This talking head is a repub operative who was clearly impressed by Obama’s speech last night AND was just as clearly overwhelmed by what it means for the state of play.  I thought that his concluding statement, “whoever didn’t get picked for Republican VP today may be a lucky Republican”, would be interesting to think about today.

  1. Benjamin says:

The more I read about Palin, the more I am astounded,

McCain never interviewed her and had met her only once in February before choosing her.

    IS HE INSANE ?

  2. pandora says:

Yes, he is insane. My brother-in-law, a republican who I enjoy debating with, just called and said that the election is over and McCain lost. He said that Palin was a political pick and that given McCain’s age we could end up with a VP completely unprepared to be President. (His words, not mine) He then went on to say that while he can’t stand Biden at least he’s fit for the oval office. And finally he added… Is McCain nuts? He’s just turned the general election into a debate on abortion. (Again his words.) BTW, my brother-in-law lives in Arizona.

  3. mike w. says:

Or we could get Obama and get an actual CANDIDATE who’s completely unprepared to be President.

Obama attacking McCain’s veep on being “inexperienced” is laughable.

  4. Ridonkulous says:

    Pandora,

    Try the extra absorbent ones.

    Thanks much!

  5. cassandra_m says:

It is Insane — the pick was all cynical political tactic (is anyone talking about this woman’s qualifications to be President or are they talking about the political tactics involved with this pick, I ask you?) and forces the McCain camp to abandon the experience argument, abandon the celebrity argument (anyone seen the Vogue cover pics and interview?), abandon change you can believe in (the woman comes with her own Republican ethics issues, which I guess are standard issue these days).

Republican friends of mine have been calling all day and they are gobsmacked by this. One went so far as to say that McCain told everyone that he was no longer serious about contending (this friend is now thinking about Bob Barr now, oy).

  6. Unstable Isotope says:

Obama talked about judgment. He made his case tonight. McCain also talked about judgment – and his first judgment is to pick Gov. Palin as his VP.

  7. Unstable Isotope says:

What Vogue cover? I’m unfamiliar with this. I’ve been getting messages today as well from my Republican friends that are flabbergasted. They can’t believe that McCain has abandoned his experience issue, probably his most potent.

  8. Joe Cass says:

    I thought that was Photoshopped!

Someone tell me this is April 1st.

  9. Unstable Isotope says:

Joe, that is photoshopped. Here’s a link to the pics:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/29/sarah-palin-mccains-vp-pi_n_122389.html

  10. Unstable Isotope says:

McCain’s choice looks even stranger now. Apparently they’ve only met once, in February. She was apparently a Romney supporter. Can it be any more obvious that it was strictly a political choice?

  11. cassandra_m says:

The Vogue photo spread and interview are real and I’m correcting the Cover statement I made because I can’t find anything that doesn’t seem photoshopped as Joe Cass said. But this seems to be an exerpt of the Vogue thing.

  12. Created Equal says:

Gosh, Paris Hilton actually might have been a more serious candidate than this. At least she’s successful and can handle the media and looks great on the cover of a mag.

Palin looks like the proverbial breeding female in a puppy mill. And where are her credentials, has she ever even been to the Capitol Building? I wonder…

  13. Ridonkulous says:

CE, are you sure you aren’t DV?

  14. selander says:

There’s actually some interesting local news today, too. The first newspaper endorsement came out today in the Gov. primary:

    http://capegazette.com/pages/editoral.html

  15. selander says:

McCain could still have made history by picking Governor Jodi Rell of CT, who has 4 years experience as a Governor, about 10 years experience as a Lt. Governor, several terms in a state legislature and a 70% approval rating in a solidly blue state.

And she’s a moderate that might actually appeal to other moderates.

  16. Ridonkulous says:

Yes, but Connecticut is either the armpit of Massachusetts or the asscrack of New York.

  17. Created Equal says:

Ridonkulous, Yeah, sometimes I get these feelings like I could be, I don’t know. The Dark Side has it’s benefits. But all in all I suppose flirting with an idea does not make one become that which you despise. I mean we all a have dreamt of robbing a bank at least once, but do we? No, the majority of us show a little restraint. We forget that one time when we were drunk and we mistook our best friend’s dog Tinky for our girlfriend and we move on. And that one confusing time when we were turned on slapping the Quater back on the butt after football practise. And you know, if we find ourselves in an odd position, we have fun, it hurts a little but we move on. We all have those DV days, when they come, and Heck, I can understand why it’s good to be a Republican, then I remember I used protection, a cry a little and I wash it all off in the shower.

  18. Ridonkulous says:

Yep. That confirms it. Delaware’s Most Asinine Life Form….in the “flesh”.

  19. Created Equal says:

    You love it. Ja!

  20. Joe Cass says:

DJ SNOWATCH! Good lord I miss you man! Hope your having great success, better be worth leaving us alone with Jenson

  21. JG says:

Does experience really matter all that much? I don’t think it does. Here’s a little data to back up my theory:

    http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2008/Info/experience.html

  22. pandora says:

JG, That was fascinating. Thanks for the link.

  23. If you guys aren’t watching Real Time w/ Bill Maher (season premiere tonight), then you should. Gov. Tim Kaine is FUCKING TEARING apart Palin and McCain. Friggin’ hilarious!

  24. mike w. says:

“(is anyone talking about this woman’s qualifications to be President or are they talking about the political tactics involved with this pick, I ask you?”

Give me a break. Obama supporters have NO standing to be questioning Palin’s experience.

  25. jason330 says:

    Yes they do.

  26. mike w. says:

I must say the response from the McCain camp is excellent.

“It is pretty audacious for the Obama campaign to say that Governor Palin is not qualified to be Vice President. She has a record of accomplishment that Senator Obama simply cannot match. Governor Palin has spent her time in office shaking up government in Alaska and actually achieving results — whether it’s taking on corruption, passing ethics reform or stopping wasteful spending and the ‘bridge to nowhere.’ Senator Obama has spent his time in office running for President.”

And really, do you Dems want to get into a pissing match about whether your CANDIDATE is more experienced than McCain’s VP? That’s just made of fail. Given his own gross lack of experience Obama would be smart to drop the “she’s inexperienced” rhetoric. It’s going to backfire on him.

Palin has run a state, and a basketball team. What has Obama run? Foreign policy experience? Obama shouldn’t talk, since he has NONE. And remember that Alaska is in close proximity to two other nations.

  27. pandora says:

Um… Palin was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it.

  28. jason330 says:

Palin has run a state, and a basketball team.

LOL! What a joke you are Mike. Keep bringing the funny.

  29. mike w. says:

I was referencing her being the point guard on her Championship winning high school basketball team.

As a point guard, you don’t lead a team to a State Championship without exhibiting great leadership. Besides, as someone who played throughout middle school and high school I found it to be an interesting tidbit about her.

  30. jason330 says:

    Oh my sides…please stop…

  31. Von Cracker says:

    None, Mike…..Really?

Hyperbole, while in some cases is effective, just makes you seem silly.

  32. Von Cracker says:

    Ha!

Seriously, are you saying the head of Law Review at Harvard pales in comparison to a high school basketball captain, as it pertains to leadership qualities?

    Ha!

  33. Unstable Isotope says:

That’s what desperation looks like, folks. Basketball team!

  34. selander says:

My point with Gov. Rell is more that McCain can no longer question as effectively Obama’s readiness to be President, because he’s put “a heartbeat away” somebody with less traditional experience than even Obama.

Had he picked Rell, he could have more credibly continued that line of attack.

Joe C – Thanks. Life is going really well.

    JG – Great link.

  35. anon says:

Am beginning to believe this deal with Palin went down weeks ago. Vogue magazine did a photoshoot of her supposedly to run in January.

It will be interesting to see if she is not on the cover in September!

Comparing this BA in journalism to a Harvard graduate is comparing apples to grapes.

Women are smarter than the republicans give them credit. This woman brings nothing to the campaign and how many MEN who live in rural america are going to vote for THIS woman with no knowledge or experience in economics, foreign policy, and freakin geography are actually gonna pull the lever?

She will do well at the convention, well scripted and dressed beautifully, but after that its crash and burn time.

  36. MJ says:

Could it be that Romney and Pawlenty, after watching Obama’s speech and the convention, and reading poll numbers, decided that they didn’t want to be tagged with the “loser” label when McSame goes down in flames in 65 days, thus setting themselves up to run in 2012? This was obviously a “tactical” decision by McSame to make a play for the P.U.M.A.’s, but I don’t believe that even the most diehard Hillary supporters are going to support a ticket that would turn the clock back on Roe v. Wade.

I don’t think that the Dems should take her lightly, but c’mon, the governor of Alaska who tried to get her ex brother-in-law fired because he supposedly shot a moose out of season? She’s a lightweight when it comes to the national scene.

And the argument that she has the same experience as Tim Kaine that the talking heads were warbling about yesterday, is laughable. Kaine was mayor of Richmond and Lt. Gov before becoming Governor of Virginia. Flo was an ice fisherman. No comparison.
