Howard Dean Leaving DNC

Filed in National by on November 10, 2008

Very sad, but not unexpected.

The rumors seem to have Claire McCaskell leading the DNC with Steve Hildebrand as her second. But the 50 State strategy seems to be new organizing bedrock and will stay on for awhile.

I remember when the elected and pundit Dem elites went batshit crazy (repubs laughed and laughed) when the grassroots elected Dean as party chair, and two successful election cycles later we are able to say Dr. Dean Was Right. Again. Hope that the next leadership crew can command the kind of loyalty that Dean did.

Thank you Howard!

Dr. Dean ROCKED!!! He will be missed.

    Please make it so Skydad!!

  2. Unstable Isotope says:

Thank you so much Howard Dean. Doesn’t it seem strange that people laughed about the 50-state strategy?

Claire McCaskill is a man? Who knew?

  4. anon says:

    Newt on Dean (2005):

“I think if (Democrats) have a true death wish, he’d be the perfect guy to go with,” former House Majority Leader Newt Gingrich told Fox News last month.

    Run, Newt, run!!

And who can forget Carville vs Dean after the 2006 elections?

There’s a reason why you are a cable TV pundit, Carville.

He who screams last screams best.

    And then there’s Begala:

He says it’s a long-term strategy. But what he has spent it on, apparently, is just hiring a bunch of staff people to wander around Utah and Mississippi and pick their nose. That’s not how you build a party.

  7. El Somnambulo says:

El Somnambulo’s favorite baseball executive, Branch Rickey, who brought Jackie Robinson to the major leagues, once said “Luck is the residue of design.”

Barack Obama was fortunate that a 50-state strategy was in place. The strategy was Howard Dean’s.

    The residue of design, indeed.

  8. Dominique says:

Do you think Flora and Fauna will miss Meriweather when she takes on her new role at the DNC? How will Sleeping Beauty get by with just two fairies?

Seriously, does this mean Dean will be picked for Secty of Health & Human Services?

  9. pandora says:

Hmmm… how is that fairy reference any different than what you’ve been writing in defense of Palin?

Is calling someone Miss Meriweather any different than calling them Caribou Barbie? Just saying.

  10. Dominique says:

You’re right, P. Now that I think about it, she’s more like Fauna than Meriweather. She looks and sounds like her. Every single appearance she ever made on Obama’s behalf was replete with her trademark Fauna-like starry eyes, shit-eating grin and insipid giggle. Seriously, if this senate thing doesn’t work out, she’s got a great career ahead of her in Disneyworld.

Apart from the uncanny physical resemblance, McCaskill strikes me as having about the same depth as Fauna. Of course, the media would never call her out for being a doddering goofball what with her being a Democrat and all. I guess Palin’s an easier target because of her accent and her folksy vernacular (ahem…elitism, anyone?).

Seriously, Palin had the balls to run against – and beat – an incumbent from her own party. She then had the spine to confront corruption – again, in her own party. What has McCaskill ever done that could be considered the least bit courageous? Her teenage daughter essentially pressured her into supporting a presidential candidate, for shit’s sake.

Anyone who thinks McCaskill’s got any real substance probably shouldn’t be talking smack about Palin. Just saying.

  11. pandora says:

    Aren’t these your words, Dom?

“Aunt Lala – You are the embodiment of what I have found to be most offensive during the entire election season. The dismissal of women running for office – especially BY OTHER WOMEN – has essentially negated any progress toward equality that women have made over the past 30 years. You and your ilk are disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourselves.”

Is sexism your issue, or not?

  12. Dominique says:

No. My issue is strong women being denigrated while weak women are exalted. I just commented on this in the Matt Taibbi thread.

  13. pandora says:

I disagree. And I shudder to think of what you would have written about Palin had Hillary been the Dem nominee. I find your approach to sexism situational.

  14. cassandra_m says:

I don’t even know why you try, Pandora. McCaskill is an accomplished lawyer and prosecutor who was also governor of her state. She won a bruising election for Senate against a well liked repub and yet Palin — she of the 6 colleges to get a degree — is somehow the more accomplished.

This is the real idiocy of the kind of affinity politics that Palin is so good at — it makes a fetish object out of sheer mediocrity. And is a real insult to women with real resumes.

  15. Dominique says:

Actually, I’m pretty sure she wasn’t governor. I could be wrong, tho.

Cassandra, there’s really no need to be condescending. My barometer is simply different than yours. I don’t give a shit how many important jobs a person has had or how quickly they graduated from school. I happen to admire people (in this case, women) who make a little noise and stand up for what they believe in. I don’t think demure, well-behaved women do a lot to advance the chances of women actually being viewed as equals. That’s just me, tho. You and Pandora can feel free to form your own beliefs and opinions without me looking down my nose at them (or you).

  16. cassandra_m says:

That was alot to say that you want to be able to admire women who make you feel good about yourself and not those with a raft of accomplishments that likely threaten you.

No one gets a resume like McCaskill’s by being demure. And Palin — who doesn’t need to do anything besides make you feel better about yourself – has a puny resume which likely adds to her charm.

Whatever blows your skirt up, I guess. But don’t think that you can denigrate one woman’s resume to make a far less accomplished one look better. Or at least do it on your own blog where they won’t know any better.

  17. El Somnambulo says:

At the risk of hijacking this thread (which has run its course thanks to Dominique, who El Somnambulo liked better when she was Christine O’Donnell), would the Powers-That-Be please can the Feliz Navidad ambience? El Somnambulo HATES Navidad, with or without the Feliz.

And certainly with Jose Feliciano. If only he could see, he would see how ill that stupid song makes El Somnambulo, who is out gunning for Burl Ives at this instant.
