Ross Sounds Pathetic
In today’s News Journal we get the official Republican reaction to Gov.-elect Markell’s naming of Republican Dennis Rochford as his Chief of Staff:
State Republican Chairman Tom Ross said he isn’t surprised Markell opted for a Republican to work in his office during difficult financial times.
“The Democratic leadership has caused some serious financial strains,” Ross said.
Ross noted another tie between Rochford and Markell: “It’s interesting that he would pick someone who has also run a very hard campaign against John Carney.”
LOL.
First, Tom… the campaign is over. The Delaware GOP that you lead is so utterly discredited and disgusting to Delaware’s voters that even if they believed your song and dance about the global economic crisis being the fault of Delaware’s Democrats, they still chose the Democrats in a landslide. So perhaps you want to get a new message, because what you are selling people ain’t buying.
Second, notice how Ross sows the seeds of disunity. “Oh Noes!! Markell is picking Carney’s first opponent to be his chief of staff. How very innnnnnnnteresting.” It might be interesting if it were a close race between Rochford and Carney. But it wasn’t. Carney kicked Rochford’s ass in a Markellian style: 62% to 38%. If anyone should be bitter about that election, it is Rochford, not Carney or anyone supporting Carney.
Ross needs to get a new schtick.
I guess he had to say something, but you are right…
lame.
I thought the same thing: What an ungracious asshat. Notice that Daniello — the one who just got the thumb in his eye — managed to say something appropriate. It takes real talent to look like a bigger jag-off than Daniello. Congrats, Tom.
Did anybody catch this? Markell is gonna be up to midnight.
“ABC News has learned that Delaware’s “newly elected Democratic governor is planning to take the oath of office at 12:01 a.m. ET on Jan. 20, 2009, making it possible for him to name Vice President-elect Joe Biden’s replacement to the United States Senate. Whether Governor-elect Jack Markell (D) gets to name Biden’s Senate replacement will ultimately turn on whether the Vice President-elect makes good on his stated intention to wait until the moment he becomes Vice President to resign from the U.S. Senate.”
Unfortunately, Delaware’s next Senator loses the opportunity for significant seniority doing it this way.

My fingers are crossed that he does not appoint Bill Lee.
Interestingly, Dana G. makes the case that Beau should not go to Iraq.

I’m available for appointment. Plus, you get rid of me for two years.
I think Christine should get the nod because she was second.
As for the Ross statement, it was not his finest moment. It was a time for bipartisanship then maybe he would actually appoint a couple more Republicans. It seems like the only way we will get in government the next two years is by the good graces of Democrats.
Nevertheless, you seem a little too harsh. He didn’t go that far off. He was just trying to be cute and catchy for the press. It is not easy to have an answer for everything on a moment’s notice.
Someone explain it to me then – why did Markell pick Rochford? Is he the best person for the job?
I agree Ross’s comments just sound like sour grapes.
Yes, he is. He fits well with the governor-elect. Markell is a quirky left of center guy and Rochford is a quirky right of center guy, but they agree on a lot of fiscal issues and business development.
I like the pick because it means that unlike the previous Democrat administrations, Markell would rather pick a Delawarean even if a Republican than an out of stater who happens to be a D.
Markell is determined to get this state back on track. Everyone needs to relax. Gov. Markell sets the policy. The chief of staff doesn’t.
David….
I am always harsh when it comes to Republicans. 😉
But you are right. It was a time for a bipartisan compliment, and Ross failed.
Gov elect Markell will survive or perish depending on what he does the first year. The budget gap is huge ($ 500 million) and a scalpel won’t be enough.
Placating the Democrat interest groups will have to go on at the same time as getting business moving in Delaware despite a very nasty national scene.
Versus the Republican interest groups who will be looking for business subsidies and tax credits to their favorite people. Way to put your thinking cap on, Protack.
Does Tom Ross think the election is next month or something? He’s still in campaign mode it would seem. Doesn’t he realize he fielded a bunch of losers and now it’s time to move on? Geez, how childish he sounded in the paper.
Then, there’s Ron Williams. What, he thinks he broke the Rochford story? I don’t think so. Seems to me he must’ve gotten it from here since this is where it appeared first.
