George Will get’s it right occasionally; today is that day
Read the entire thing.
Under the pressure of the financial crisis, one presidential candidate is behaving like a flustered rookie playing in a league too high. It is not Barack Obama.
yowsa!
For McCain, politics is always operatic, pitting people who agree with him against those who are “corrupt” or “betray the public’s trust,” two categories that seem to be exhaustive — there are no other people.
Just what we need more leadership defined in only black or white.
So, is not McCain’s party now conducting the most leftist administration in American history? The New Deal never acted so precipitously on such a scale. Treasury Secretary Paulson, asked about conservative complaints that his rescue program amounts to socialism, said, essentially: This is not socialism, this is necessary. That non sequitur might be politically necessary, but remember that government control of capital is government control of capitalism.
Hmmm, where oh where is that strapping young buck when we need him?
It is arguable that, because of his inexperience, Obama is not ready for the presidency. It is arguable that McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency. Unreadiness can be corrected, although perhaps at great cost, by experience. Can a dismaying temperament be fixed?
Who are the nattering naybobs of negativity these days?
How much trouble is McCain in when George Will turns against him? This is bad, bad, bad for McCain.
In other news, good on CNN:
Obviously, George Will and CNN are sexist!
pandora
I’d agree, but Will turned against various Bush policies over the years and nobody on the Right listened.
See, the key here is that Will is an intellectual (a conservative intellectual, but an intellectual nonetheless) and McCain has moved into his populist revolt stage–the people who will follow him there could care less what any intellectual says, including one supposedly on their own side.
But Will, unlike McCain, is truly a Reagan Republican (and speechwriter). Oh, I have no doubt he’ll be banished – by his own – to David Gergen land.
Is loyalty a one-way street with republicans?
Not being one, I wouldn’t know.
I know you’re not a republican. I read your blog! 😉
Pandora – Sadly you’re probably right. The “Bush Conservatives” have taken hold of the Republican party these days.
How influential is Will? He is more of an ideologue than a partisan Republican, IMO. He would perhaps cause a splash if he endorsed Obama, though.
It appears that Mike W. is on the road to conversion from the reading of several of his post on the this blog
Conversion? I’ve never been a “Bush Conservative.” Hell, I’m not even a conservative on a whole host of issues.
Will might not be influential to regular folks….
but he is part of the beltway media and when people like him start turning it is a good sign, especially during an election.
I watched the hearings today and it seemed to me that the plan is to buy up worthless paper so that the banks and investment houses who made these bad loans to begin with will now have our 700 Billion Dollars to begin making loans again. Why not just keep the money and put the federal government in the banking business. then we can all go to Washington to borrow money for a car, home or a college eduction at a lower rate and avoid the middle man who fucked things up to begin with.
