Imagine George Bush cancels the 2008 elections for “security” reasons. Would Republicans put down their partisanship to join Democrats and independents in protesting that action through a general strike?

Specious question, but this conservative would be protesting as loud and as hard as he could, should that happen.

  2. anonone says:

    No.

  3. X Stryker says:

I was saying this last night to some friends. The next step after cancelling the debate will be cancelling the whole election. They just need one terrorist/Iran/made-up incident to make it happen.

And I’ll be out there on the streets if/when it does.

  4. jason330 says:

I disagree with you Lino. I think history shows that if Sean Hannity tells you to support Bush in the face of overwhleming evidence that the support is misplaced, you would do it.

Let’s hope you don’t need to be tested, because I’m sure you would fail.

  5. Disbelief says:

Didn’t Rudy try this after 9/11?

  6. pandora says:

I would hope Republicans would stand up, but I’m not sure about all of them – especially the most vocal.

They’d wrap canceling the election in the flag and serve it up with a big piece of bin Laden.

  7. cassandra m says:

Rudy floated a trial balloon of postponing the Mayoral election right after 9/11. New Yorkers weren’t having a bit of it.

  8. mike w. says:

“The next step after cancelling the debate will be cancelling the whole election.”

You’re kidding right? If McCain decided not to show up at the debates neither he nor Bush would have the authority to actually cancel them.

  9. anon says:

To make sure our democratic process continues as scheduled in a peaceful transition, we need to deploy Blackwater to provide security at all polling places.

  10. anon says:

If McCain decided not to show up at the debates neither he nor Bush would have the authority to actually cancel them.

    I still cannot parse this.

  11. Linoge says:

Righto. Because you know so very much about me. W00t for baseless ad hominems!

    You’re kidding right?

Tin-foil hat paranoia runs deep ’round here, along with BDS and RDS. Really, I am surprised this nonsensical post took so long in being written.

  12. Joanne Christian says:

And that people are really answering it…..

  13. mike w. says:

Linoge – It is paranoia. “OH NOES, BUSH IS GOING TO CANCEL THE ELECTIONS.”

    get a grip people.

  14. Susan Regis Collins says:

I believe this administration has taken away soooo many of our civil rights that killing our right to vote would be a walk in the Rose Garden for them.

  15. RSmitty says:

I’ll bite. There is a small part (that nagging back-of-my-mind type of feeling) of me that actually expects this to happen. That’s all rooted in my distrust of CheneyBush that’s existed ever since they paired up.

  16. anonone says:

They don’t need to cancel the election – they already know how to “fix” them. That is the far greater and likelier danger.

  17. jason330 says:

    Linoge,

I know your type. You’d fail utterly to step up and be an American. Indeed, you already have.

  18. mike w. says:

OK but how would they really prevent us from voting? Declare martial law and post the military at all polling places to forcibly keep people from casting votes?

  19. mike w. says:

“I know your type. You’d fail utterly to step up and be an American. Indeed, you already have.”

Why? because he refuses to drink the liberal kool-aid and support “The One?”

  20. jason330 says:

Spoken like the true failure you are.

  21. pandora says:

How could they stop the vote? Unplug the Diebold voting machines. Or send in mobs of “angry” 20 something male Republicans. Just sayin’.

  22. RSmitty says:

Not set up the polling locations at all? That would be pretty effective.

Do I really think they would actually “cancel” the elections? No. Is that little gremlin on my shoulder telling me CheneyBush has the nerve to pull something like this off? Yes.

Do I think they would “defer” them to a time that the country “is more stable and better suited to handle change?” That I see as more of a possibility.

I certainly believe much more than not that the elections will proceed as normal, though.

Be realistic, though. This administration truly has made toilet paper out of our Constitution.

  23. anon says:

If there was a clock for martial law (like the one for nuclear war), then we are a few clicks closer to midnight.

  24. mike w. says:

“Or send in mobs of “angry” 20 something male Republicans. Just sayin’.”

Saying what exactly Pandora? Clearly something utterly moronic.

  25. Linoge says:

I know your type. You’d fail utterly to step up and be an American. Indeed, you already have.

    *giggles uncontrollably*

You folks are better than stand-up, I swear. First the baseless ad hominems, and now the swiss-cheese stereotypes followed up by yet another baseless ad hominem.

Way to show your true colors. Bravo, and please, encore!

  26. jason330 says:

    Okay, if you insist.

Right now you have that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach that you get when your fraudulence has been exposed, but you are not sure what your next step is.

You know you can’t admit that I’m right, but on the other hand you can’t deny that I’ve unmasked you for the frightened little authoritarian that you are.

I’d feel sorry for you right now, but you’ve long ago given away any claims to be treated with compassion.

  27. mike w. says:

    “your fraudulence has been exposed…
You know you can’t admit that I’m right, but on the other hand you can’t deny that I’ve unmasked you for the frightened little authoritarian that you are. ”

Fraudulence? (regarding what?) Frightened little authoritarian?

You pull these stupid, baseless ad hominems out of thin air. Sometimes I’m truly baffled at the thought processes that must be going on to come up with stuff that’s complete nonsense.

  28. Steve Newton says:

Go to abebooks.com and find a novel by Michael Kurland called The Last President, written in the late 1970s as a fictionalization of what might have happened had Nixon chosen that kind of response to Watergate. Of course, they had to change all the names, but you’ll recognize all the characters.

The President cannot cancel the election; and if he tried, the law enforcement and military elements he’d need to enforce it would simply disobey him 90% of the time.
