Polling Place Reports

Filed in National by on September 9, 2008

My polling place is the East Side Charter school off Rt. 13 in Wilmington.   I was the first voter there when the polls opened, although by the time I had finished voting, 4 more people were walking in.   There were three African American women outside wearing union shirts holding Carney signs saying “Carney for Jobs.”

I was unaware there was an elected position called “Jobs.”  I did not see it on the ballot.   I thought he was running for Governor.  But I digress.   I think these women were violating electioneering law, as they were only about 20 feet from the actual voting booth.  If I looked outside the curtain of the booth, I could see them.  Not that it matter, for the women were not really interested in campaigning for Carney.  They were talking friends and nonpolitical stuff as I passed by.   They didn’t encourage me to vote for Carney or anything.

So I voted.  Markell, Northington, Reed, Dunn, Coons, Cartier.

Please use this thread to report your experience or if  you had or have seen any problems or illegal activity.   Have a good voting day!

My voting place is the Quaker Hill Apartments at 2nd and Washington. I was there at 7:03 and there were 4 of us voting. No campaign folks were there yet, but when I left there was a gaggle of folks including a young person for Markell.

I voted: Markell, Northington, Coons, Baker, Walsh (who I am working for), Brown, Freel. No votes for Insurance Commissioner or 4th City Council.

  2. PBaumbach says:

I voted at Downes Elementary School (23rd RD, 6th SD), at 8am. There were about six campaign folks, including John Mackenzie. Everything seemed kosher.

I’ll be there working for Markell 10-1 and 4-8 (think of me when the heavens open up this afternoon).

  3. Jason330 says:

bill Dunn just stopped by Odessa fire hall to say hi.

  4. DelDem,

    Reed? Oh my…

  5. delawaredem says:

I am not happy with that vote, Mike. But as paired against Stewart and Savage? Ugh.

  6. Will work for food says:

“They didn’t encourage me to vote for Carney or anything.”

A pint of Seagrams only gets sign-holders! Now a fifth would get more vocal poll supporters!

  7. Joe C says:

At Einsenberg Elem. I counted four PAID EMPLOYEES wearing the Carney Jobs shitrts, 2 Markell supporters , one Bill Bell kid and a Gordon groupie I traded insults with her because I declined to “consider” her guy. Fun!

  8. delawaredem says:

I wonder if that was Liz Allen.

  9. Susan Regis Collins says:

I got to my polling place shortly after 7…there were quite a few voters and a line that was mainly due to the fact Dept. of Election workers didn’t know what they were doing.

As voting is secret I will reveal I skipped several races (poor choices) and bulleted one council at large candidate.

  10. Unstable Isotope says:

I voted already. I was working as a greeter for Bill Dunn at Thurgood Marshall, along with a Markell volunteer and a volunteer from Planned Parenthood. Pretty good turnout so far. I’m going back soon for the lunch rush.

  11. pandora says:

Lots of voters at Park View on Broom and 18th Street.

  12. liberalgeek says:

I was at Olive B Loss Elem at about 7:45. The Markell people standing outside said that there had been “about a hundred” people so far, but you know how those Markell people lie… 🙂

My votes have been sealed. I have buried them in a shallow grave somewhere in New Castle County…

  13. John Tobin says:

I have been at three polling places this morning.
Markell had a greeter at each. I did not see a Carney greeter at any:
    Highlands Elementary(Wilmington) 7-9:15 am,
    Keene Elementary(Bear) 10:30-11:00 am and
    First Presbyterian (Newark) 11:25-11:45 am.
Mostly local candidate greeters, especially Highlands where by 9:15 am voters had to walk through a gauntlet due to the number of city races (council & mayor).
Markell’s mother & father were at First Presbyterian.
Light turnout at all three -which may not pick up much this afternoon with the rain.
No Republican greeters at any, although there was a guy at Highlands putting up Bill Lee signs.

  14. JohnnyX says:

My polling place is the Nur Temple near the 13/40 split in New Castle. I got there just before 11.

When I got there, it was beginning to rain and there was one Markell lady standing under an umbrella. Without realizing it, I parked next to a minivan with two ladies supporting Mike Miller in it – one of which rolled down the window and handed me a Mike Miller pamphlet as I got out of the car.

When I came back out of the polling place, in addition to those previously described there was a lady with a Tom Gordon shirt and a guy with a Bill Bell shirt. I don’t know whether they were in their cars earlier or if they had just arrived.

All in all it was virtually dead there, then again I’d imagine mid-morning is that way at many polling places.

I’m not going to reveal all my votes but will tell you all that since I’m in County Council district 12 I proudly voted for Tom Scherer to try to oust Bill Bell.

  15. DavidV says:

Just got back from a Sussex polling place. 1 Markell greater, no one else in sight, including voters.

  16. Another Mike says:

I voted around 8:15 a.m. at the Captain’s Deck condos (or whatever they’re called) on Gov. Printz Blvd. There were two Markell volunteers handing out literature; neither looked to be older than 25. I told them to keep their stuff, he already had my vote.

Only one or two other people voting at that time. I was in and out in a minute. No other pols were represented, but when I got to Philadelphia Pike and Harvey Road, there were four or five union members on the corner holding a big Carney sign wearing the yellow t-shirts.

  17. Mommychicky says:

I voted at Forwood Elementary at about 8:30 am – there was a Bryon Short-wearing woman and someone handing out Markel literature. The biggest thing I noted (and I see the same thing ever time) is what awful sourpusses the election workers are. Geez, I say good morning to you and bring my cute kid, the least you could do would be to greet me back…

  18. pandora says:

Do you think election workers are instructed to be sourpusses? I’m leaning that way!

  19. delawaredem says:

My election workers were fine. I was the first to arrive at the East Side Charter School, just a little before 7 am, and they were not finished setting up.

I told them don’t worry, I know I am early as I always am. They all smiled and rushed to get finished and were very helpful.
