Quarterbacks Don’t Matter

With all this talk about Bret Favre going to play for the Jets I think we should all remember that Quarterbacks have little to no influence on how a team does.

A football teams winning or losing is based on long-term macro cycles of recruiting and scheduling. While a quarterback playing well or playing poorly gets all the attention in the press, what most people don’t see is that teams win or lose based on literally thousands of factors that the quarteback does not control.

For example, when Farve was playing in Green Bay for years he was the beneficiary of a positive playing cycle.  He was simply in the right place in the right time.

Conversely, when it looked like Donovan McNabb was punking out  over the past few years, he was really just the hapless victim of a down cycle.

All the talk about completions, interceptions, leadership is all just sportswriter hocus-pocus. The truth is quarterbacks don’t matter.
