State Treasurer Jack Markell’s campaign for governor won the endorsement Aug. 29 of the Cape Gazette.
The newspaper, which has a well-earned reputation for its thorough coverage of Southeastern Sussex County, praised Markell’s bold, Democratic proposals to solve the problems facing Delaware.
“Faced with serious budget problems, the loss of large employers and discouraging trends in public education, new thinking and new solutions are in order,” the paper said in an editorial published today. “The old way of doing business in Delaware no longer offers the right tools in a changing world that requires agility, creativity and fast-shifting innovation.”
“Delaware needs an independent, forward-thinking, decisive and market-savvy leader who can take the uncertainty and fear out of moving forward aggressively. Jack is well-prepared to play that role and offers a clear – and the best – choice for Delaware.”
The paper also drew sharp contrast between Markell’s bold plans to take Delaware in a new direction and the record of the Minner-Carney administration on a host of issues.
“John Carney and Jack Markell know we must strengthen our state’s educational system,” the editorial said. “Carney, however, has been part of the state’s top level of government for eight years, and still we lag behind other states spending less. Our highways are congested, and too many waterways are polluted – including our own Inland Bays. It’s time for fresh and more forward thinking.”
