The Main Library in Philly is the host to a pretty amazing roundup of authors throughout the year, but they have two seasons of what they call the Philadelphia Lectures to help raise money for the Library. They have a very eclectic assortment of writers who come to speak — historians, poets, cooks, artists, scientists and science writers, fiction writers, graphic novelists as well as the political writers.
You can see the full lineup of writers this season (this shows both the free and the paid events) here (there are 4 pages or so of events). But since we are a political blog, I thought I would highlight a few events that Delaware Liberal readers may want to try to go to:
Thomas Frank – The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule September 16 at 7:30PM
Dexter Filkins – The Forever War October 14 at 7:30 PM (This one is Free.)
John Perkins – The Secret History of the American Empire: Economic Hit Men, Jackals, and How to Change the World October 28 at 7:30PM
Christopher Buckley – Supreme Courtship November 5 at 7:30PM (His Thank You For Not Smoking is one of the funniest novels I’ve ever read.)
I can only apologize that these aren’t closer to Wilmington, but what to do? I go to as many of these as I can during the year with some diehard reader buddies, but if you are not interested in the politics — Brian Green, E.O. Wilson, the 80th Anniversary Celebration of the OED and Toni Morrison are going to be highlights. I’ve tickets to Thomas Frank for the 16th — let me know if any of you go and I’ll look for you or we can have a drink afterwards!
