And he tries to disassociate himself from the Republican Party as well.
Copeland also attempted to distance himself from his Democratic opponent by saying he, unlike Denn, would be capable of operating separately from the elected governor.
In a news release, Copeland described himself as an “independent voice” for lieutenant governor, and separate from the party. In his statement, Copeland emphasized the separation of the lieutenant governor’s and governor’s offices.
“Citizens expect you to work with the governor — to serve by their side when they are working for policies that truly help the people of Delaware,” Copeland said in the statement. “So yes, no matter who is governor, I will work with him to do what’s best for Delaware.”
Wow. These statements are just devoid of any confidence that Retired Judge Bill Lee can win. So Copeland is covering his bases by saying he will be able to work with Markell or Carney as an “independent voice.” Joining Lee under the bus is the Delaware Republican Party, when Copeland says he will be separate of his party.
And that is hysterical. He is the REPUBLICAN MINORITY LEADER in the Senate. He is the Delaware Republican Party. Indeed, isn’t Copeland the future of the Republican Party?
Politically, what Copeland is doing is trying to make himself palpatable to those voting Democratic for Governor so that they will split tickets. To do that, he has to make voters forget that he is a Republican, because the voters simply do not like Republicans in this day and age.
