It’s all Edwards’ fault!

Filed in National by on August 11, 2008

Howard Wolfson, a man responsible for one of the most poorly run campaigns in modern history and newly hired Fox News Contributor, now blames Hillary’s loss on John Edwards.

Sen. Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic presidential nominee if John Edwards had been caught in his lie about an extramarital affair and forced out of the race last year, insists a top Clinton campaign aide, making a charge that could exacerbate previously existing tensions between the camps of Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama.
“I believe we would have won Iowa, and Clinton today would therefore have been the nominee,” former Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson told ABC News.com.

Really? That’s assuming quite a bit, Mr. Wolfson. What if we assume Edwards received the “anyone but Hillary” vote? What if the Clinton Campaign took responsibility for their loss rather than blaming everyone else.

Because the truth is… no one knows what would have happened if Edwards wasn’t in the race.

If Edwards had been knocked out before Iowa, then there would have been only one viable anti-Hillary candidate: Barack Obama.

It is quite possible that more than half of Edwards’ vote would have gone to Obama. Indeed, Obama won Iowa based on his organization and ground game. Edwards’ dropping out before Iowa would not have improved Hillary’s organization and ground game.

So, Wolfson premises his speculation on that fact that Iowa launched Obama. Indeed, and that launch would have taken place without or without Edwards. What Wolfson, to this day, fails to understand is that Hillary had a horrible campaign organization and structure, and that is why she lost.

Obama would be crushing McCain by even more now if Edwards had quit early.

Based on what DelawareDem says, we would not have had the prolonged primary.

    Edwards you bastard!

Actually go to Fivethirtyeight.com and Nate Silver explains why the polls show Obama would probably have beaten HIllary by a larger margin had Edwards dropped out before Iowa.

  6. Rebecca says:

Everyone I know who supported Edwards switched to Obama when Edwards dropped out. Sooner would simply have made the margins bigger. Delaware Dem is right on this one.

I suggest Wolfson listen to Zeppelin’s “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” and put it on repeat….

That’s good advice even for those who haven’t done anything as stupid as Wolfson.

Well, who knows? If Mr Edwards hadn’t entered the race, it might have left Mr Obama with more of the ABC vote, but if Mr Edwards had entered the race, and then been busted for his affair in, say, mid-December, maybe most of his female supporters would have gone to Hillary Clinton, as a protest against men screwing around.

We can play the speculation games all anyone wants; maybe if Mr Edwards hadn’t entered, Joe Biden would have gotten the white male vote.

OK, OK, I know: that’s simply too far-out to ever believe.

Really? Because her husband didn’t screw around.

Anyway, luv all this talk about penises. It’s just great.
