Biggest Upset Watch (The House)

Filed in Delaware by on October 24, 2008

The biggest upsets of election night in the House races will be…

1) Mike Barbieri (D) defeats entrenched incumbent Terry Spence (R)

Sure Spence may have a Markell sign in his front yard, but this heavily democratic district will be represented by a real Democrat.  I have learned to heed the words of the one who walks at night.

2) Earl Jaques (D) defeats entrenched incumbent Vince Lofink (R)

The Bear-Glasgow area is another Democratic district.   2nd time is the charm for Jaques.

3) Brad Bennett (D) defeats entrenched drag queen Donna Stone (R)

Stone has not hurt herself as much as Lofink or Wagner – but c’mon…time to take out the trash.

4) Darryl Scott (D) defeats entrenched incumbent Nancy Wagner (R)

Wagner created a state funded job for her goofball husband. Plus she is a Republican in a district that will have a HUGE Dem turnout this year.  B’uh bye Nancy.

5) Rebecca Walker (D) defeats entrenched incumbent Dick Cathcart (R)

The 9th is a Democratic district, but Cathcart has heard Walker’s footsteps everyday for two years and he has helped himself in the off season more than Wagner, Stone, Lofink or Spence.  This would be a huge upset.

UPDATE: Redneck-hick-stupid-drunk-Sussex Countians and some regular Sussex Countians will vote for John Atkins, who will win, but I don’t consider that an upset since he is a Republican running in a Republican district.

    5) Rebecca Walker (D) defeats entrenched incumbent Dick Cathcart (R)

    😆

  2. RSmitty says:

She’d have to first stop listening to the wild-eyed angry people that had it in for Cathcart since he beat developer-darling Roberts in ’97.

  3. George says:

I think the Walker race is a sleeper and we’ll be saying goodnight to Cathcart. Nice rundown.

  4. RSmitty says:

No, not a sleeper. No one thinks that is a shoe-in at all for Cathcart. I think Jason’s slant on it being a major upset is based on the noteworthy acceptance of many non-R’s of Mr. Cathcart, not any misconceptions.

Of course, if you want to base it on signs disappearing, then I totally give that to Walker backers.

  5. jason330 says:

If Walker wins it means Republicans are having a very very very very very bad day everywhere.

  6. jason330 says:

Always with the signage complaints. I wish someone would steal some Sturdevant (sp?) signs.

  7. RSmitty says:

You know, tho…we’ve talked about crap like this more than once. Vance Neck RD is a particularly bad stretch, the part that parallels Rt 1, kind of where Sugar Loaf Farms is located…near Appletree Lane, which is a coinky-dink if you look into it a bit closer.

  8. RSmitty says:

I wish someone would steal some Sturdevant (sp?) signs.

What? You want one for your wall at home?

  9. jason330 says:

I doubt Bill Bell does the dirty work himself. Rather he has a squad of flying monkeys that swarm out of his dread Castle just prior to the cock’s crow.

  10. RSmitty says:

Bill Bell lives there? Shoot, I was trying to hint that it was old man Whithers.

If you have encountered him lately with the un-holy developer-darling bunch hell-bent on making Cathcart lose, you’d very well know why I called it quite a coinky-dink. Seriously, I don’t think the man himself is doing it, but if he was, the risk-reward with that, if caught, is so horribly stacked against him.

  11. Unstable Isotope says:

    I think you’re right about 1, 2 and 4. I don’t know anything about 3 and it would be a big surprise for 5.

  12. George says:

“signs disappearing ” – puh-lease. Save it. A lame distraction and a tired excuse… which is all the Delaware GOP has now.

  13. donviti says:

    anyone seen the

    “therealjackmarkel.com” signs anywhere?

I saw one today on the corner of 141 and rt 100.

  14. RSmitty says:

George…it’s such a small part of any campaign, but just a very annoying issue more than anything else. What level of impact do I give it? A bunch of petty bullshit that lower-level supporters engage in, thinking they are doing the right thing. Of course, over my years, I have found that those that defend/dismiss it with more emphasis tend to be part of the annoyance.

    Good luck with your candidate.

I wish someone would steal those.

  16. MJ says:

Jason, tell us how you really feel about the folks in the 41st (I’m actually in the 14th)? I’m as conflicted as anyone over Atkins running as a Democrat, but his opponent in the primary was not all there. This is akin to letting Joe Lieberman still caucus with the Senate Dems and keep his chairmanship, despite his support for McSame. Is Atkins perfect – no. Will his victory help the Dems take control of the state House – yes. Can Pete Schwartzkopf keep him in line – let’s hope.

  17. donviti says:

I’m as conflicted as anyone over Atkins running as a Democrat

conflicted? is the other guy a murderer?

  18. George says:

I have to say – I think John Atkins is a jerk, but I love people from the 41st as a general rule.

And Pete Schwartzkopf has to be one of the most genuinely funny people in public life in this state… as down-to-earth as they come.

  19. nospam says:

    Don’t write off the South!

You’re 99 percent sure going to see an upset down Ocean View-way, where Gerald Hocker gets his butt kicked by Kay Ryan.

And the Hudson-Lee race in the 40th is going to be a hell of a lot closer than might appear at first glance.

It’d be neat to see Jerry Semper knock off Dan Short in Seaford, but that’s not going to happen. Semper’s a real good egg, though, and the Dems need to make sure he stays in the game.

  20. Hocker will keep his seat. He’s like a god down there. I hear his ads on air constantly. Not just political ads, but his grocery store. Apparently, people really dig the guy.

  21. RSmitty says:

Hocker has a grocery store? Oh man, (snark) would you really want to buy food from a guy named Hocker? What’s his bakery special? “Custard” Pie? I hear he makes a mean New England Clam Chowder, too…thick and chunky (/snark).

    OK, I’m done.

  22. Unstable Isotope says:

Yeah, I’ve seen the realjackmarkell.com signs. There’s one on 202 near the I95.
