Palin Could Very Well Kick Joe’s Ass If He Is Not On His Game

Filed in National by on October 1, 2008

This BBC article does a great job summing up Nit Wit Palin’s considerable debating strengths and when you add the fact that Gwen Ifill will be 100% in Palin’s corner – this could be a tough night for Biden.

Here is a clip, but read the whole thing.

“The one thing I found during the [2006] debates was no matter how knowledgeable her opponents were on the issues, it didn’t matter,” Mr Halcro (a former debate opponent) told BBC News.

“She has an amazing ability to turn a 45 second answer into a folksy story… she’s never been forced to know the issues.”

Mr Halcro said Mrs Palin’s biggest strength is her ability to “fill the room with her presence”. (snip)

“There were many times the third candidate and I would walk off stage and shake our heads,” Mr Halcro said. “It wasn’t policy it was populism.”

Whatever it was, Mrs Palin beat her opponents, garnering 48% of the vote, while Democrat candidate Tony Knowles received 40% and Independent Halcro received 9%.

“I don’t think anyone could have beat her,” Mr Halcro said. “It wasn’t about how much she knew about the issues. People didn’t care about her experience, they just thought, ‘This is the drink of water we need’.”

With the bar placed so friggin low – she could kick ass.

Not sure, J. The bar may be low (and that’s been well established) but I’m not sure she can win this on “personality” and folksy stories. Her bar may be low, but the publics’ (given the economy) is high right now. Follow up questions should give her the most problem, especially if she dodged the question from the beginning.

If people weren’t so worried right now she may have received a pass. Now… I’m not so sure.

Advice to Joe: Please, let Sarah be Sarah. Let her talk and talk. She won’t be on that stage alone, and she’s not in Alaska anymore. Comparisons will be made.

I agree Pandora–that voice is kinda hard on the nervous column too–Joe’s verbosity may be a welcome relief.

  3. pandora says:

The Gibson and Couric interviews (and SNL) changed the meme around Palin from experience to intelligence.

Sarah will have to prove she has a brain. We’ve moved past the resume stage.

  4. h. says:

She won’t have an audience, it’s Dukes of Hazard night on T.V. Land.

    Back to the Bush Leagues

I stole that title from TPM.

So when it is all done, they send her off to speak only to the VRWC, who will be delighted with a cracking wise chick who will lie about Obama, the media and anything else on cue. She will top it all off with stories about making moosemush for the kiddies and the VRWC will swoon at the shiny. Most important though, is to appear in friendly venues only, who will be certain that there are no hard questions.

  6. no way….

either the times or msnbc just had a thing that studied her debating skills.

she often never used up her alotted time and used a lot of phrases over and over to fill in her gaps.

she will offer nothing but talking points and if she has to ad lib she is done

Exactly the point I was making last night.. the bar has been set too low. But I hope the Obama/Biden folks know this.

“and when you add the fact that Gwen Ifill will be 100% in Palin’s corner -”

    Please tell me you’re joking………

I think that Biden is taking this very seriously. I think this will be THE most watched of the debates. Hopefully, the Biden team has several strategies in place – one if she’s an attack dog, one if she’s not answering the questions and one if she’s incoherent. It should be fun to watch!

  10. anon says:

Hey, Joe can play the expectations game too. Undecides and low-info voters are expecting him to be a wild-eyed liberal attack dog. So if he is statesmanlike and gentlemanly he can win them over.

  11. mike w. says:

“So if he is statesmanlike and gentlemanly he can win them over.”

    Good luck with that.

  12. Mike Protack says:

Gwen Ifill is writing a book on race, politics and Sen Obama.

The book comes out Jan 20th, she is not in Palin’s corner.

  13. cassandra_m says:

    See what I mean?

    Talking points right on cue.

Still clueless, but right on cue.

    Mike the Loser:

She may not be in Palin’s corner like you repubs have come to expect of the lap dog repub sycophants that pose as very serious journalists. However, it wouldn’t surprise me to see her behaving as one, too.

  15. mike w. says:

Cass – Again, it’s not a clueless talking point.

If this were a court case and she was the judge she’d have to recuse herself for something like this.
