRRRRRRR”

What the hell are you talking about DTB? – Jeez man.

  36. arthur says:

The Delaware Apprenticeship and Training program has been underfunded for years and because of this has a waiting list of potential candidates. Those who go through this program receive journeymanship papers stating their excellence in a trade and makes them employable throughout the entire country. This program needs to be expanded for true workers.
